This was a fantastic video. The tower defense design is my preferred bread and butter for zombies. No other map hit like WaW Nacht (aside from WaW Der Riese)
Wow, thank you, that means a lot from you, I love your Halo content! I agree, those early WaW maps are so unique from anything else they’ve put out since, I’ve enjoyed lots of other maps but I always keep going back to the basics more than anything
I feel exactly the same. Der Riese and Nacht. More tower defense vibes. I know they'd be popular, maybe even more competitive. Simply running around the map with busted strong weapons just doesn't hit the same as fortifying a small area.
An overlooked aspect of so many of these video essays is being concise and not bloating the video. Too often I see 3hr video essays lauded as a creator's magum opus, when in reality if they had more time they would've written a shorter script... Props for being thorough without dragging anything out or beating any dead horses
@@GigalassII most first drafts will be longer than a final draft because it is filled with more bloat/unnecessary repetition It's easy to get a point across in many words, it's much more difficult to get the same information across with fewer words Write some multi page essays and you'll see the math definitely maths. If your second draft is longer, you're probably doing something wrong unless you forgot to mention something entirely
You didn't mention that the map was so barebones that they changed the zombie noises from Verrückt forward. It was the zombies of Nacht and that laughter at the beginning of the game that scared me shitless when I was 7. I love your viewpoint from a tower defense perspective. Everything makes a lot more sense about the map when you put it that way, and that feeling never returned except for WW2's Größtes Haus.
Dude when WaW came out me and my friends played this map sooooo much. The amount of times we just backed into the corner with the satchel charge wall buy and just had two people crouching and the rest standing, just staying there and fighting until we got overwhelmed. Some of the best memories I have.
I remember playing this when it first launched trying to convince my friend that the zombie mode had an "alien gun"(ray gun) and he didn't believe me for some reason lmao, simpler times
I still remember when my buddy brought his xbox over to my house during Christmas break to play zombies. Neither of us had ever played anything like it. We were hooked. He spent the night and we played all day, night, and the following day.
I just found your channel today, and i love it. I love looking back and reflecting on the historical zombies game and storyline from treyarch. The art and masterpiece. Nothing like it in gaming history. I love the time you took to do research and make a good documentsry/ presentation thr tight way. Zombies has a place in my heart. Every few years I go in a zombies kick and play the shit out of it for a montj or two every other year it seems.
I am shocked to see such a low view count on such a great video. Zombies has to be one of my favorite games and WaW will always have a special place in my heart. I still have memories of being terrified constantly looking over my back to make sure I wasn't getting flanked by zombies. I never truly appreciated Nacht because I got in to zombies when Bo1 had came out. But I will always remember the nights where I had to play on WaW cause my brothers refused to buy Bo1. keep up the great content, I wish more youtubers would make these kinds of videos.
I'd never really thought about just how much the Zombies design philosophy changed since Nacht until watching this analysis of the map, it's really interesting to see Zombies evolve and change as the maps went on.
It's amazing how many new and fresh topics you managed to bring for such a simplistic map. I really can't wait to see where this channel goes and I hope you continue to grow.
I've been watching all the BO2 map retrospectives and got surprised the only videos you've made are all zombies map retrospectives. I thought for sure you were a well established channel, but I'm happy to see it grow so quickly!
I’ll never forget back when I watched my brother beat WaW and after the credits we saw that infamous cutscene and both were stunned in silence. We were so confused and excited because we both loved zombies and we had no idea this game mode existed. I still remember when the screen cut to black and the blood red letters appeared on the screen, then me and my brother both at the same time went “Nazi Zombies?!?!” Hard to believe that was over a decade ago. It really does seem like a memory from yesterday at times.
God dude this is easily one of the best most niche and well researched videos I've seen on here in a long time. I'm so excited to able to binge the rest
I got introduced through your latest video on Die Rise, I’m genuinely enjoying this series you’re making and I’m looking forward to watching the other ones you made!
I was such a troll back then, I would purposely body-block that doorway that leads to the mystery box and be laughing because the 3 other teammates would be knifing me wanting me to get out of the way
I have fond memories of Nacht just because it was so easy to get high-rounds. It was the 2nd map I got to 100 on. Train in the Box room with either the .357 or the Ray Gun, then sprint across the room and Flamethrower for about 3 seconds. It whittles them down eventually
As much as I love zombies (I REALLY love zombies) I just can’t understand why people play it for so long. I get bored at around round 25-30 and just play something else
@@KobianoRoll i dont get bored of the newer maps, mainly bo3 maps because every gun is pretty much 1 shot with the double PaP abilites, but these older maps yh they get boring around 30 unless ur with friends which makes the maps harder lmao
