Germany being the second largest market for MotU is even more amazing when you consider that during the 80s that would have only meant West Germany.

West Germany controlled more than twice the territory that East Germany controlled, and at the time of reunification had nearly quadruple the population.

but you do have to add swiss and austria too, because it was and is basically the same market. Here in Switzerland we also bought these Audioplays and watched the german synchro. Every Product designed for Germany would be sold in Swiss and Austria too without any change to it.
As a German I always was a huge fan of the concept, the audio Episode Anti Eternia is the best episode of all of them - it was thrilling, scary and the most important part: the concept was believable.

What espacially liked about the Audio Casettes was the Voice of Peter Pasetti who spoke Skeletor. He had a deep and booming Voice with a little coldness in. I've found that very cool.

I didn't realize that Anti-Eternia he-man went back that far. The comic is pretty cool with all the different he-man in it.
That comic is a recent 6 part mini-series from DC Comics. He-Man and the Masters of the Multiverse came out in 2019 and got wrapped up in 2020. Unless you are talking about one of the German audio tapes, then my bad...
You should have sold it to the board as a "shadow" He-Man. It's such a cool idea and design.
Super hyped for the Europa cassettes video. We didn't have Filmation. But those cassettes were really an excellent alternative. Excellent (voice) actors like Peter Pasetti doing the voice of Skeletor. Someone really should do a translation. Btw, saying Anti-Eternia is African-Eternian is like saying Darth Vader is black because of the mask. And that only works as a joke in Chasing Amy.
Grew up with Peter Pasetti's Skeletor. He was a great voice actor. So I was really disappointed watching the Filmation series the first time.
I did like pretty much all the voice actors. Except for the Sorceress. She sounded like an old granny. I was already familiar with her action figure and filmation form where she looks like 30. So that was always breaking immersion for me.

I always thought of him as a sort of magic “Hell-shadow” evil twin. Super stoked for the upcoming vid(s) on the German audios. Thanks a million Scott. MOTU rules.
I kinda get where the exec's were coming from. Apply some red lips and white eyes, and it's easily turned into blackface he-man. Potential problems they wouldn't want to deal with since the comic didn't exist yet to make the look more mainstream.
There was a comic with an alternate timeline Vader who was redeemed, returning to the light side, and he showed up in solid white armor.
Also, there's a whole conversation to be had about racism and how it relates to the motivation in deciding that a character with jet black skin is the evil counterpart to a character coded as white (i.e. Caucasian, in the American sense), but it's very much *not* the oversimplified, reductionist view the Mattel executives took. Short version: we have built into our culture this idea that paler/whiter = cleaner and/or more pure, while darker/blacker = dirtier/less pure, and there are a lot of metaphors and figures of speech that reinforce the idea. Again, it's overly reductionist to then say that therefore Anti-Eternia He-Man is racist; he's a color that no human can be, and I'm not sure anyone can with any intellectual honesty can look at him and say that he's coded as a Black man, not with his bright white pupils, pale pink irises, and red sclera, and not with hair identical to He-Man's but in scarlet instead. He's something other entirely.

@@singletona082 No, only Rodimus. Shattered Glass tends to either be less interesting straight up serious stories, or hilarious inversions or gags, like Ravage constantly talking and posting on social media, or the Terrorcons being emobodiments of Cybertronian culture.

Anti-Eternia Orko sounds terrifying af! Can you imagine Orko not being childish and not goofing his spells up?
I'm about half way through reading the DC stuff.
Literally the first thing Anti-Orko says when showing up and being mistaken for regular Orko: "What would you be without me, He-Man? You can not even fly. You are a regular buffoon!" After cutting He-Man's shocked reaction short: "No buts, I don't want to hear anything more." Followed by the spell "Oh Orko, from the magician's land, lend me your helping hand. For you all in this place, may now open the jaws of hell!"

@@SylentEcho The audio plays were tame enough, but clearly inspired by the original sword and sorcery style, so they allowed themself a bit more edge here and there. Simpler times, but better days for sure.
...this is one of my favorite Classics figures of all time! I have him front in a custom Slime Pit diorama fighting He-man one on one while the entire Hordak Clan is cheering behind them! Its such an amazing figure for a repaint!
Anti-Man-at-Arms also appears in the Audio play and is described as completely black and it is alluded that everyone has an Anti-Eternian counterpart. Anti Orko also appears but is somewhat inconsistently described as looking exactly as the original Orko...

