Justin Trudeau on Indigenous Issues in Canada: The VICE News Interview

  • Dozens of isolated indigenous communities in Canada have recently declared states of emergency due to suicide epidemics, unclean water, and a lack of adequate infrastructure.
    Amid these crises, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau made a historic visit last week to Shoal Lake 40, an isolated First Nations reserve that has been without clean water for two decades. It is extremely rare for sitting prime ministers to visit reserves, and the trip, organized with the local chief and council of Shoal Lake 40 in coordination with VICE and the office of the prime minister, will be part of an upcoming VICELAND documentary on the issues plaguing indigenous communities.
    Trudeau spent several hours with the residents of Shoal Lake 40 before speaking to VICE News about the government’s complex relationship with First Nations, and what his new Liberal government says it will do to help solve the many problems the communities face.

    Don't treat them as "indigenous" people. They are citizens of Canada. You don't have to pity them and treat them like tiny people who need to be taken care of by self-entitled people. Instead, give them their rights, which every Canadian citizen deserves. Give them respect and encourage them to stand on their own feet. Instead of treating them as "minorities" who need special rights, provide them with the basic infrastructure that every Canadian deserves.

      Exactly, we have the ability to control our safety world which is in every job but they will not allow us to certify our own safety programs and courses as that is their money. We even put more of our WCB premiums money into ENFORM, ACSA, OSA but they will not allow us to have our own provider like an Aborigional Safety Association. Not a snowball's chance in hell will we be allowed to touch their money.

      I agree in principle, but many of them do not WISH to be treated this way. They consider it as giving in to 'assimilation'. What I find curious is the frequency of European admixture running in the veins of our indigenous fellow-citizens. Not all are in denial, either. But cultural separatism and ethnic identitarianism are very fashionable nowadays, and I see a sort of indigenous neofascism as an offshoot.
      I am not worried about the drive for local self-government in far-flung indigenous lands. In principle at least, it makes sense. But from the point of view of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, Who died for the sins of ALL humanity, I am obliged to oppose racism on EVERY level, indigenous racism as well as 'white supremacy.'

    idk this guy. I'm an American. I'm not a republican or democrat. This is my take: It's great that he's concerned, absolutely great. The entire time I was thinking "damn. the pres. of the U.S. would never do this." The problem is, he's throwing a lot of money around. The liberal is very strong in this one. "investments, projects, infrastructure, funding, etc." should have asked him what he's cutting to pay for all that, or how much he's increasing taxes, or how much he's inflating the economy and further devaluing the Canadian dollar. Does Canada have the reserves to throw money around like this? I like that he sounds like he's not going to make it a social welfare project. It sounds like he's going to use funding to encourage independent growth. Good on him and the honest Canadians like him. It's weird seeing a politician that isn't a snake, being American and all. The only question is this: where dafuq he getting all this money?

    I am Metis. I have family living on Reservations. The problem is our government segregates Indigenous people from the rest of the population. Why in this century do we have reservations? They are concentration camps for native people.
    Band councils are people too and many are corrupt and do not share the money that is allotted to the people fairly.
    Each person should be treated as an individual with all rights and freedoms as a Canadian. Not labeled, not segregated.
    Also, I understand each indigenous person is considered a ward of the state. Yet a child in foster care, that is also considered a ward of the state in Canada, is released from any financial supports at the age of 18. Yet.... the Canadian tax payer must pay for an indigenous person, all their natural life.* Why should people have to financially support a race of people who are just as capable to work and earn a wage, as anyone else that was born here.
    You give a person a fish they eat for a day, Teach a person to fish they eat everyday.
    (* contingent on particulars.)
    People generally are not racist in Canada. Most are extremely empathetic towards the plight of indigenous people and their communities. There is, however, a great deal of resentment. Billions of tax payer dollars go to support one race. (As discussed in many a coffee shop) It is no longer equality with-in a net work multiculturalism but a guilt trip from our government guilting tax payers to feel sorry for indigenous people. They don't need money, they don't need sympathy. They need to be Canadian.

    we can send all the $ in the world to the first nations but after spending all of it, things will be back to the way they were before. it's a politically incorrect thing to mention, but it needs to be mentioned. lot of Canadians feel the same way but they remain quiet b/c of political correctness & the liberals' monopoly on the Canadian media. truth is first nations have deep seated problems. the catholic church & its residential schools probably played a major role in causing those problems. harshness of residential schools produced lots of psychological scars passing down traumas to present day. there's so many messed up Aboriginal families that are undereducated & miserable. we can give them more $ but it's not going to solve anything. i don't know how the Aboriginals can be productive members of Canadian society but giving them $ isn't the solution. lot of Canadians are in quiet agreement that Aboriginals are a burden to Canada, but they're keeping it quiet b/c of political correctness.