Absolutely brilliant video. Looking forward to watching the rest of your retrospectives on Zombies! Even the maps I haven't played myself ☺️ nice work, mate!
I think an underlooked feature of zombies at launch atleast is the fact you had to unlock it you had to do the multi hour campaign to havr the right to play it. Imagine if a modern COD did that? Alot of people these days don't even touch the campaign it seems
Nacht is most definitely one of the best zombies maps ever, and it’s simplicity is one of my favorite design choices, it’s lack of modern features like perks in its original appearance gives it a certain appeal, and it’s updated versions benefit in different ways as well, bringing the heart and soul of zombies and giving it the bare minimum to be up to date in most cases.
I would dare make a single correction to this video. Nacht does have an infinite damage weapon and it's the Flamethrower. It kills reliably all the way through, I think it does even post nerf. It's quite literally the true Wonderweapon of this map!
WAW zombies was advertised. They did an interview on it and played nacht dying on round five. Good luck finding it though, it’s been lost to time, so my only source is quite literally “trust me bro” I think another zombies content creator contacted the original journo who did the interview and got a snippet of it tho.
I still remember being an 11 year old kid finishing the WaW campaign on PS3 and thinking how crazy it was to play Nazi zombies. Truly iconic gaming that started it all.
I’ll never forget it I was 7 and it was around 2am completing the campaign with my cousin and it switched to zombies we full on panicked and turned it off 😂
Though as you said the mode would have to become more action focused later on i would like to have seen some more tower defence maps like this one. Also, don't you disrespect ma boi the revolver, the obsectively worst thing you can get off the box is the kar98k
Does anyone know why did they get rid of the timer of when you get the power up I honestly think that was a amazing addition such a shame it was remove
kinda wish they focused on the idea of defending, td idea maybe it would have been fun idk never seen a map like it would be cool they should try some as an extra map
I remember wanting to get shi no numa, but i didn't have any money so i asked my mom's boyfriend at the time for it, he told me that if i got to round 21, i could unlock it, i never got it.
I give Nacht a lot of leeway in comparison to Kino. Nacht was the beginning of the mode and as a new thing, it had no expectations. Kino however, added literally nothing meaningful that future maps (even in its own game) did not overtake. Of course, every map after Nacht built on the mode, but there's a huge difference here. Neither map do I consider great. They're decent starters for their respective games. With that being said, there are better starting maps and far better DLC maps. It is good having casual experiences, even though much of WaW and BO1 have other casual experiences.
I think Nacht is the perfect map. it is simple enough for new players to survive and challenging enough on high rounds for experienced players to enjoy. nacht spans 3 games and a few references in other games. the black ops 3 version is best for survival but can also be pretty challenging because bo3 zombies are more sporadic. the WaW version is bare bones and simple which makes it challenging to newer players. black ops 1 is similar to WaW but with a single perk which gives a slight advantage but not one that's as good. in my opinion Nacht is the best zombies map of all time.
Wait WaW Nacht didn't have carpenter? I could've sworn I remembered it in there as well and if I remember correctly it just repaired the barriers and didn't give points. Or am I mistaken?
I'm surprised you didn't mention that weapons with bipods could be mounted onto the sandbags on the upper floor - not very useful, but also shows the idea of tower defence. I thought it was awesome when I first found it.
Here’s a hot take: Zombies and Cod as a whole became shit after BO2, BO1 and WAW being the only true masterpieces. BO2 was the last solid entry in the franchise tho.
I think that for Black Ops Six, they should add in Nacht Der Untoten with all of the original stuff, and nothing else. No Juggernaugs, no power ups, just you in a bunker, a mystery box, and an endless horde of zombies coming to kill you.
I got nostalgic when you reminded me that Zombies wasn't advertised at all, it made 10 year old me poop his pants when I finished the campaign!
This was a fantastic video. The tower defense design is my preferred bread and butter for zombies. No other map hit like WaW Nacht (aside from WaW Der Riese)

I feel exactly the same. Der Riese and Nacht. More tower defense vibes. I know they'd be popular, maybe even more competitive. Simply running around the map with busted strong weapons just doesn't hit the same as fortifying a small area.
The ray gun and mystery box was a stroke of genius
For real

more companies need to take risks like this. nowadays most are too scared, but look at how well taking a risk worked out for this team
Nacht was zombies in its purest form. Der Rise is still my favorite map, but Nacht is why I was excited for Blops knowing it would have zombies.
Extremely underrated, was expecting this to have 100k+ views

I think shi no numa has the dub for most iterations
there is an infinite damage weapon its the flame thrower doesnt kill them instantly but it technically has infinite damage so it can kill on any round
“You could get something as bad as a revolver” Hold it right there, the revolvers in this game are top tier, sonny
This is a great series; I am watching all of these.
Your videos are so good man
Fun fact: Nazi Zombies was inspired by a flash game called The Last Stand. It's a tower defense/zombie survival game.