They were never translated into any other language, so you have to understand german I´m afraid. But IF you speak german; These audio tapes are absolutely awesome. Great voice actors, great effects, great stories.
Amazing that you know about the audiocassettes from Germany, that really blows my mind! I am german, and as a kid the Filmation show was always too goofy for me. What drew me to the line was the more serious tone of the stories told on these cassettes, and I am glad u show so much interest in it that you actually gonna get them translated for you, and you gonna make an episode about it. So looking forward to your opinion^^
Second that. The Filmation series was just annoying - for me as a German 80s boy. Guess, somehow that did not translate well between the culture. But I had a lot of the audio cassettes and they were just great. Could listen to them whole afternoons and imagine how Eternia would look like.
Honestly I love that Faker ended up on Anti-Eternia and ended up serving that dimension's Keldor and becoming a good guy for a bit because he's programmed to follow Skeletor without question. It's the funniest thing. And hey, we got Battle Armor Faker out of it, so that's another win in my book.
Also love that Grayskull is called Hellskull in that dimension. It's so unnecessarily "OW THE EDGE" yet it's played straight, it's just \*CHEF'S KISS*, I unironically love it.
Also also I hope they make in-universe context for Purple He-Man and Yellow He-Man, as well as many other colors, so they can get figures. Give me a full Rainbow He-Man while you're at it.

The issue people would have with Anti He-Man is that he uses the "black is evil" trope applied to skin color. Wizards of the Coast changed the Drow in D&D last year due to complaints, because they were black-skinned humanoids that were innately evil.
Same with the Salamanders in 40k. The moment the mainstream is a target, you end up with grifters who willingly ignore that storyline about red eyes and an inhuman skin color just so the can fill their half-assed reaction video.
@@doesntmatter5857 While some skin tone related stuff gets pretty silly, there are legitimate real world concerns with the whole "white is good, black is evil" association.
For a similar but less politically contentious situation, I'm reminded of when Thundercats did its obligatory "don't judge a book by its cover" episode. It was a good enough lesson for a kids show, but it bugged me because it only shined a spotlight on how Thundercats as a series promoted the exact opposite.
As a kid's show, Thundercats unsurprisingly throughout its run used the "good is attractive, evil is ugly" shorthand for character designs. Then you get one episode that denounced that very shorthand. Heck, the feeling that there was a need to make such an episode itself showed the creators acknowledged the shorthand (which was present throughout media) taught something (attractive==good, ugly==evil) that needed to be directly countered.
@@BainesMkII Very good point. Creators are, especially in the age of the internet, always walking a tightrope no matter what they try and it seems to get worse and worse. I myself have started approaching old media by leaning back, accepting it as a product of the time and at least admire that usually, there were good intentions with the storytelling. The critics who are hell bent on tearing into a product, wheter old or new, will do so no matter what.
Right off the bat, I'm NOT in any supporting or condoning these beliefs, but the whole "evil has jet-black skin" idea is an old European superstition that goes back centuries, if not millennia. Devils and demons were often portrayed with jet-black skin, folk dances and folk tales often included supernatural characters with skin the colour of coal. And the same stigma goes with "gingers don't have souls." Anti-Eternia He-Man is just those two old superstitions about evil rolled into one guy, for maximum impact.
Such a shame those old superstitions were the cause of so much real-world hatred and strife.
This video is basically a stealth episode of your deep dive into every Classics figure... You should TOTALLY add it to that lineup.
The complete run of these cassettes was literally the first thing I went for after getting a mighty 2 Mbit broadband connection back in the day. Good times...
My son collects the Eternia minis. He loves the anti Eternia repaints which makes me happy because having kids excited about the brand means it will live on!

Love the channel and I am a daily watcher and fan! Now that that is out of the way, couldn’t one argue that Germany (of all countries given their history) conceiving of an character meant to be he-man’s opposite and making its skin jet black be seen as saying darker the skin, the more evil/anti- good? Personally I’m with you on this one, but I can see where maybe a large company could have some initial hesitation to implications made by the figure. Really informative, thanks for the upload!
He's calles "just" Anti He-Man on the cassette, btw. It's still one of my favorite episodes. Also, this reminds me that I wanted to provide something more on Hordak in the audios on a video I've recently seen. Damn, have to find it.
I didn't know about this character until a few years ago. Glad he got an eventual release. O' course, I wish MOTU Classics would've continued, so they get to ALL the Anti-Eternia characters -- and about a hundred other figures on my Wish List, too . . . .
I really wish that Mattel would make a toy out of that bizarre "Anti-Eternia Castle Grayskull" at 0:59. Also, that He-Man and the Masters of the Multiverse comic book is full of characters that deserve their own action figure: I'd love to see a Prince Keldor/Keldor as He-Man two pack.

