Hey ❤ I am native Hawaiian born and raised on Oahu. I just want to say I love you two and apologize for the hate you received. I never knew any of that happened but I do know Hawaiians are very protective of our culture, language, and land- as we should be. Not only was the land forcefully taken by illegal treaty- but Hawaiians were BANNED from speaking Hawaiian, dancing hula, or any cultural practice for that matter during that time. Imperialistic views were forced, and they were punished for not abiding. I speak Hawaiian. The language is so special to us because our entire culture is tied to the ‘ōlelo (language). We have only oral history passed down for generations. I see the reasons why Hawaiians are so protective- but hate is never the answer! The people who threatened you and called you names could stand to practice ALOHA during that time, and teach/show love and education instead of hate. Anyway I love you guys and have for a long time! ❤❤

@@danaceyambao this is not an apology video. This is them sharing their point of view from what happened at that time and expressing how clueless they were. They’ve apologized many times. People make mistakes and they grow to learn. I seen a lot of this taking place back then and almost all of it was NOT locals giving the threats and backlash. I’m all for standing up for others.. but the things is this is social media. people see one person spreading the hate and then they blow it completely out of proportion taking it way too far because they’re behind a screen and want to feel involved before understanding the full situation.

As a male, I appreciate what Abby is saying so much. There's nothing wrong with a traditional relationship if both people in the relationship are in agreement with each other and that's what they want. If both parties agree, it shouldn't be up to anybody else to say they're doing anything wrong.

Absolutely. Nobody is perfect, when someone’s lives are on camera you get to see a lot of what they do. The second you show anything on camera that isn’t perfect you get torn down. It’s very upsetting.

Abby, don't feel over dramatic or bad for having fear and strong emotions about this experience. What you're experiencing is called trauma response. You guys are so brave to share the details of your story. Trauma can happen anytime, anywhere. Like you were saying, it literally changes your brain chemistry. Being in a similar location or situation can trigger those same emotions. It's the same brain processes that happen when someone has ptsd. I've been discovering all this myself the last year with my trauma. Your experiences are hard and they matter just as much as anyone else's.

They didn’t give a trigger warning, and Matt even said “I don’t know if we will leave this in,” it wasn’t a necessary part of a story that NEVER SHOULD HAVE BEEN CENTERED ON THEM IN THE FIRST PLACE. So yes, using your self harm to gain sympathy from your followers when you should be taking accountability for your own actions is manipulative. I am sorry that the situation impacted her that much AND they’ve still yet to acknowledge how much they impacted Hawaii however, we are supposed to feel bad about that, and forget about what they did- if you cannot see how this is wrong I don’t know what to say. I can be empathetic that this impacted her mental health, and simultaneously acknowledge that it shouldn’t have been the focus of the video and frankly shouldn’t have been mentioned alongside this conversation. Is it a conversation she could have? Yes…but not like this, it wasn’t appropriate.

We were getting into the “social media creators world” mid 2020 and we researched many couple’s channels but chose to follow only 3. Your channel is the one that speaks to us the most. It depends on what “traditional” means to you. If traditional is anti gay/anti lgbtq/anti disabled people to you then no, it’s not ok. If it means just a woman belongs in the kitchen and bedroom and church then whatever you wanna do, whatever makes you happy and is consensual then cool. Not for me, but that’s cool for whoever likes it.

I heard you say (when you were talking about why you want Griffin not on socials) that you were an adult and you couldn’t handle it, but you did handle it. And not only did you handle it, everything you & Matt did as a result of this happening was thoughtful, gracious, and in alignment with your character. It makes a whole lot of sense why this would still make you emotional. I hope with time and healing this feels even more okay. ❤️
I just want to add a little more as well: feeling emotional about this isn’t dramatic at all, because these kinds of events (while they may not change our character or view of ourselves) can change our worldview & or ideas about the world. I can see you still have so much positivity because that’s just you guys, but having an event like this occurs shows us what others can be capable of when they have hatred or anger (which is really just fear) in their hearts. Which leads the impact of such events to make such a lasting impression!!

I am native Hawaiian and heard about this. I am fair in skin color and was told by so many other Polynesians growing up (who were not native Hawaiian themselves) to go back to the mainland. It was so weird to me as a child and teenager. I live on the mainland now and it is honestly refreshing in a lot of ways. The racism out there is very prevalent by so many people and it is ridiculous
And this is why I don’t have Instagram, Facebook, tick tock etc. so much hate in this world that’s not needed and can truly hurt someone emotionally. And my kids won’t be on any platforms either until they are adults. I love how open you guys are and are able to explain how scary it can be to be on social media. From someone that was born and raised in Hawaii. I believe that as a society, we should strive to be more understanding and accepting of one another. Rather than participating in a 'cancel culture', we should look to forgive, learn, and move forward with a positive mindset.

