I once read a book where Joe Cornish wrote this: "My intention is to make pictures that really express something over and beyond the literal. That aspiration, to find some meaning from what might otherwise be mundane... something transcendent, is a form of inspiration in itself." This quote have been inspiring me ever since.
Excellent! Finally some very serious discussion about climate change. I have been directly supporting a local astrophysicist in climate science outreach over the past 10 years and am fully sold on human-caused atmospheric change, aside from our huge negative impact on our planet. I no longer fly and will never go on a cruise ship again. In general, society does not take our changing climate seriously or personally. Thank you for this video.
Hi Walter. I'm currently on a bit of a mission to learn as much as I can about climate change, it's impacts and potential solutions. I'll be sharing more thoughts throughout the year although I am 100% certain that shaming individuals is NOT the way forward.... eg Roger Federer in the last few days.
Joe stated that he hopes his and other's photography creates interest in the areas being photographed. But isn't the end result that as these "photo destinations" become more and more popular the increase in air travel, automobile emissions and the overall damage to the environment negates any positive effect your photos have on mother earth.
Great Video Adam, Joe was an early inspiration for me with his book "First Light" and was the reason that I discovered the delights that Tuscany has to offer the landscape photographer.
Joe Cornish is a fabulous landscape photographer - one of the very best. The images of his that you included are evidence of that, but he has been doing it for 30 years! He is also great to listen to. But I have challenged him indirectly a couple of times on his environmental and carbon footprint and he does get very touchy about it. It made me feel a little bit queasy as I listened to him in this video.
What a gentleman Joe Cornish is, not to mention an inspiration for landscape photographers, heartfelt and sincere. Excellent watch, love your honest approach to Vlogging BTW, thanks.
He comes across as such a lovely person. I have met him briefly a few times and as you say he is so humble. If I had to pick one person as an inspiration in photography JC would be that person.
Visited there last year for the first time - this encouraged me to look back at the pics I took and re edit a couple. Always like watching you at places I recognise.
I have met Joe myself - he is such an amazingly talented photographer and such a nice man. He said to me that he couldn't see what "all the fuss was about" about this photography. I said you just inspire people. Been a real inspiration to me for sure and clearly to Adam too!!!
The last shot is one of my absolute favourites of yours. Great that you’re willing to share your own progression, experiences & enthusiasm. You’re also extremely humble with it. All the very best for 2020.
A great video Adam, thanks for sharing your experience, really enjoyed your interview and the images. Your pleasure at meeting and talking to one of your and my hero's is a joy. Thanks once again.
Excellent start to 2020: one of the best landscape photographers out there, and is always generous with his time and advice. His processing videos on the OnLandscape website are really worth watching. Thanks, now off to check the podcast
In 2005 I returned to photography by visiting Northumberland when Joe was working more with Light and Land. I had a flimsy tripod and forgot all I had previously learned about graduated neutral density filters - true to form Joe kindly allowed me to borrow both a decent tripod and a set of grads. I have continued with photography in the digital age and can honestly say that one of the reasons I have got so much pleasure from making images in the landscape has been Joe's initial inspiration. Always great to listen to what he has to say and I would urge anyone interested in the genre to visit his gallery in Northallerton to see some of the prints for real. So, I would like to say thank you to Joe and indeed to yourself for making this - top marks.
Happy New Year Adam! Fantastic video. Thank you so much for bringing these interviews with Joe Cornish and also Charlie Waite a few months ago. Both are inspirational, as are you. I hope your back is better now.
I know I have met Joe once at his super gallery in Northallerton, North Yorkshire and what a great person he is. There is alway different way of see and understanding and each time I here some one like Joe it so nice to hear his passion for what he dose. Thank you for a great video and have an amazing 2020.
