Because civic theatres can never find enough men or boys the right age. Boys are taught that theatre and singing are for girls. Football and other sportsball are the only activities suitable for boys. :::eye roll::: I teach theatre. Nothing could be further from the truth!
It makes me so sad that no other theatres used the version with Lise and her songs!! Peters gender doesn’t even matter because he’s like a sibling to them, not a father figure. At least in the musical, he’s lises husband/fiancé before she dies. So Petra could just be her gf or bestie or something, but definitely more sibling than father lol
The girl is so rude her mom couldn’t get any good shoes (Ik it’s her character but still) and when WWll was happening it was so hard to find good things
@@dlwlrminn Yes, you are right. However, in my opinion, Peter had a specific personality and specific qualities that didn't match Petra's. In the book, he was masculine and almost like a second father to the girls. No hate! I'm sure they put plenty of work into this play and I regret saying it was ruined because it wasn't.

Not the real one is peter a boy not Petra a girl
Why did they make Peter a girl? It just ruins it!
megsoneal I think it’s ok.
Any if anything it is hard to get EVERYTHING PERFECT.

They cast a boy to play Peter but he quit so they changed it to petra