I dont know much about Hawaii I'm just a indiana girl here lol but if the Hawaiian language almost disappeared and there trying to bring it back, why would all the native hawaiians come for matt and abby for using aloha. Maybe I'm just uncultured but wouldn't they want anyone to learn and be interested to rebuild that community even if they are a only caucasian. ( idk if they are only caucasian, I'm just guessing off skin tone)

Great video, thanks for sharing. My relationship of 5 years ended a month ago. The love of my life decided to leave me, Really love him so much, i can’t stop thinking about him. I’ve tried my very best to get him back in my life but to no avail, I’m frustrated because i literally can't envision my life with anyone else. I’ve done my best to get rid of the thoughts of him but I can’t, I don’t know why I’m saying this here, I really miss him and just can’t stop thinking about him.
Your feelings are understandable, It's always difficult to let go of someone you love, i was in a similar situation when my wife of 12 years left me, i couldn't just let her go. I did all I could to get her back, I had to seek the help of a spiritual adviser who helped me bring her back.

Have Matt and Abby ever openly discussed their faith? I've been so convinced since I started following them that they are a compassionate and loving Christian couple, but I can understand why they wouldn't come out and openly say they're Christian. My husband and I are both 25 and have found such an amazing community of young believers through our church that have become the most genuine friends we've ever had. Matt and Abby remind me so much of the people we love in our church family and I just can't help but think that they are the way that they are because of God's love.

How two people as down to earth and lovely as this couple can be so torn down and made to feel so rubbish is beyond me. I don’t watch / listen to podcasts or vlogs with exception to Matt and Abby as they honestly encourage me to be a better person every day! The backlash of innocent mistakes is so upsetting. There needs to be less keyboard warriors and more people like these two ❤️
This has been by far my most favorite podcast thus far. At 49 minutes, talking about the silent followers-that was so sweet. I have watched you guys on youtube since 2020-2021. I found you guys on TikTok and just really enjoyed watching your guy's videos in the morning when getting ready for school. You guys are amazing!! I think the entitlement that people have to take time out of their day to comment hate or even make a whole video hating on someone is just so baffling to me. Thank you for addressing things and being so vulnerable about your already exposed lives. People sometimes forget that “influencers” are just people too.
Imagine the entitlement influencers have to ignore the requests of an entire population of people to stay off the island during the pandemic because it was putting a major strain on resources. That’s entitlement. Imagine putting Aloha on a shirt and getting called out about it and making an active choice to ignore the feedback for FIVE ENTIRE DAYS because “you don’t care what folks have to say about you,” only to apologize when you realize you’re being “cancelled” and even then not actually take accountability, that’s entitlement. Imagine MONTHS LATER when you’ve had time to process coming to a podcast and victimizing yourself for an hour, making it about how hard you had it and manipulating folks as if this entire situation wasn’t avoidable. THAT is entitlement. Asking you to take accountability when you cause harm isn’t entitlement, it’s just what happens when you live your life publicly and make a mistake.
Small surprises are the life blood of marriage. My hubby empties the dishwasher most days before leaving for work and I feel so grateful for it everytime I open up the dishwasher and don't have to empty it myself.
People don’t give enough time to understand people or the situation before they make a judge or misplace their anger without thinking if it hurt the maker of the video because it’s online and not in person. As a long term follower (before Covid and before you were even engaged) I had no idea any of this happened. You’ve always been transparent and supportive of everyone/everything. Let people think what they want because you know who you are as a human and those that matter in your life know too. People in the public eye will always get hate comments and it’s so sad. I feel for you guys. I got cancelled last year for ending a friendship with someone whose behaviour was out of control and who became very disrespectful towards me. An entire music scene cancelled me for it. I'm not welcome at gigs. If I do go, I am bullied to my face. I lost most of my friends. Most of my remaining friends have never stood up for me as they are desperate to please my cancellers and I know they would willingly throw me under the bus if they were forced to with ultimatums from them. I have some pretty intense "feelings" when I see videos of my friends going to events with my cancellers and excluding me because I'm like kryptonite to their social standing. I have one friend who is so scared of being cancelled like me (mainly by the woman who cancelled me too), that she has to fake friendships with people she despises (despised for good reason!). She is terrified she will be found out one day. I live a very lonely life now. But honestly, it's better than the constant harassment I was receiving while still trying to grasp onto those friendships... and wow, was the harassment intense. I was receiving hate messages from people I'd only ever said hi to, claiming that they somehow know me better than myself and my close friends do. 😂 I long for a day when we don't do this to each other. Cancelling was originally meant to be used against people with great power who were doing terrible things. Now people use it to solve interpersonal conflict or to attack people they simply don't agree with for petty things. I hate to say it, people on the left face this nonsense more. I am staunchly left wing and I can tell you now, the far rad left who love cancel culture, aim it at their allies far more than actual people/corporations that deserve it. They also do it more to people with the least power. I hate it. I'll always be left wing, but I tend to stay the hell away from most left wing people now until I can ascertain whether they engage in unwarranted cancel culture. Ugh. 2023, right?
It will only get worse until people realize they have the power to stand united and stop it. Until they stand up to the people doing it and the cancelations turn into boomerangs. In the meantime they are continuing to steal our country right out from under us while they continue stirring and whipping the frenzy. Stand up for what is right even if you are standing alone. You will be amazed how many people come from the shadows to finally stand beside you. Each of you have way more power than you understand.