    So, Mr. Trudeau is saying that, indigenous people, as nations, can expect more of the same. They will be subsumed under the Canadian government approval process with development, developers and the desires of capital for profit driving and ultimately running the show. Surely, Mr. Trudeau can understand the simple concept that authentic consent and control over indigenous lands by indigenous peoples (all lands not taken up for settlement and immigration as treated by and with the Crown and subsequently, through colonization were stolen and deemed to be "Crown" lands),
    means having a veto, being able to say no BEFORE any Government or corporate processes are initiated. But, it's not really a veto. Canadians must recognize (communicating this with colonialized language and concepts) that indigenous people are sovereign over their traditional lands, lands that were not ceded to the Crown and most of which were never the subject of treaties, that Canadians and corporations have been stealing from First Nations since colonialization began. There has been little "sharing" of resources. As "sovereign" nations, the Government of Canada and the state's sanctioned corporations, must negotiate directly with First Nations in a nation-to-nation relationship where one nation can say no to the other. Any desire by Canadians and corporations to use these lands or extract resources requires consent first, not mere "consultation" with indigenous people as just another "stakeholder" in the process who would be "accommodated" through "compensation." No means no and must be respected.
    Given the rapid deterioration of the web-of-life, embracing, rather than resisting such a relationship is in the best interests of all.

    2019. Justin Trudeau only buys organic. Meanwhile a lot of Canadians do not. Why? APPLES ARE $1 EACH (example). It's fine if you can afford it, but that doesn't mean you should. The moral of the story here is, Justin wasn't my favourite Prime Minister. I send my condolences to the families of the missing Indigenous women.

      +Subscriptions He's a fraud. You must not be very old if you think this guy is genuine. He's filling you full of shit for his own gain. I bet that a whole industry pops up around this funding. They will provide little or no usable services and pocket the rest. Why? That's because everybody knows that these people are too pathetic but by doing this they make fools think they are actually going to accomplish something so you can stop worrying about them. They live this way because that's all they're capable of.

    8 billion is to be spent on indigenous communities. There are around 30 million Canadians. So that comes out to roughly $267 per Canadian per year to help a small percent of the population. Also, 1/3 of Canadians don't pay income tax so we got $400 per Canadian taxpayer per year.

    As an American I have no idea what's going on, and why/how is your PM doing such a shit job? (That seems to be the overall opinion of him through the comments.)

    • @JoesGLI
      @JoesGLI 8 років тому

      ***** Thank's for responding, I appreciate it. As you might know any major American media outlet is pretty self absorbed. So thankful the net offers news sites like Al Jazeera and others for a global unbiased view. The whole world seems to be in constant conflict now. It's just sad.
      Focusing on Trudeau was it something specific in his policy making that made him unpopular, or lack thereof? Or is it more of just not the right man for the job kind of deal? I will most likely read up on him anyways, but I think it's always better to get the opinion of the people who have had to endure while he is in office.
      I truly fear for my country. So many desperate people who think our country is in some bad way right now when overall we are better off than 95% of the world. More of our lovely medias doing. I mean 15 years ago if you would have told me, one of these two people will be our next POTUS. Hillary Clinton, and Donald Trump I would have laughed my ass off. I HATE both of them, yet while sure there are third parties and I'm registered Libertarian. But what's the point in voting for someone who is going to get maybe 3% of the popular vote. This is America's fault for not addressing the problem of a dominant two party system and now we are going to pay the price. We either have doormat Hillary Clinton. Even though I was just a 14 year old rebel who knew it all. I never understood why she didn't leave her husband after Bill's whole, I bang random unattractive woman in the oval office and lie about it fiasco. That always stuck with me for some reason. That should be telling to a lot of American's, but hell Bill is seen as a damn hero now. Then we have Donald Douchebag Trump. A man who is not a politician. Who is a gigantic bigot and honestly thinks we can build some giant wall to keep out illegal immigrants, are you high?! This isn't ancient China you fucking looney (see what I did there). But the #1 reason why Trump shouldn't have even been considered a candidate is because of private interest. I find it impossible to believe a businessman worth 4 Billion dollars will not use the power of that office to not only increase his wealth but institue sweeping privatization across the board. There is another country who has a leader who was a billionaire businessman before he was elected to office. Fucking Putin, do you want Putin, because this is how you get Putin! /> rant
      Also real quick just wanted to say I love the Great White North eh. "Take off or I'm gonna do the Steamroller".

    Are the Indigenous people incapable of creating more after school programs themselves? If they are in need of more counsellors, why aren't there more Indigenous people becoming counsellors to help support their local communities? What am I missing?

    • @bpoochay5600
      @bpoochay5600 2 роки тому

      What you are missing is that federal government is not helping as much as they suppose too, federal government is trustee to native money and Canada government spends so much of it and does want to pay it back, so that leaves native people with so much money to handle for each native community