Just wanted to say a huge thank you to you both for spending the time to produce these types of content for the likes of us to enjoy. Without your drive and effort we would never really get the opportunity to gain from and enjoy your time and thoughts. Just brilliant. I’m pleased you had a great time too. All the very best for 2020 and a heartfelt thank you for your hard work. ‘The point is to touch the heart’ ..... job done
What a great start to 2020 and a wonderful insight into Joe’s thought process. It’s easy to understand why he is so good at what he does. Also, well done for asking the right questions, he was clearly very comfortable talking to you so thank you.
You too are humble like Joe. Your photography is as fabulous as Joe's, and you're a wonderful, prolific landscape photography instructor. The final image you ended the vid with was mesmerizingly gooooorgeous.
Fantastic! First Charlie Waite, now Joe Cornish. Evidence that great talent and being a really good person can go together ( as it does with you). Well done.
Another great video Adam. What an experience to spend the day with an absolute legend in photography, Joe Cornish. He comes across as such a lovely man & so willing to share his knowledge. Thanks again Adam & I look forward to more of your video's in 2020.
You put out such great vlogs Adam. This one is right up there with the best I have seen of yours. What a great man JC is and congratulations on your skillful conversational style which revealed so much inspirational thinking and many breathtaking images from JC.
Very informative video from a master I find it interesting that most pros will only need to dodge and burn and sharpen and soften certain areas I am going to try that instead of modifying the entire image.
Thanks Malcolm. I remember and think we discussed his work last time we spoke. Also it was probably well over 20 years ago now, so my memory may be failing me, but I think it was you who made me aware of Joe in the first place.
I have followed Joes work since the mid 1990s . We have one of his calendars every year , and own several of his books :D Thanks for sharing this video Adam :D Teddy
Adam, I was engrossed in your video. Some time ago a Nun from Stanbrook Abbey, Wass, Yorkshire, mentioned Joe Cornish’s name to me. She, Agnes Wilkins, is keen on photography herself, & her brother, Bernard, is a photographer in Scarborough. I’ve just sent this video to her. She will be so pleased.
With all that’s available on photography this was so great to hear such a professional as to what inspires him! , his thoughts, and his place in this art. Thanks for your effort!
Absolutely fantastic interview being in the landscape gets into our lifeblood it is so important that we recognise CC . Well done Adam and Joe superb video and message.
A privilege indeed Adam. Nice guy and great photographer. Went to a talk of his several years ago and it has left a lasting impression. Happy new year to you - hope it is another successful one for you.
Truly a refreshing video Adam. Inspirational, educational, and just a sheer pleasure to see you with one of the best Landscape Photographers to ever walk the Earth. I thoroughly enjoyed seeing him on your channel and hope to see more of him as well as other icons of Landscape Photography with you. Well done man and do keep up the amazing work. 👍
Great vid, I noticed Joe dangling a bag off his tripod to aid stability, this is something I never do as it seems so wrong. To me ( and I know I must be wrong ) the wind blowing introduces shake into the tripod. I just can't get past that idea. Joe's landscape bag looks like my wildlife kit, inc my 500/4 😀
It's a compromise. A large, light kit bag probably would do more harm than good in a strong wind. A low surface area bag with a few kilos of rocks in it might work wonders in the same conditions.
I have to confess, I didn't know Joe Cornish (unfortunately). This is a great video with good thoughts and great pictures from Joe! Thank you for sharing with us. Greetings from Switzerland.
Great way to start 2020 Adam. Joe is so humble and such a talented photographer. What a great interview. Totally agree with the whole shooting local idea. Your shot at the end was beautiful.
I think listening to Joe is good for the soul. A thoroughly lovely human. I'm not sure on the B2 boots purchase decision for a wander on the moors haha. I think a certain amount of fitness might be required before you're at a point where they are going to be more of a help than hindrance. I have a pair of Scarpa Ribelle lites which are superb for scrambling and winter mountaineering but not sure I'd choose to wear them unless necessary.
