  • Beautiful knife with horrible Quality control. I wouldn't waste my money on this one. Good luck getting a hold of Bucks Warranty service. Buck is not the company it use to be

I have a Buck Spitfire that has a lot of movement up and down and back and forth when locked open. I sent it in to Buck for them to fix. I got the knife back with a note saying it was within their specs and they hadn't done anything. No more Bucks for me.

Buck Spitfire has some vertical play but it's less play than my Spyderco Endura has. A little play is common in backlocks. It doesn't make an audible click sound so it isn't enough to bug me.

Antonios Kekalos same here I had the one with s30v and micarta scales. up and down play and goofy recurve really turned me off of it for the 70 or 80 you can find way better.was going to try the s90v and gold aluminum handles but not sure now.

I have several bucks, 3 original 110’s, 110 slim, 110LT, 877 Maverick, 119 special, 503 prince, 375 duce, 660 pursuit and a 389 canoe. I have had no problems at all with buck or their customer service. Always got a response same or next day. Buck has never let me down and I’m planning on getting a mini spitfire, 112 and a 124. I have many knives but my bucks have always been my best and I prefer them over my others. Especially the 110.

I've owned a Buck 110 since the early seventies. I still have it. Last winter on a very cold day I finally took the point off the blade. I sent the knife back to Buck and for 10$ they replaced the blade and had the knife back to me within 3 weeks. This is on a 45 year old knife, don't forget. I love them. I bought a Buck Spitfire about a year ago. I've had no issues with it. Fit, finish and appearance are great. I agree that the back spring is a bit weak, but I've never had the blade try to open in my pocket, and the softer spring makes the blade a breeze to close. Once I release the lock, the choil falls effortlessly onto my index finger. As for problems with the pivot, I've not seen it with my knife. Based on my experience with the company, I wouldn't hesitate to buy another Buck.

I own 3 Bucks now and they all function flawlessly and hold a great edge. Maybe I've been lucky so far but as long as they continue to deliver on quality I will continue to buy from them and with a track record like they have I don't think they're going out of business anytime soon. Quality+affordability+USA made is what you get with a Buck that you won't find from any other knife maker.

I just bought a Spitfire and none of the problems you mentioned are present. Mine locks up tighter than a virgin. I own tons of knives, and several Bucks. I'm never disappointed. Of course the budget low end Bucks won't be as high quality as their premium stuff, but that is to be expected.

    • @michiganedge4770

Josh Ostrander glad you lucked out and are happy with them. The low end stuff in my opinion is unsafe junk. I’ve handled some high end stuff and wasn’t really impressed myself. Lately I have been carrying simpler knives like the sod buster and opinel. They just work for me and don’t break the bank. People ease up on buck and justify crap because of a cheap price. In my opinion stuff like this and excessive blade and lock play should never leave the factory. Cheap or high end

I have the Mini Spitfire with a lot of the issues presented here, minus the pivot since they seem to have the right size for the Mini models.
A while back i disassembled it and noticed there was a "Walk and Talk" issue, but i found that if you loosen the screw attached to the back lock and loctite it into place it completely fixes it. Grant it they should come out of the factory like that, but nothing that ruins Buck's name in my opinion. Overall super happy with the knife, especially since it was only 30 bucks

Michigander here, well I grew up there. I have a Buck Spitfire that's been my main EDC for 3 years. I honestly have no issues with it. It's been apart a couple times because I do the dirt racing thing and the pivot gets really gritty. Buck isn't for "knife people" anymore. However, it's my favorite folding knife.

    Bought two spitfire 722 knives.
Both had issues. Hard to open, pivot screw on one stripped out on me,sharp edges on the handles that I had to file.
Everyone online always praises Bucks customer service and warranty. Imo...so many people knowing how good the warranty and customer service is tells me that a TON of people have issues with em.
Smh...seems since Chuck passed, quality went downhill. Look at employee reviews on working there...that'll speak volumes about QC.

I have disassembled this knife, and found out how bad this knife is assembled. When the each screws are tight, this blade cannot be opened, and closed. the each screws are basically designed to be loose, and all the screws are just Glued as the basic set. There are no bearing inside, and the smooth is only established based on the loose of the screws with the temporary glues tight on. This is a fake component knife.

