I remember seeing this very episode as a kid! But in Black & White, my parents didn't buy a color TV until Christmas time in 1968.
We did not get a color-TV until about 1972. Dad bought it without asking permission from mom. It made watching the "Rose Parade" on New Year's Day much better. No longer had to listen to the reporters saying what color the flowers & decorations and costumes/uniforms were. Mom did not want one because she said they would give people cancer.

This show aired three days before my 11th birthday.
This was one of my favourite game shows, especially when Betty White was a guest.
I didn't know this show, back then. I was only 4 years old. Guy Williams was great in Lost in Space. He passed away way too soon.

I was turning six. But loved watching Lost in Space in the 70s and beyond. Guy was so handsome.

Well on the Ford site the economy vehicle's MRSP is $28,280. So I Think the 950 would be more like $95,000 today.

I was a year and a half when this aired..
Irene Ryan dropped dead on the stage while singing in the Broadway play Pippin, in 1972. Heart attack right there on stage. I had a drama teacher in college who was there.
According to Wikipedia and other sources she suffered an apparent stroke during a performance and flew home and was hospitalized with an inoperable brain tumor.
Guy Williams died too young also.

Melvin Geloneck I expect at least most of it was due to the exacting phasing and play of the game. Another portion is the poor audio quality of the auditorium, not conducive to the aforementioned play, and that live audio feed had not yet been implemented.

Yep. It was annoying. Because he would not go to a Hearing Aid store and buy a hearing aid device, he had to lean over and breathe on the celebrity player and act like the clue word was wrong. The show Producer / Director should have ordered him to buy a Hearing Aid.
Granny is gesturing SOOOO much, and saying two words... I'm guessing they were a bit more lenient with the rules since it was families playing?
They also let her get away with those things when she guested on the show along with Bob Crane. * Donna Douglas also appeared that week as a contestant, btw.

If not for a last minute decision by Pernell Roberts, Guy WIlliams might never have ended up on "Lost in Space". Roberts was very unhappy with the kinds of parts that were being written for his character on "Bonanza", Adam Cartwright. He wanted out at the end of the 5th season. Williams was written into the show as Ben Cartwright's nephew, Will and a love interest was found for Adam. At the end of the season, Adam was supposed to get married and move East to work the profession that he went to college to study: engineering.
Perhaps because this new plot line made his role meatier, Roberts decided to continue for another season at the 11th hour. Williams was no longer needed as a replacement to fit the existing format. Scrambling for a new resolution to the story line they had begun, a love triangle is written into the plot and Adam's fiance decides that she likes Will better. She marries Will and they ride off into the sunset.
Roberts changes his mind again during the sixth season and this time sticks to his guns. Although his character is mentioned from time to time, he is never brought back. When Dan Blocker dies, they don't even have him come back for a funeral episode.
David Canary ends up filling the void as "Candy", a non-relative ranch hand. Guy Williams isn't available, even if the producers had wanted him, because he has landed the lead role on "Lost in Space".
It looked like Roberts made a career mistake, although he found plenty of work on stage, with TV movies and guest roles on TV, plus an occasional movie. Fourteen years after "Bonanza" he found stardom again, playing the title role in "Trapper John, M.D.", Ironically, he was playing the older version of a character (without a shred of physical resemblance) that was written off of "M*A*S*H" because the actor playing that role (Wayne Rogers) was disgruntled with the quality of the scripts he was getting, being shoved more and more into the background behind Alan Alda.
Show Biz actors and actresses think too highly of themselves. They should be happy any Network / Casting Director / Director / Talent agent had anything to do with them. High strung / self-absorbed / egotistical / one step from the Psych ward people.

Guy Williams was a JFK look a like.
That look was not uncommon for men in the early and mid 1960's. That full "dry look" hair wasn't begun by JFK, though he did popularize it. The thing that made it popular with men was that it was the first of the "dry looks." By the time the 1960's came around men were tired of putting Brylcreem like products in their hair. Then with the longer hair of the Beetles, the "dry look" really came into being and is still with us today. And it was just as common for women to have bouffant hairdo's like Jackie Kennedy. It was just the style of the time. We really don't have "styles" anymore. People don't try to look a certain way anymore, though a lot of women have been influenced by the Kardashians. Now days, anything goes.

Williams an egoist. He couldn’t accept that Dr Smith and the Robot were massively more popular and thus getting more money than he. “Guy” kinda like the “Guy” in Rosemary’s Baby.
Whatever. Williams was a realist. He knew that focusing on the antics of the robot and the campy Smith would compromise the quality of the scripts, and it did. Smith and the robot were popular with kids. The focus on them dropped the show’s ratings and affected their advertising rates. It lead to the show being unceremoniously dropped after three seasons. I don’t blame Williams for being annoyed.
@@skipeastport5529 I agree with you. Don't get me wrong, I loved Lost In Space very much. But they should have returned to the more serious adventure drama format similar to season one for longevity. Being aired opposite of the silly Batman television show forced the decision for Lost In Space to become the campy children's fantasy. Lost In Space was a multifaceted science fiction drama. Think back to some of the best episodes of the series. Follow the leader, The keeper, The reluctant stowaway, The anti-matter man, My friend Mr Nobody, Wish upon a star, War of the robots, Trip through the robot, Return from outer space, The derelict, Condemned of space, There were giants in the earth, Ghost in space, The astral traveler, Wreck of the robot, Invaders from the fifth dimension, Wish upon a star, Attack of the monster plants, The ghost planet and The cave of the wizards and many more. All good solid episodes for multiple reasons. Lost In Space had a quality cast of actors and good ratings. IMO Lost In Space honestly deserved a forth and fifth season at least. Reaching the Alpha Centauri system and/or returning to earth as heros would have been spectacular episodes for the series.
He had the ego that every lead actor has. He was sold a certain type of show and it became silly and embarrasing to him. He was worried about his career, and rightly so
@@gerrydooley951 When an Actor has true talent, he doesn't have to worry about typecasting or other mis-castings. The talent will overcome. This "Guy" had no talent, but thought he did.
@@llongdong I doubt we're going to agree but I'll give it one more shot: Guy Williams was a competent, lead, TV actor from the 1950's. He had screen presence and charisma and was believable in the roles he played. He probably didn't have a lot of range. There were dozens of them from the '50's, some of whom got lucky and got a series and built a career. That's what Williams was trying to do, build a career. That was being threatened by the direction LIS was taking. It wasn't about ego it was about survival in a fickle business. Was Williams ever going to play Hamlet? He'd be the first to tell you no.