Yep....definitely overkill although they were good for clambering around on those rocks. I've got some winter mountaineering planned so just wearing them in. Not confident there's gonna be much snow this year though.
First Man Photography I was lucky and managed to get a fair bit in Snowdonia just before Christmas but I’m not hopeful we’ll see much more. Maybe for the best as I had a major squeaky bum moment on bwelch Tryfan scramble in the ice. If you’re looking for crampons to use with your boots I’d recommend Climbing Technology Nuptse C2, they can be had fairly reasonably if you keep and eye out on amazon. Also for when full crampons are too much Grivel RAN micro spikes have been great and super lightweight to just throw in your bag.
I was incredibly lucky to meet Joe some thirty years ago, when I worked as a callow 18 year old alongside his girlfriend Jenny in a ski chalet for a season. I was vaguely interested in photography back then but didn't even know what to ask. It's curious that I've become increasingly passionate about landscape photography in my hobby. Nowadays, I'd be humbled to spend even a few minutes chatting and learning from him.
They Caged Non don’t hate yourself think of it as a treat still to come 😀. My family like it too. Visited Durham four years ago on a uni tour with my daughter. Lovely place, about a four and a half hour drive for me.
What a fantastic video and conversation. Joe is an absolute legend. If you cannot buy his books, I'd recommend to visit his website and view his beautiful work.
Brilliant Adam, Joe is a legend great insights as always and he teaches so much without trying. I've been lucky enough to share the odd coffee with Joe or a drive at events and in those small times he's shared advice thats shaped my photography and helped with my career. Quality video, great start to 2020!
Great vid! Shooting locally and keeping the carbon foot print down. Some of the phots of his were very inspiring and I think I could get similarish results down Blackhall beach.
Wow. I really enjoyed that, and the most amazing photos I’ve ever seen. Just breathtakingly stunning. I would love to see a Phase One camera in action, and what an inspirational guy.
I could listen to Joe for hours, he has such a way of expressing his thoughts. His OnLandscape presentations are really worth watching.
Always a delight to hear Joe Cornish speaking anything about photography. Also, that head on his tripod is a monster.
I once read a book where Joe Cornish wrote this: "My intention is to make pictures that really express something over and beyond the literal.

Tremendous interview and will look forward to listening to the Podcast.
Great Video Adam, Joe was an early inspiration for me with his book "First Light" and was the reason that I discovered the delights that Tuscany has to offer the landscape photographer.
Thx for this great video. I appreciate Joe Cornishs opinion. Very authentic.
I Love all your videos Adam thank you for creating amazing content...
One of Joes books was what got me to drop a paintbrush and pickup a camera... i never forget the colour in Joes images.
An absolute legend of landscape photography. Inspiring.
What a fantastic insight into Joe's philosophy and mindset when it comes to photography. And stunning pictures from you both.
His pictures of the rocks. WOW. You are very good Adam. Joe is stratosphere. I went into his shop and was blown away with all the pictures.
I often reflect on a few days on a course with Joe Cornish at Mellon Charles in 2013, and how inspiring and influential they were for me.
Thanks for sharing your conversation with Joe Cornish. He is such an eloquent artist and his eloquence is reflected in his body of work. Delightful!
Great video. Im chuffed to bits you met your photographic hero. He seems like such a humble and genuine fella with a stunning portfolio to boot.
Hey, what a fantastic video. Keep up the great work! I look forward to your next video.
What a gentleman Joe Cornish is, not to mention an inspiration for landscape photographers, heartfelt and sincere. Excellent watch, love your honest approach to Vlogging BTW, thanks.
What a brilliant informative man ..what a talent...... I must try harder...... thanks for this vid ...... regards fred
You get great guests, which is a testament to you and your photography. Speaking of photography, your last image is aces!
Thanks Derek. Very kind.
He comes across as such a lovely person. I have met him briefly a few times and as you say he is so humble. If I had to pick one person as an inspiration in photography JC would be that person.
