Granny Clanger is a professional-quality 1930s Bakelite whistle found on e-bay Dan Maddicott, the Clangers’ series producer for Coolabi, is also the ‘voice’ of the Clangers. When the production team couldn’t find a professional swannee whistler or an unsolicited one that they were happy with, Dan was suggested. He has a background in playing wind instruments, having played recorder since he was four and clarinet from the age of 11, reaching a Grade 8 standard. He also worked for an educational publisher and, among other things, produced recordings for English language teaching which specifically aimed to teach the intonation of language to students. “I have a lot of experience of the unique ‘tune’ of sentences, something that is invaluable in the context of the Clangers,” says Dan.
