  • According to the National Institute of Statistics, in 2014, the number of persons with disabilities in Tunisia was 241,240 people, representing 2.2 per cent of the country's total population. This figure is likely underestimated, according to World Health Organisation reports.
This number has increased over the years, and people with disabilities face many forms of discrimination and injustice that violate their rights and dignity.
Although Tunisia has ratified the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, Tunisian legislation concerning the rights of people with disabilities is still not in line with the content of the Convention. People with disabilities suffer from many difficulties, including difficulties in access to equitable and inclusive education and difficulties in access to justice. On the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, which is celebrated around the world every year on 3 December to promote the rights and well-being of people with disabilities, we invite you to watch this interview with the lawyer Habib Baccouche, who explains the main obstacles to access to justice and education faced by persons with disabilities in Tunisia.
