They wanted 2D animation to come back into the limelight after years of neglect by Hollywood itself. Animation itself is for everyone, and it's an art medium as a whole. What these suits from Disney, Hollywood, etc don't understand is that Animation is a human art in of itself, not just for kids but by adults, teens and elders can enjoy the art of animation as a whole.
It's not even just animated movies nowadays, but there are also a lot of other movies, including an unnecessary or destroying continuation of franchises.
