KTM 85 FORKS ON A SURRON ULTRA BEE! FIRST RIDE

  • We mounted a KTM 85 WP 43mm Air Fork onto an Ultra Bee to test out suspension upgrades on the Ultra Bee. While this is not a production ready DIY kits at this time, Brett saw it in the shop and couldn't resist throwing a leg over it and putting it to the test against 450's on a super muddy and deep rut motocross track to see what an Ultra can do against the gas bikes. With better suspension, 18/21 Dunlop MX34 tires, and an EBMX X-9000 set at 16kw, can Brett catch and pass Brian on his CRF450r?

    it's great! I have an 85 fork, and I'm waiting for the crows xtrig to see how it fits. Is it complicated? Any parts to have machined? I'm going to look at the shock too but it doesn't look easy...

      You'll have to source bearings, and make a spacer to get the spacing right. And you will loose all the mounting points for all of the electronics, ignition, and front light. This is a major problem with the stock controller you need all that stuff. We have an X-9000 on ours so it wasn't a big deal to remove it all. It will be a lot easier when an adapter kit is available to do this.

    I hope u answer ?'s but I jave tripple clamps and wp forks from a super mini and I was wondering if I can use the warp 9 21in wheel w the reg disc bc I guess My question is I know im gonma.have to get hydro brakes but am.i gonna jave to get a New wheel and disc or can I use the same wheel and disc w hydro brakes or will I need a new wheel and disc

    I love my Ultra Bee as is. I'm not bashing people who upgrade them or sell upgrades but I don't want to go down that rabbit hole because it's not my only bike and upgrades could cost thousands of dollars. I don't race or go particularly fast. I ride off-road, off-track in the mountains and it's good enough. Except the tires and there are 19" tires which are superior without changing the wheels. My only upgrades are a Motoz Terrapactor 100/90-19" rear tire and KTM handguards. I'll probably swap the front tire for a 70/100-19" sooner or later and that's good enough for me.

      100% understand the bike is really great un-modified. However you really need a 21" with a 100/90-19 in the rear. the bike has an issue with stock tires and front end wanting to wash out. Putting a 100/90-19 in the rear with stock front is a very dangerous setup, we've had multiple customer call us up after doing this and tell us how dangerous the bike was to ride with that setup. For us it's a bit of a "told you so" moment. Hate to see you crash from a setup that is easily fixed. Great news for you, we will finally have 21" ONLY upgrades very very soon for you at a great price.       I mean that’s just like your opinion man… Plenty of reasons to upgrade a surron. Even if you don’t want to make it faster you could get a bigger battery and double your ride time. Plus things like the foot pegs, seat, light and handlebars are pretty awful stock and not that expensive to upgrade. I started off upgrading the bars and foot pegs for feel, and the skid plate and peg brace for durability. Then I went 72v (battery, controller and motor) and personally im extremely happy with the extra speed, torque and ride time. Plus the ability to custom tune more modes. And then finally for safety sake I got new tires, brakes and 250mm rotors and a new sprocket for wheelies. Even If you are happy with stock power I definitely would still recommend Atleast upgrading the little things I mentioned above that suck stock plus a peg brace, mudflap, led kit and brakes (or atleast new pads). Yolu could do that all for a couple hundred bucks and it would drastically improve the comfortability, safety and durability of your bike. Personally I plan on l doing my wheels next and then the fork and rear shock. After that just littler stuff mostly for aesthetics.

      @@UnderARockProd do you got a list of things you've done? Lots of areas I'd be interested in. I just upgraded the handlebars which helped a lot (tall rider here), but I'd love to know how to improve. What did you do to the lights, just aesthetic or improved night vision?

      I wonder why then would KTM put 19” wheels front and back on their enduro and 17” front and rear on their supermoto which they are nearly identical bikes in geometry and specs. oh cause most people ride them on street bike trail or a mix of everything not strictly dirt and paths littered with obstacles that are needed to plow over ..
      I’ve never had my front wash out on anything outside of sand or dirt and would feel like a circus freak using anything close to the size of the tire we up like is on my KTM 250., they’re smliply way too big for this bike, in weight , and the bike isn’t powerful enough to spin them, even supermoto wheels at regular sizes are too big wt a 3.5 rear is maxing them out and 30 wide front 17” seems like the correct size and weight limit for this bike as stock

