There is nothing scarier than looking down and seeing a seal swimming 6 feet below you, then when you turn to the side to breathe there's a head the size of a fucking Labrador staring at you.
It's worth remembering that the actual number of triathletes that get involved in bike accidents while training and racing is much much larger than the number of triathletes attacked by sharks.
Unfortunately, I’m afraid of things outside of my control : sharks and other wildlife in the water. I heard swimming with lots of people in the Ayer during a race tends to scare animals away, but I’m still quite anxious :/.
I used to not like deep water, but I went out using my wetsuit, and I had friends in kayaks near by. After a while, I didn't even think about the depth of water. Now I don't mind it :)
Remember, more people are injured using vending machines tipping or cows than sharks. If you want to be scared of something, be scared of a vending machines and cows, not sharks.
things about open water swimming that scare me...Sharks, the Kraken, jelly fish, under water zombies... blow fish, tiger fish, sting rays, eels, barracudas, sharks (yes there here twice), radio active fish, that fish that swims up the nether regions and lays egs, electric eels, tsunamis.... yyyyeaaah probably not the most rational listoh yeah and piranhas and crocodiles
Im planning on doing a triathlon in about 2 months time, I’m not scared of water but I’m a little nervous about the amount of people in the water My solution is to stay in the back if its a pack start or happy days if its individual starts
What is your worst fear when it comes to open water swimming?
Getting too tired in the middle of nowhere and eventually drowning
Definitely the (non-existent) sharks
Waves
Chaffing wetsuit
Jaws & piranha's....

Open water training in north:
1.) Get chainsaw
2.) Make path large enough
3.) Go swim
I'm swimming in an open water event for the first time in a few weeks and I'm anxious, but your video helps me prepare! Thanks.
Good luck!
if my fear is fish near me in the water, do i release a live tuna into my local pool ?
Kumar, maybe try a toy one? Or visualisation might help.
Yes. Release a live tuna and you will be problem free
Just try to sneak into the local aquarium after hours and jump in lol

How can I improve to swim straight? I just participate in a 70.3 and swam 2.4 km instead of the 1.9. Please advise
Thank You Very Much

Great advice Heather!

this is the best comment ever thnx , im no longer fearing the muddy water
There are no vending machines and cows in the open sea, there are sharks though.
Statistics are just that, statistics. When you're in the water, the thought that more people are killed by cows or bees doesn't help.
Not being able to see the bottom.
Not having that wall every 25m. I really need to do more of those turn without touching the wall. Thanks for the reminder!
I'm the opposite. I HATE having to turn. I swim much more efficiently in open water. There's nothing to interrupt my rhythm.

How did it go?
don't be at the back of the pack...sharks eat the weakest swimmers
My biggest fear is swimming in the back of the pack.
Where I swim very real concers are sharks, alligators, jellyfish, crocodiles and random pop up thunderstorms. South Florida is fun.
ayyy same. and there’s like no where to train as well
Or maybe a fucking shark!! How do u fix that??
Buy a wetsuit that looks like a vegetable :)
Sharks??
For my next swim, I think I'll add a shark fin to my wetsuit...