We sell then where i work and we got two of each colour all had what i would call problematic blade play and said they should go back and we should not sell them. There is enough blade play for me not to recommend buying one. It is a massive shame that buck have become a company i wont buy from anymore.
I have had 5 of the vantage knives from across the range but not one was perfect! I had an orange spitfire but the blade play was horrible. The best Buck knives i have is two from the bantam range. They are cheaper China made knives but better quality than the USA made bucks!
I find it sad when a long standing knife company such as Buck knives cant produce the same quality that china companies can even though they are charging over double for a similar knife.
Give me my CH3504-G10 with D2 blade(£25 super solid perfect knife) over my Vantage Pro(£100 blade hits the back spacer and will not align central in the handle without the pivot being so tight it wont open with the flipper tab) any day.

I have two Spitfires. I love the Spitfire platform and it's disappointing the issues it has. I have a standard orange Spitfire that for all intents and purposes, is perfect. It has virtually no blade play at all. The other one I have is the one Buck did for SKBlades. It's black with stonewashed hardware and S35vn steel. I love the way the knife looks. However, it has some minor up and down play. It does what it looks like yours did in the video. It's mildly annoying, but I love the Spitfire. It feels great, is thin and very light. I often forget I even have it in my pocket. SKBlades also has a limited run Spitfire with S90v steel. It looks very nice. Buck is supposed to have made the lockup better with that knife. I have read that the blue Spitfire with S30v steel, that Copper & Clad sells, also has noticeable blade play. My orange one must be a fluke. lol

Man I could tell u some stories about Buck and their customer service now. Log story short, I had a collection of 35+ Buck knives. After the experience I had with their “customer service” I’ve sold every knife I own of Buck (except a few sentimental knives) off on eBay and whatnot. I went from over 35 down to 3. I really dislike Buck now. I’ve invested into Spyderco mostly. They care about quality and don’t put out bad products.

Have a straw coloured model from my father. Very solid, very well made, but I hate the blade. It's not a useful shape for EDC. Blade steel is very high quality but I have to take it to a professional sharpener because I can't get a good edge on it at home.

It is unfortunate. They have the blue line and red line models I was interested in. I'd rather buy and clean up old Bucks at antique shops than buy new ones. I was in love with this knife at first about 3 or so years ago - you're absolutely right - really bad QC. I went through literally four replacements of these and each one had problems. Couldn't get any of them to shore up properly. Blade wobble. Blade retention. Finish issues. I gave up, sadly, cuz I loved the geometry and the blade itself as well as the handle. Would have been a solid EDC but it just isn't well made. Surprising. Many, many, many better options in this price range.

Yeah, the quality isn't the best at all. I think the Buck Bantam is bad too, their locks never feel completely solid in place and they always seem to have a bit of side to side blade play. I've owned about 5 bantams, all different coloured handles. But even then, I'm still a loyal fan of the bantam. They're lightweight, fit in the hand perfect, colourful, and I'm not planning to get into a wild knife fight with it anyway. Besides, I always carry a 110 on my waist for more heavy duty work. But if I need to cut something small and immediately, the bantam always gets the job done.

Thanks for the comment I have owned a few bantams as well. I really like the vantage model as well and have owned a few of them. The vantages seem to have blade centering issues. Buck really does a good job with there classics like the 110. I wish they would step up their quality control and switch back to 440c steel with their normal production knives again.

I could not agree more with this video... I recently have had huge issues with the QA/QC and Warranty at Buck... surprised I did not find this video sooner... I sent a Rush in... with an ATS-34 blade and a broken spring... they were going to send me a 420HC one back... I told them no way in hell. So I got it back and there was a centering issue... bad to one side touching the liner... sent it back... they tightened the pivot- fixing the centering but then the assist wouldn't work- sent it in again. Finally corrected. about a year later I bought a buck 55 from cabelas... had it about 8 months or so and noticed the scales were warping a gap big enough to get a business card stock paper between the scale and brass. they sent a new one... a year later it happened again and the ends of the scale warped as well causing it to chip too. Sent it in... got a 293 in return (my choice)- blade was touching a liner causing the deployment to be difficult and want to hang up, sent it back... got a new one... the edge was totally mangled... dull sharpened past the sharpening choil... told them I was done... they wanted to send a different one... it was so night and day I asked how the other two even made it out into circulation?! Their QA/QC has just gotten so incredibly terrible! And CJ just put out a video... and he was so passionate... but his company is falling apart

