OMG.....You are STUPIFYINGLY Talented .......the best tutorial ever...this has changed my approach to pastel work completely ...keep up your gifted work !!!!!! and Thank you SO !!!!!!
Your level of up-close detail is so helpful. Thank you for taking the time to demonstrate and describe those details. Seeing the many layers to accomplish realistic skin color is a rare treat.
Thank you and great idea! This is one of my earliest videos so quality is not the best. Check out my other people portraits in my playlist at ua-cam.com/play/PLbkshqfGlew9KIgBQPEliIhzpjeR5Wh_P.html
I like the way you detail the eyes because some artists just plant some color with the end of their finger and that is basically it. I know it takes longer but our eyes mean so much and I am not trying to put other artists down but the detail endears me more to a closer likeness. Well done.🤗
You have the best tutorials on pastel. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and talent to the world. Your tutorials have helped me immensely as I learn to use pastel for my art. Can you please make a tutorial on drawing hair with pastel? Thank you.
It's like being back stage with a brilliant magician and learning all her secrets. Very grateful for your willingness to share. It looks as though, and as is the case with all art forms, a magnificent result is all a matter of control. And a masterful eye, of course.
Thank you Christopher! That is high praise and I'm glad you enjoy the videos. It is having had a lot of practise and working with the best quality materials. I'm always happy to share the techniques to help others progress.
You’ve inspired me to try the sheet of velour I had and wow I love it! a learning curve for sure but really enjoyed it. I found softer pastel pencils work fine too :)
I love the art work at the start of this video Emma, if I am not mistaken that is David and Goliath in the background, our Belfast David and Goliath that is from Harland And Wolff. I love it so much because my Grannie and Granda lived in Newtownbreada Belfast and when I would stay over, in my bedroom that was pretty much the view from the window and at night I loved it. Brings back so many wonderful memories and I guess that is why we love art so much, it has that power to evoke such emotions. Amazing tutorial Emma and love your work.
Thank you for the lovely comments! I too lived in Newtownbreda so we both experienced the exact same view I bet. My old studio overlooked this view and was a source of inspiration for a few paintings! If you check out my website the piece is called 'Going Home' as each day the crows flew out towards the harbour in the morning and back past our window at sundown. Art can indeed evoke emotion, especially when the place means a lot to you.
Emma Colbert Art wow that is incredible what a small world, an awesome artist who’s work I adore loved in the same area as my grandparents, they actually lived in 54 Breada Drive, almost at the top of the hill and their house was right on the corner , unfortunately they are no longer with us so they won’t mind me putting out their address... I hope lol. I’ll check out your site again cause I never know what I want for Christmas or birthday as I’m happy with what I have, but I think I will have to drop plenty of hints to my wife for a print or something of your beautiful painting. Of course all your paintings are beautiful but that one just really pulls at my heart strings.
That's the fun of pastel, being a little looser and applying blocks of colour in one go. Great thing is if you use a proper pastel paper where you can add more layers, you don't have to fear making mistakes. You can work over the top usually a bit like oil painting. Dark to light...good luck!
Just come across your tutorials.... wow love them. Appreciate how you talk us through much of what you are doing. Have subscribed. Many thanks. Mags, Glasgow, Scotland.
Thank you Margaret! Trying to improve my video quality and have just started a Patreon channel for proper hour long tutorials showing more real time footage. You can see more about this at www.patreon.com/EmmaColbertArt. Thanks for subscribing here :-)

Emma, I am learning so much from your demonstrations. Thank you for being so generous passing your wisdom to us.
So helpful! I did a split screen on my iPad Pro, watching you tube on the left side and taking notes on the right! Betsy Conway

You're amazing!!! I'm thinking about getting into pastels. Just new to color. Its nerve racking. Not like pencil where you can just remove it

Hello, very nice.. what kind of paper do you use?
Hi, this is Hahnemühle velour paper. I also use Pastelmat which you can see in some of my newer videos :-)
Porque utilizar un trozo de pastel sobre el iris si en realidad tienes un lápiz para pintarlo? Min. 4,2
