    I remember the HMAS MELBOURNE in dry dock at Garden Island Dockyard in 1982 when I starded my apprenticeship as a Sailmaker. Great story with a great ending.

    Wow! What a real story. I was about this time a USN officer stationed at both GTMO and Roosy Roads NAVSTA, Puerto Rico. I was ,as a surface officer, always happy to know that we had A4 Skyhawks stationed at both bases. I also was aboard CV62, USS Independence and we had both the A4 and the F14 Tomcat in our fighter wings. I felt safer with the knowledge that those tiny A4's were with us.

    I truly enjoyed this interview. I have no experience in flying anything. But I did haul an old Huey from Tucson, AZ to Travis AF Base in CA to load on a plane headed to Sydney. I hope to get there someday. I also want to thank all you bad ass veterans that have served in all the wars that helped the Americans and save the other countries from tyrannical regimes. Salute from my family in Las Vegas!!!

    When he talks about knees being snapped off, he means that taller pilots were at risk of the knees hitting the instrument panel coaming when coming out. Not sure whether putting the seat up really would have made much difference as by the time the seat is going up the rails the G-forces would probably have straightened your legs out as much as they were going to. From memory there was a height limit for A4 pilots for this reason. This was not a problem in the back seat of a two seater. Not built for comfort though, was like sitting on a wooden church pew for hours without being able to move at all. If you needed to scratch your back, bad luck!!

    So, was your parachute landing site in the Majors Creek State Conservation Area? Or in the mountains west of Monga? I am a "map guy", so places are of interest to me.

      I was wondering the same thing! Obviously a relatively unpopulated area, but heck! Imagine it coming down in your back yard!

      @@raafdocumentaries Somewhere around here. -35.596608748842996, 149.92396484504013 (cut and paste that into googlemaps). I spent a fair bit of time flying in and out of there over the following days, but can't pinpoint it exactly.
