    So essentially totalitarianism is authoritarianism on steroids?

    • @anthonytarczynski5423
      @anthonytarczynski5423 4 роки тому +24

      Eineus Not exactly. Totalitarianism is ultra-authoritarianism (the strictest obedience and submission to all authority at the expense of political freedoms, individual liberties, and personal rights), pure despotism (all political power and authority is concentrated into one person), and an extreme police state. You can have an authoritarian democracy, the Soviet Union, Maoist China, and the eastern bloc were perfect examples of such.

      @@santiagobustamante2082 actually, authoritarian states can have multiple political parties that are in government but are suppressed, Hungary for example, even though it is not completely authoritarian, it has a really flawed state thats edging on a hybrid regime, which is a state either converting from authoritarian to democracy or a democracy converting to authoritarianism, its quicker to become an authoritarian state ofc but enough with the terms. Hungary's multiparty state has mostly been dominated but its Right-wing populist and Far-Right coalition Fidesz-KDNP. One way they practice authoritarianism is by using the threshold system in elections, a single party alone must have 5% of the votes, while a coalition of two parties will need 10%, and a coalition of three or more requires 15%. Not only that, parties in coalitions that already had seats prior to the election would not lose those seats or become parliamentary if they failed to meet the 10% or 15% threshold, which is somewhat like a way to make it seem like Hungary is having a completely democratic election, but it could be used to the ruling parties(Fidesz-KDNP) advantage if they lose power as they would lose seats(because popular vote is what decides the outcome in mult-party systems) but would not lose them all if they dropped below the 10% bilateral coalition threshold.

      @MometrixAcademy But, when the authoritarian takes on the strawman fallacy, thus ruling in tyranny, this needs a new stronger word, spelled differently.
      Totalitarian sufferes from the strawman fallacy. Now, the narcissist is a victim, and they are self justified to rule in tyranny. While the author is the root word in authoritarian. My local building department is the authority having jurisdiction. I don't mind getting violations to correct the problems by the authoritarians. Author, authoritarian, and the people having authoritarian jurisdictions (to give me a speeding ticket) is all the same word.
      But, when the authoritarian takes on the strawman fallacy, thus ruling in tyranny, this needs a new stronger word, spelled differently.
      For example, Walt Disney testified to congress unions were communist. By doing the strawman fallacy, he threw the first stone.

    a good example of authoritarianism is the russian empire in world war one where the king had all political power but didn't control any aspects of russian culture, behavior, beliefs or economics.
    compared to nazi germany where hitler controlled the political power and the lives of his citizens unlike the tsar

      Good point. The Tsar had little power but legally was the absolute authority on everything. In theory he controlled all of Russia. But he didn't.
      Another example is Fascism in Italy is authoritarianism, vs Nazi totalitarianism.
      Or communist Romania 🇷🇴 was authoritarian simply because Ceaucescus attempts at totalitarianism faltered. It may have been totalitarianism for a short time.
      The country Ceaucescu had sought to imitate, North Korea 🇰🇵 had implemented totalitarianism.
      The authoritarian Romanian regime was attempting to copy totalitarianism. But it crumbled quickly because the people were not compliant with the system the authorities were trying to put in place.

      @James East I wish I could give this response an award for the realistic nature of how the US government really is and how we don't actually live in a democracy just the false connotation of one.

    • @Based_Blue96
      @Based_Blue96 3 роки тому +1

      @James East Well, the problem here, is that everyone deciding on a law is inefficient, it would work if the US had a smaller population and in fact, it is present on localized levels in small towns especially. Though once you get to county level or state level, direct democracy doesn't work. States like Sweden, according to the Democracy Index on wiki, are considered full democracies, having a representative parliamentary system.

    The best governance system could be a mixture of all "isms". I believed my country the Philippines is a democratic and republican government with a touch of individualism, authoritarianism and socialism but not totalitarianism and communism. The Philippine Constitution says: The Philippines is a democratic and a republican state. Sovereignty resides in the people and all government authority emanates from them. Through popular election the president and other national and local elective positions are elected. the individual has sovereignty of itself and guaranteed by the Bill of Rights of the Philippine constitution. The individual person(natural or juridical) can do anything for itself and benefit provided it will not impair the rights of others to which if happened the other person can have its redress of grievances through the court. The government through the President can call the armed forces or declare martial law and suspend the writ of habeas corpus in case of invasion, rebellion, and lawlessness and violence. This is already authoritarianism . The late Philippine President Marcos declared martial Law on 1972 throughout the country because there was anarchy then. The state is under threat by Communist party of the Philippines and its armed group, the New People's Army; and in the southern part of the country it was threatened by the armed secessionist movement of the Moro national Liberation Front. The state must defend itself from these actual threat. The state introduces agrarian reform to give the tenants(serf) their land they are tilling owned by the landlords and other wealthy families owning big tracks of lands while others have no land to till at all. Socialism practice like Medical and health care, free education, housing and other benefits for the people were undertaken. the best practice of governance is democratic as it allows other "isms" to practice when they are beneficial.

    This video is a good summary of the distinction between totalitarianism and authoritarianism, but for the claim that Nazi Germany was totalitarian. It wanted to be, but lacked the opportunity. The regime's military objectives came first. Germany had to acquire lebensraum (living space) in the East, before it could set about crushing all dissent and perfecting the Germanic race. That meant that open dissent by the churches and hidden dissent from the military could not be dealt with until after the war was won. Fortunately, Germany lost the war.
    Stalin's USSR and Mao's China are good historical examples of a totalitarian regimes, as is today's increasingly repressive China. In the late 1930s, Stalin could and did execute any military leader he distrusted. Mao killed millions for not being enthusiastic followers of his communist dogmas. China is moving against Hong Kong because it cannot allow a successful democracy to exist on its doorstep.

    Authoritarian = alows individual initiative and values the individual, but not at the price undermining the group or Authority (whether a King, Oligarchs, Senators, ect).
    Totalitarian = no individual initiative or value beyond those that wield the power of the state
    Every government can become Totalitarian, especially democracy in a time of crisis.
    What prevents totalitarianism is good strong men and honorable women that value their people and their ability to become stronger/more powerful on an individual level.

    The Weimar Republic's Reichstag was authoritarian, yet all its members were elected. This is democratic despite being authoritarian. If this isn't democratic, then neither is the election of the US President today, where the College elects the President not the people. (The people are not the electorate during the election of the President. The Electoral College is, however.)
    The Reichsrat, however, was an advisory council to the President and was appointed by state representatives to discuss matters of state, and other national and diplomatic issues, this is meritocratic. Therefore was not elected by the common people, much like the US President isn't today.