The Bizarro World reference doesn´t work though. The Bizarro version of characters are just flawed. In any case would be Earth 3 where there heroes are villains and villains are heroes. However, to be more accurate, now exists the Dark Multiverse where characters that are truly evil and have the same look/style as Anti-Eternian characters is a thing. So that could be the reference :)

it's crazy to hear and think that mattel execs literally associate the color black on a figure as a black person. How out of touch. On a mental level I would expect a child just learning colors to make that kind of connection. That's sad. I'm curious to hear how later someone convinced them to do it.

THe issue is the history of blackface minstrel shows in the U.S.A.......only made worse by this outdated "black as a metaphor for evil" Thats why. It has nothing to do with thinking its a "real black person" which would NOT be considered racist.

It's been a month since those UGLY Head He-Man and Open Mouth Skeletor figures (in the MOTU Origin line) disappear from shelves. And today, at Walmart, Tons had been restocked. I'd say, at least 6 new cases based on the volume. Nothing else, just those same two Effen figures. I don't know what Mattel was thinking.
It's funny.. I'm from germany and I had all the cassette tapes and listened daily to it. If someone said to me, that in 35 years they will be talkin' internationally about this corny germany audioplays, I would have thought that they were nuts :) thanks for the great video!! love your stuff!

Hey i am from germany and please excuse my bad english. In the audioplay skeletor opened an evil parallel universe where all the good guys are bad, they come to fight their alter egos. And yes, they are black because anything is black in the anti universe. The idea of racism is ridiculus, it's more the idea of everyone's fighting his/her shadow. Just like you said. Thanks!

Very interesting, I only heard of Anti He-Man a year or so ago from the comic book. I would say that someone must have actually looked at your idea rather than dismiss it out of hand. This does remind me of a question I had. Why did Mattel never release "teams" of heroes and villains? For example, you could have Night Attack villains, composed of Skeletor, Trapjaw, and Tri-Klops all in dark blue or gray colors to "blend" into the night or Coastal Defense heroes, with He-Man, Man-At-Arms, and Mekanek in either nautical color or maybe just some different accessories. He-Man and Skeletor are the main draws, but the other characters have fans as well, so it seems to be a good way to get the most out of a concept.
Thank you for adding context to Anti-Eternia He-Man. While I don't find him offensive, he's simply not my cup of tea. My only interest in him is as a source of black legs (that don't stink) for an Origins custom I want to finish. (Incidentally, said custom might skirt that line as I'm making a half-Black Avion who has gone to the dark side -- on Eternia, literally -- and serves Skeletor as his master of stealth and aerial assault. With the exception of his head -- inspired by Sho'Nuff and Marvel's Shi'ar -- my original idea was for his upper body to be extra dark brown with black wings.)
As for MotU recolors, over half of vintage MotU has parts recolored from somebody else. My favorite straight recolor is 2002-03's "vs. Snake Men" Sy-Klone. I later learned it was based on a rejected vintage color scheme, but it reminds me of vintage X-Men villains -- Magneto, Vanisher, and the Sentinels.

I really hope Mattel doesn’t catch heat for the upcoming Origins Anti-Eternia He-Man. I’m enjoying the Origins line and wouldn’t want this figure to impact it in a negative way.

I know somebody in the comments on here flipped out when I mentioned a Black Luke so a Black He-Man hehe. That reminds me of Goku Black or Asta from Black Clover when he goes into his "Black" forms among others in series. The figure is kinda cool but why is there not a White He-Man or Snow or Ice? Faker is one of my favorites even if its a pretty simple mash up. Its just an Opinion not a Fact but maybe it was pitched by somebody "Black" so if they said no then it would have been on them not blaming Scotty. Starfire on the Titans show is "black" with "red hair" so was Malcolm X I think :).
There were audio stories on tape with a read along book by Ladybird books here in the UK. The one story I owned revolved around the royal yacht Sea Eagle being frozen in place by Magically created Ice. It also showed that Merman did not have control over all marine life, Sharks and Stingrays yes, but not air breathing mammals like Whales or Dolphins.
That one is "Skeletor's Ice Attack".
the fan made film of Anti-He-Man on youttube is incredible to see! I never once thought about race when i saw this figure...i simply saw him as a Negative alternate reality villian for He-Man. Hey...it worked for Darkwing Duck!
Would your original pitch have gone better if the Masters of the Multiverse comic had already existed? It would have given a definitive storyline to work from to put it into the toyline. Also have you enough of an opinion about DC Comics Masters of the Universe comic series between 2012 and 2020 to make a video about them? The way that they tried to pull together all the different incarnations of MOTU seems similar to how you approached the toyline.