    You have 18s on the back and 21s on the front?
    I'm wondering for supermoto setup if running ultra wide 16s on the back and 17s on the front is ok or is that dumb lol. Not trying to fabricate stock fork guards or shave the tire for the wide 16s to work

      We are working on this right now and you'll be blown away when you see what fits on the Ultra Bee, it's pretty insane. It will be 17/17 which is the gold standard for SM

    my ultra is fully kitted out. ebmx battery, controller, wheels, etc. al thats left is the suspension and ultra ebmx motor

      SWEET! it's going to take some more time to have good suspension options for the Ultra, it's so new everyone is working to create them. The more patient you can be about suspension upgrades the more happy will probably be with the options that are coming.

      This is cool to hear, I just bought an ultra bee. I am planning to do what you have done too. The ebmx motor seems to make the ultra bee have crazy power!!! I will have to hear from you on how it is and there is no good 30kw content out there

      not enough to worry about it. Might actually be lighter because it's an air fork. We'll have to weigh them.

    Hi! Nice build. My 85 forks just came in today. But the first issue i noticed is that the axle is not the same size. Did you guys use a ktm front hub?

      Yes, you have to use the KTM hub sadly which greatly limits wheel opportunity for the fork

    What front fenders and number plate did you use?

      The entire front end is the KTM85 including the wheel which is usually a 19" but we rebuilt it into a 21"

    What spring would you recommend for a 82 kg rider? 500 or 550?

      probably the 500 unless you do big jumps. The fork needs matching springs which are not yet available, we are working on that but KKE did not make it easy to upgrade springs.

      We had started down the path of putting KYB forks from a Yamaha onto the Ultra Bee, but they are too heavy and a bit to long so we killed that project. An air fork from WP would be lighter than that KYB but still long. Instead we are patiently awaiting the arrival of some brand new forks coming to market for the Ultra Bee, on a premium option and one a more affordable yet high quality option. Stay tuned for more on that as they get closer to release. We are also now offering spring and tune upgrades for the OEM Ultra Bee fork.

      HAHA, well...when our Vargs arrive (very soon) you are certainly going to see this bike going head to head with it. We are curious to find out if you can build an ULtra Bee at a much lower price point than a Varg and where it's competitive against the Varg. We actually think the Ultra might have the the same range as the Varg at 1/2 the price, where else is it competitive for less money? Can't wait to find out!

      This was very much a DIY rough-in project just to test what the fork feels like on the bike, not at all a finished bolt on kit. So, the cost is mostly the KTM front end which we see sell on the used market in the $2500-$3000 range most of the time.       Watch our 3 part video on Gold Member, the conversion is much more involved than just the adapter kit, the fork is 3" too long and completely destroys the geometry of the bike, in short, it won't turn. You must raise the rear of the bike to make it turn again. By the time you are finished fixing all of the problems you've built a $15,000+ bike. The EXT Ferro is a much better solution on the small Light Bee and Talaria. The 85 fork fits the almost full sized ULtra Bee perfectly.

      @@ChargedCycleWorks i had fox 40s on my 72v57ah bac 4k build and those mtb forks did not satisfy my needs, if the ferrera forks are anything like those they wont work for me. Nothing beats dirt bike suspension imo but you guys have more knowledge then me on suspension

    How do you think the KTM 85 fork would work on tight single track (with heavier rear spring to match)? And nice work on the install, I think a lot of people are going to be 85 fork shopping soon, Lol.

      The OEM KKE is pretty decent for a lot of people especially for trail riding. Tuning the KKE is taking some time because they did not design the fork to accept larger (stiffer) springs in it which is a massive bummer. You would want to wait for us to have much stiffer KKE fork springs if you are a big guy. It's hard to compare a high quality MX fork to a chinese fork, there is a very big difference. There are many problems however, if you look close you'll see a number plate. We have removed: headlight, LCD display, and a ton of wiring from the bike which we were only able to do with the X-9000 controller since the stock LCD is not used after the controller upgrade. The ignition switch is literally zip tied to the fork. Without a controller you can't easily do this upgrade until someone offers a full kit to adapt all those parts to a moto fork...probably why there is not adapter kit yet on the market. IMO ride it like it is for 2023 and wait for suspension upgrades in 2024...it will be worth the wait, there is some good stuff coming for Ultra Bee in 2024 :)
