  • If you are totally new to engraving this could be the video for you. I am a novice myself and found that most videos on engraving tend to show WHAT can be done with very few details on HOW to make things happen. My goal is to take some of the mystery out of the process by exploring an inexpensive system coupled with free software. I am not trying to make you an expert on engraving, but hopefully this video can help average people realize it is not nearly as complicated as they have imagined.

    Thank you! I found this very helpful and fun to watch. I'm very new (first tries just yesterday) and have been trying to figure out why everything is coming out so dark. And while trying to pick up the very basics I've darn near fallen asleep watching super detailed, in depth software tutorials that never seem to address my specific questions or concerns so... Again, thank you for keeping it simple so that us newbies can get up and running without too much trouble.

      The laser WILL burn you - perhaps you were not at the focal point or something. Do NOT put your fingers in the beam - if this burns wood it will burn your flesh.

    Whats the max height you can put the head. I want to engrave musket stocks, but i dont want to spend thousands on a fiber laser

    • @john30340
      @john30340  2 роки тому

      The head itself does not really have much of an adjustment and getting the stock under the rails would be a problem I think - but, it should be easy to mount the entire unit on "stilts" to raise it a few inches so the musket lays below the entire unit. Probably would have do something like this with most brands. Would be easy with this because there is not an enclosure. You would probably want adjustable stilts (or mounting bracket) to keep the stock you are using close to the normal position of work surface but that does not really seem like a big problem. If you try something like this with any brand let us know - seems like a lot of people might want to engrave on large items.

    • @john30340

      I would think that Win7 would work with some hardware and software, and not with others. Just read the specs for the options you are considering.... most companies spell out compatibility issues very clearly.

    Good to see you back on UA-cam John!
    This is helpful, I've seen those little laser engravers and thought they are a cool mix of technology.
    Did it create a lot of smoke (is this a garage device)?
    I'm interested in seeing some of the things you create!

    • @john30340
      @john30340  2 роки тому

      No real problem with smoke when engraving. If you start cutting wood with one of the more powerful lasers you can get a little smoke - enough to smell a little for sure. I would not want to do a lot of cutting in my office.

    What changes did you make from the first wood to the final wood that made the primary difference? The last wood in the photo looks much better. It would be helpful to know more about how you fine tuned it to get that result. Thanks!

    • @john30340
      @john30340  2 роки тому +1

      The actual changes would depend on the type of wood you are using. That is the whole point of the video - YOU must try changing the speed of movement and the intensity of the laser on the the particular item you are engraving. With only a little experience, I think you will find yourself able to get the results you want on most surfaces with one or two trials. The point is that you should NOT expect to be able to look up the settings or ask someone what they used and get a PERFECT result. It will get you close, but then it is up to you to experiment until you get something that satisfies your needs. Hope this helps.

    • @sophrocide618
      @sophrocide618 2 роки тому

      @@john30340 yes I guess my question could have been phrased better. I was wondering more what settings you experimented with to get that result. Power, speed, or any other of those settings you mentioned previously like grayscale changes etc. which ones made the most difference in your example so I can test the same.

    • @john30340
      @john30340  2 роки тому +1

      The first wood image had the gray scale dither - the last one did not. On the pine I was using I preferred the non-dither, but if you were using a harder wood, or if you were engraving the picture of someone's face then the dither might be preferred. In many cases it is just preference. More importantly though, if you experiment with all the options on a three or four types of materials, I think you will get a feel for what works with various types of images etc. That should really be your goal - to be able to choose a reasonable starting point on your own. I know all this can be intimidating but once you spend a little time experimenting I think you will find it a lot easier. Good luck :)