@Michigan Edge yeah... it's been really sad... I actually spoke with the head of the Warranty department after all of this. He apologized for everything, but I asked how things have gotten this bad?I get it... mistakes happen and a faulty knife... poorly sharpened knife is going to happen occasionally... but 4 in a row?! My wife saw how bad the one blade was... and knows how much I love Benchmade too and told me I would be better off buying a $150-200 benchmade over any buck... and I told the guy from warranty that... and a marketing guy... likely to not buy another one again. It seems like their word and warranty don't mean much

Buck is like Smith & Wesson. Both companies can really only be reached by phone. Don't bother emailing because you'll never hear back. The Spitfire is hit or miss. I have owned 3 and one of them had the issues you brought up. The other two were perfectly put together. It does have a weakness though and I think it's in the lockback rod spring. When you look at a 110 you will see a fully rounded rod that is pretty thick in that place. The Spitfire has a flat rod which I think is a weaker design.

I'm in Michigan too "comrade." I have two 284 Bantams which work fine. I just received a 110 Slim, and a 112 Slim that I ordered. The Slim Ranger 112, is good, but the Slim 110 isn't - at all. It GRINDS when you open it...I've been opening and closing it obsessively for a couple days, and it's actually gotten worse. My wrist is starting to hurt now because I have to really force it open; you'd think it would get better with use, not worse -- I have to send this back. I'm afraid to order a Buck now.
I have to question the USA made hype after this; especially looking around me in 2021, and seeing just how stupid 90 percent of the people are, but I have friends in Europe, and they're just as stupid there so....Speaking of Europe, I was going to buy a "German Made " Black Cat, but from what I read, those particular knives sound 'hit-or-miss' like Bucks. Swiss Army are still good I have a few of them. Just got one of those too with my order, no problems. I'm going to try French Made next. Think I'll order some Opinels. I never hear people complain about them.

I'm glad I saw these comments. I was about to send in my Spitfire with crazy loose and sloppy tolerances, but now I know it would be a waste of money spent on postage as they won't fix it. Wish I had seen this video before I wasted my money on this piece of junk.

Thomas Lim a real bummer every 6 or 8 months or so I take a gamble and purchase another buck knife only to be disappointed. Used to be my favorite company along with Kershaw and lately now that kershaw reached the box stores they pretty much sold out and make junk now too. I own $100-?200 spydercos but I lately carry a $20 Swiss army tinker. The one company that has not sold out and still makes good quality knives for a reasonable price

@@michiganedge4770 I've since moved onto fixed blades. Less tolerances to worry about. Certainly Buck can't screw that up......? I guess I'll never know ha

I guess I am fortunate my Spitfire the more I use it the easier it is to open but the Locking mech is solid and safe gotta bear down on it, SOLID Blade lockup, my only complaint is the handles inside edges are sharp

Havok Bjj that’s good maybe they finally stepped up their quality control. I haven’t purchased a buck knife in a few years now. I only carry cold steel or spyderco

XDM50 yeah every product I purchase from them lately has QC issues. when it gets to the point where I am taking a gamble all the time if I am getting a decent product I would rather just not deal with them

Just to tell you. If you dont have the time to go to the actual buck knives store. Wait till you have time because I got mine from the actual buck knives store. Same one and I had no problems with it. Don’t order buck knives of of amazon because a lot of them aren’t real buck knives. Trust me. I’ve done the same as you.

nicestknives I hate videos like this but it's the truth. my first knife was the buck 110 that I purchased for myself. Buck use to be about pride and quality. so sad

RickN Backer I was dumb and just ordered a mini version a week ago. Horrible quality control. The pivot flops around like they don't know how to drill a hole properly. You can't tighten all of the hardware because if you do the blade will not open. The hardware is not the right thickness for the knife. Sadly the Chinese are producing better quality all around so they will be getting my money instead of Buck. It's really a shame

They were crappy to me recently on an e mail that took days to get a response. Basically I ordered a 110 in s530v with the nickel bolsters and black g10 scales , the reason I bought it was because I wanted the stamped 110 with a marking year on the blade, also it was pictured this way on the website, I got a different blade with laser etching and no year marking and they were rude and said they choose to use that blade. This is after I bought 5 buck knifes in a month from them, the 722 spitfire is also one of them and is seizing up within a month .It had a bad edge and wont keep an edge good either. It will finish its life hard now im done carrying it, because the 100 dollar 110 has no year marker that I wanted to just keep in the drawer and pass on to my new son on the year he was born I will carry the 110 instead of this spitfire.