Hey Scott was curious and wondered if you could do a video explaining laws and requirements for weapons and accessory restrictions on standard action figures...my girlfriend was inquiring about it and I gave her what info I could..I figured it would be fun content for you to cover as you are experienced in the field and although things may have changed since you've been in the game I'm sure you know alot more about the subject than me or the everyman...hope to hear back from you on this

fyi; Anti-Eternia Orko is the exception to the rule. He exactly looks like regular orko, he only has a villian attitute. Which was the twist in the episode. So the masters could not identify him at once and they mistake him as regular orko who was nuts. The carbon-orko is Shadow Orko originating from filmation.

The German toys also made it to Belgium and I guess the Netherlands. Some of my first mini comics were in German. One of the German tapes made it into a Dutch translation that came with a He-Man/Skeletor package. I had the tape but mlost it long ago, I did find it uploaded on youtube and soundcloud. I never heard of any other tapes being translated though.
I imagine a lot of the problem is just not 'getting' the Mirror Universe factor (they were probably used to Spock's Goatee )
But I would not be shocked if some of the problem might be due his Origin in the German market and the existence of "Zwarte Piet ", a figure with connections to some Germanic Santa Claus Mythos (in art he tends to have the 'Coal Black' coloring, but in Live Action depictions invariably comes off as 'vintage' Black Face...
If you want to know more about the audio, hit me up. You know why they were made? Because we didn´t had the Filmation series in time to promote the toys, so they did these VERY successful audio tape line and 37 episodes in total. In the subtittles every time you say Anti Eternia He Man it writes "Anti Attorney He Man" , and it got me thinking, why is he a villain at all? XD

I always thought characters from an evil dimension just had goatees, that’s how you could tell them apart…. Or at least that’s what I learned from Star Trek 😉
In Doctor Who around the same time the two main villains in the evil dimension were clean shaven unlike their regular universe counterparts.

i remember in a meeting i pitched an idea, my boss lady hated it, said it was terrible and just a band aid solution and wanted a long term solution.
1 week later she told us at the meeting she finally came up with the solution to our problem and lo and behold, it was my idea that she literally stood there and pitched as if it was hers :P
i still remember another dept. head turning to me and whispering "wasnt that your idea?" i said, "oh well, least its getting done"
i remember her doing my review and she said to me "i hear a lot of good things about you from everyone, everyone has nice things to say......but i dont see it! Do you have a problem taking authority from a female????" it was so awkward....
thankfully she quit a couple months later to take over her parents run down fish store ;p she only got the job because she had a college degree, she didnt know squat about our products or how they were even made/any processes in place :P
anyway, this video brought back those memories, so therapeutically i typed this out to help me(i feel better now) ;P great video nonetheless :)

Anti-Eternian Heman was a fun concept in Germany. I saw his art advertised as a kid back when my family was station in Germany around 85-86. Thought it was kinda cool and I'm black. Not coal or jet black either. Also, could you do a video discussing a controversy of Skeletors face being shown on German TV? Apparently, parents were fearful his Skull face meant death and made them weary to show kids- yet I don't remember this being a thing as my family bought toys and vhs tapes!

As a black person I know for a fact that Plenty of Black kids, when they saw he-man (back in the day) they pretty much said that he turned from white to black. Of course we were joking, but I find it funny that Mattel would think that we would have some kind of major issue with a jet black coal looking he-man. That tells me that Mattel is completely out of touch and don’t actually understand Black people and our culture. (at least back when Scott was working there)

I just want to say this a lot of times when people shut down your ideas and force you out of the row and it's a good idea with sound principles and data backing it up usually what they're trying to do is get you to back off of the project that you're working on take up the materials and recycled idea as their own so that they can take credit and reap the success. I forget what this tactic is called but it's an effective heel tactic to basically bully somebody to get them to abandon a project or a good idea or concept so that they can pick it up and claim it for their selves

Maybe at the time, Mattel thought Anti-Eternia He-Man wasn't necessarily turning He-Man black, but they thought it looked like He-Man was in Blackface, which would be more problematic. Never a good idea for He-Man to look like Amos 'n Andy.