Okay when they talked about feeling so out of control with the first incident I teared up. The world is such a hateful place anymore. As a silent follower, I will not be silent this time! Y'all are my favorite youtube couple and I have followed for awhile. Hate is tough. People need to watch what they say, especially online. You cannot take that back. Hate hurts; words hurt. It can be very hard. I remember the "Aloha dudes!" time period for the channel and I didn't think anything was wrong with it at all! I also had no idea y'all were getting such horrible backlash. You both, from what I can tell, have such sweet, kind hearts, and I admire the genuine nature of the channel, and of you guys! Dude you guys made me so happy when you said shout out to the silent followers 😭I don't comment very often, but sometimes I feel bad not commenting on videos because I want you to know how much you've impacted me and made me happy. Hey ❤ I am native Hawaiian born and raised on Oahu. I just want to say I love you two and apologize for the hate you received. I never knew any of that happened but I do know Hawaiians are very protective of our culture, language, and land- as we should be. Not only was the land forcefully taken by illegal treaty- but Hawaiians were BANNED from speaking Hawaiian, dancing hula, or any cultural practice for that matter during that time. Imperialistic views were forced, and they were punished for not abiding. I speak Hawaiian. The language is so special to us because our entire culture is tied to the ‘ōlelo (language). We have only oral history passed down for generations. I see the reasons why Hawaiians are so protective- but hate is never the answer! The people who threatened you and called you names could stand to practice ALOHA during that time, and teach/show love and education instead of hate.

People make mistakes and they grow to learn. I seen a lot of this taking place back then and almost all of it was NOT locals giving the threats and backlash. I’m all for standing up for others.. but the things is this is social media. people see one person spreading the hate and then they blow it completely out of proportion taking it way too far because they’re behind a screen and want to feel involved before understanding the full situation.

Abby, don't feel over dramatic or bad for having fear and strong emotions about this experience. What you're experiencing is called trauma response. You guys are so brave to share the details of your story. Trauma can happen anytime, anywhere. Like you were saying, it literally changes your brain chemistry. Being in a similar location or situation can trigger those same emotions. It's the same brain processes that happen when someone has ptsd. I've been discovering all this myself the last year with my trauma. Your experiences are hard and they matter just as much as anyone else's.
Abby used to be so careful and cautious about what she said. I felt like she used to hold back. Kinda loving how she’s just putting her opinion out there now and with so much passion 😂

Unfortunately, many popular tourist destinations will have your share of crime. Locals don't go to certain places at night or alone, either. You learn to place your valuables in your car trunk especially at beaches, etc... Like anywhere, an ounce of precaution goes a long way.

They didn’t give a trigger warning, and Matt even said “I don’t know if we will leave this in,” it wasn’t a necessary part of a story that NEVER SHOULD HAVE BEEN CENTERED ON THEM IN THE FIRST PLACE.
So yes, using your self harm to gain sympathy from your followers when you should be taking accountability for your own actions is manipulative.
I am sorry that the situation impacted her that much AND they’ve still yet to acknowledge how much they impacted Hawaii however, we are supposed to feel bad about that, and forget about what they did- if you cannot see how this is wrong I don’t know what to say.

I just want to add a little more as well: feeling emotional about this isn’t dramatic at all, because these kinds of events (while they may not change our character or view of ourselves) can change our worldview & or ideas about the world. I can see you still have so much positivity because that’s just you guys, but having an event like this occurs shows us what others can be capable of when they have hatred or anger (which is really just fear) in their hearts. Which leads the impact of such events to make such a lasting impression!!

I am native Hawaiian and heard about this. I am fair in skin color and was told by so many other Polynesians growing up (who were not native Hawaiian themselves) to go back to the mainland. It was so weird to me as a child and teenager. I live on the mainland now and it is honestly refreshing in a lot of ways. The racism out there is very prevalent by so many people and it is ridiculous
And this is why I don’t have Instagram, Facebook, tick tock etc. so much hate in this world that’s not needed and can truly hurt someone emotionally. And my kids won’t be on any platforms either until they are adults.

