How to do Step 1 in Alcoholics Anonymous

  • This is how I think about step 1 in Alcoholics Anonymous with my personal story of how I got there.
    Step 1 in AA reads:
    Admitted we were powerless over alcohol-that our lives had become unmanageable.
    For me, the powerlessness was pretty cut and dried by the time I got into the rooms of AA. The unmanageable part was little harder to grasp. I did get it, though, and not a moment too soon.

    First time I’ve come across you. I’m 48 days into my recovery-and not for the first time. Really got a lot from your experiences and explanations.

    I remember when I admitted that I was an alcoholic. That started my journey to recovery. On December, 12, 2023 I will be alcohol free for 30 years. My journey is not over yet. One day at a time.

    Step 1 is NOT something we "DO", it's something that happens to us. That "something" is SURRENDER!. Not a little, not partial, not mostly...but complete, unadulterated, and total SURRENDER!
    It is akin to taking a needle to a balloon. We exhale, and cease fighting everything, and everyone...especially ourselves. It is only at this point that we have ANY chance at sobriety.
    We finally, FINALLY, become willing to "live differently". Steps 2 through 12 are our instructions for "living differently".
    I do NOT wake up each day and bemoan the fact that I am powerless over alcohol, and my life is unmanageable, in fact, it's not a part of my consciousness. I have lived the Steps long enough to know that "today" anything is possible, and that my job is to get the hell out of the way, so that I can live to good purpose. Peace...Mark 5/8/1994

    I remember when I sat in aa meetings for twenty years reliving war stories and repeating the same thing over and over.

    • @CamsCampbell
      @CamsCampbell  11 місяців тому +1

      Yep. I remember that too. I’ve not been to a meeting in a few years now. I feel that, for me, they have served their purpose.

      You were attending the wrong meetings. "Step" meetings are where you will find rigorous honesty, hope, kindness, compassion, decency, love, and people living in the solution, instead of the problem. "War stories" will get you nowhere!
      Sobriety is all about "What it's like NOW".

    You've filled in the gaps and said what I'm going through. After a year im still cutting down... Controversial I know. A couple of things have happened recently to make me speed the process along. I'm coming up on 7 months free of amphetamines too. ODAAT

    Thanks for sharing this brother. I’m familiar with addict inside trying to persuade myself I’m not an addict. I’m coming to terms with this. My problem is cocaine. The ‘yets’ are real. I’ve not lost my family, health or finances - but it’s all in the post if I don’t admit I’m powerless.

    I've often wondered if AA even exist in the UK because Alcoholic behavior is so excepted and even considered "cultural" across the pond. Brits often make fun of Americans for having strange a relationship with Alcohol because we binge drink in our 20s then become nearly "sober" in our 30s, My question is how do you continue that lifestyle for your entire life while having several kids and having to make a living.

      That’s where steps 2&3 come in. The big book is really clear that we must have a spiritual experience. That is when the miracle happens! And the obsession is relieved, my relapses always come out of the blue when life is going great

      That’s also the state I’m in when I start drinking again. Things get good and I seem to forget all the negative that comes from drinking.
      As much as I’ve read on the topic of spirituality ( including countless NDE accounts) and have prayed to make a connection: zilch!

    Is AA a cult. It scares me. But I don't want to live like this anymore

    • @CamsCampbell
      @CamsCampbell  7 місяців тому +2

      Not a cult, no. Just a bunch of people in various states of recovery trying to get well and help others to do the same. If it were a cult, it would have leaders, but it doesn't. It's not for everyone, but it's surely worth a try to find out. It saved my life. It could do the same for you.

      It does, but yer man hasn't been to meetings in few years now and feels he's got all he needs from them. Like I've no heard that one before in my 32 years this June 16th and still doing 3 a week minimum.

      Well mayb. But UA-cam is not ‘press radio and films’ really. And this is the modern world. And he’s not speaking on behalf of AA in an official capacity. Which is technically the meaning of the traditions. This video has helped me immensely