Have Matt and Abby ever openly discussed their faith? I've been so convinced since I started following them that they are a compassionate and loving Christian couple, but I can understand why they wouldn't come out and openly say they're Christian. My husband and I are both 25 and have found such an amazing community of young believers through our church that have become the most genuine friends we've ever had. Matt and Abby remind me so much of the people we love in our church family and I just can't help but think that they are the way that they are because of God's love.

Imagine putting Aloha on a shirt and getting called out about it and making an active choice to ignore the feedback for FIVE ENTIRE DAYS because “you don’t care what folks have to say about you,” only to apologize when you realize you’re being “cancelled” and even then not actually take accountability, that’s entitlement.
Imagine MONTHS LATER when you’ve had time to process coming to a podcast and victimizing yourself for an hour, making it about how hard you had it and manipulating folks as if this entire situation wasn’t avoidable. THAT is entitlement.
Asking you to take accountability when you cause harm isn’t entitlement, it’s just what happens when you live your life publicly and make a mistake.
Small surprises are the life blood of marriage. My hubby empties the dishwasher most days before leaving for work and I feel so grateful for it everytime I open up the dishwasher and don't have to empty it myself.

I feel for you guys. I got cancelled last year for ending a friendship with someone whose behaviour was out of control and who became very disrespectful towards me. An entire music scene cancelled me for it. I'm not welcome at gigs. If I do go, I am bullied to my face.
I lost most of my friends. Most of my remaining friends have never stood up for me as they are desperate to please my cancellers and I know they would willingly throw me under the bus if they were forced to with ultimatums from them. I have some pretty intense "feelings" when I see videos of my friends going to events with my cancellers and excluding me because I'm like kryptonite to their social standing.
I have one friend who is so scared of being cancelled like me (mainly by the woman who cancelled me too), that she has to fake friendships with people she despises (despised for good reason!). She is terrified she will be found out one day.
I live a very lonely life now. But honestly, it's better than the constant harassment I was receiving while still trying to grasp onto those friendships... and wow, was the harassment intense. I was receiving hate messages from people I'd only ever said hi to, claiming that they somehow know me better than myself and my close friends do. 😂
I long for a day when we don't do this to each other. Cancelling was originally meant to be used against people with great power who were doing terrible things. Now people use it to solve interpersonal conflict or to attack people they simply don't agree with for petty things.
I hate to say it, people on the left face this nonsense more. I am staunchly left wing and I can tell you now, the far rad left who love cancel culture, aim it at their allies far more than actual people/corporations that deserve it. They also do it more to people with the least power. I hate it. I'll always be left wing, but I tend to stay the hell away from most left wing people now until I can ascertain whether they engage in unwarranted cancel culture.

As a silent follower, I will not be silent this time! Y'all are my favorite youtube couple and I have followed for awhile. Hate is tough. People need to watch what they say, especially online. You cannot take that back. Hate hurts; words hurt. It can be very hard. I remember the "Aloha dudes!" time period for the channel and I didn't think anything was wrong with it at all! I also had no idea y'all were getting such horrible backlash. You both, from what I can tell, have such sweet, kind hearts, and I admire the genuine nature of the channel, and of you guys! I have been a follower for awhile, and I will continue to be!
I have only recently found your channel and I absolutely love your videos! I can’t believe that people are so horrible - I think they are jealous of your success! I love your relationship - you seem so supportive of each other and so in love! Keep strong and try and ignore these awful people! What these people don’t understand is that your videos are simply snapshots of your daily lives! I have watched your videos with my 87 year old mother and she is amazed by how much Matt helps with your beautiful babies! X

Dude you guys made me so happy when you said shout out to the silent followers 😭I don't comment very often, but sometimes I feel bad not commenting on videos because I want you to know how much you've impacted me and made me happy. But most of the time I just don't feel like actually saying anything, maybe because I don't want it to get taken the wrong way or anyone hate on it, like you guys mentioned.

Silent follower here :) Just wanted to say I have followed you guys from the very beginning, from the first youtube video you posted, to getting famous on tiktok. I have truly enjoyed watching you guys grow as college students into full on parents, how freaking special! I'm your guys' age, and getting advice from y'all has really been so encouraging and helpful for me in my young adult years. It can be scary. Including social media! The hate you guys have had to endure is beyond crazy to me, and it's really sad to me how this generation and society gets so offended and bent out of shape over the tiniest aspects. I'm glad you guys are looking at this from a more positive view point. You guys KNOW who you are, and people like me are able to see your true, genuine colors. Please don't let the hate you've recently received deter you away from doing what you love and the joy that you bring to so many of our lives :) I don't know if you'll see this or if it will reach you, but I just wanted to let you know from all the other silent followers that we love you, we're here for you, and we support you 110%. We love you dudes!
