Was driving me nuts how Jabril basically said "the algorithm/ai is only a problem because someone is benefiting off of how its made so you should blame them and not the tool itself" and everyone kinda ignored it and then said "they should regulate it because the algorithm is dangerous" which is essentially both exactly what Jabril is saying while missing his point.

53:50 this reminds me of Hitchhiker's Guide, where the Nutrimatic machine produces a liquid everyone finds unpleasant that is "almost, but not quite, entirely unlike tea". Arthur Dent then dumps a bunch of info into the machine, including the history of the East India Company, and the the Nutrimatic co-opts the ship's main computer to help it work out how to make tea, leaving it unable to respond when the ship gets attacked.

I worked in the testing industry for many years. I worked with several US states to make science tests. What my company did was try to help the states come up with standards that were actually what students need to learn. A big part of it involved teaching AND testing critical thinking skills. It is possible to make great testing programs, so that if teachers do "teach to the test" they are teaching critical thinking and a great foundation in the sciences. Also, even back before 2000, states had sensitivity committees made up of teachers and community members. They reviewed each and every test question before kids ever saw them, and the sensitivity committee could veto any question. THEN they reviewed the data from field tests of the questions. It should be noted that science teachers from the states we contracted with also had their own committees to review the test items and then field test data as well. The vast majority of the teachers and administrators I worked with cared deeply about giving students a strong science foundation, and even more about teaching critical thinking. And by the way, the strongest predictor of performance on a test is socioeconomic status. There are many reasons for that: from poorer parents not having the time to make sure their kids are studying, to nutrition, to a million different things.
Anyway, if the standards are good and include scientific method and critical thinking, it is possible to make tests that are worth teaching to and will help as one tool in the education toolbox.

Your comment reminded me of the high school physics curriculum in my state of Australia. For roughly 15 years the curriculum avoided basically any complicated physics concepts and instead had a bunch of 2 page essay style questions like, "what was the impact of the transformer on rural Australia?", apparently this was done because teachers were complaining that real physics was too hard to teach. Luckily the curriculum changed the year I took it and instead focused on more maths, and combining different equations on the spot to fit a certain previously unseen problem. If I had done the previous curriculum I would have been in for a rude shock doing university physics. Curriculum design and the test that goes with it is so important.

30:28 My friends and i cracked the code on standardized testing in the mid 90's. we all realized that the standardized test has literally no impact on us as students at all (this was before NCLB). It was like a massive weight was lifted off our shoulders. It was a pointless test with NO SCORE and NO GRADE. We would have assembly after assembly with the staff literally chanting "DO YOUR BEST FOR THE TEST" to the point where its the only thing i remember about school now. When the day finally came for the test, my friends and i just scribbled all over the packet, drew on the page that said not to draw on it, and wrote in random answers. After it was over, we made it about a few hours before the teachers came and rounded us up. they were furious and kept grilling us on why we didn't take the test. i remember just asking them how many points the test was worth, and they just wouldn't answer my question. ultimately, they threw our tests out and made us swear not to tell any other students what we had done. i'm glad we saw through the bullshit as kids though, because the relief from all the stress was amazing.
And i made it as a engineer without EVER taking a single college placement test. No SAT, no ACT, NONE of that. Standardized testing can butt chug a gallon of Hot Ones brand name Last Dab hot sauce, with Pepper X.

For AI, Halo made a super interesting distinction in their books forever ago. There was VI, and there was AI. AI was anything that was essentially just a manmade consciousness. Free thought, everything. VI was just made to handle specific functions which would be stuff like modern AI, for the most part.

If you EVER attempted any sort of federal aid for school, signing up for Selective Service was mandatory. But it was also pretty easy, you basically just went to the website and type in your name and social security number and address I think. I know I did it in college freshman year.

There is still very little consensus on the definitions of Machine Learning and AI. It doesn't help that the two are often used interchangeably. I do academic work in machine learning and my current understanding is that machine learning is any process which can determine patterns in a set of input data which correlate with a certain output or outputs (which are either defined ahead of time or left for the algorithm to determine) without being told what those patterns are. AI though is fairly nebulous and the definition seems to change depending on what the person using it wants it to mean. ML is not necessarily AI, and AI is not necessarily ML.

In the AI discussion my take is that the program has a possibility of being incorrect. the tic tac toe analogy falls apart because the program already knows all the possible game states and there is no room for error, that is quite literally a flow chart. If a program starts by learning all the states and outcomes through trial and error and builds its own state table, I would say it AI at this point in time, I think it stops being AI when it can stop improvement.

The definition of AI is very vague, but basically, just like Kevin said, a simple state machine is just a program. It's an actor, to be more precise.
The "Intelligence" part of AI requires the program to not be specialized. The program must be able to learn, and apply general principles to unknown tasks.
A TicTacToe "AI" is per definition not an AI, it is just an agent that "chooses" the correct action based on a ruleset, which is usually implemented using a state machine, which you guys explained well.
But like Jabrils correctly mentioned, a neural network is just one possible implementation of AI. You could theoretically write an algorithm that is able to apply knowledge to new situations.
The most important aspect of AI is the ability to _solve problems,_ meaning not just doing something the programmer told it to do, but making decisions.
Because of this definition, there is no hard difference between a program and an AI, it is more of a spectrum, and we need to draw the line somewhere. So none of you were "wrong" in the end. It is not really something you can clearly define, and I mean it's just a word. Who cares what it means, as long as we know what we're talking about.
Because a neural network is also just a function that takes an input and produces an output, it just lends itself to machine learning, because you can adjust weights and biases by back-propagating errors.
I would say, "AI" is a topic, and not a thing. Just saying "this is AI" sadly doesn't mean much, since the word is kinda open to interpretation.

So, I have the same issue with a screaming roommate, and I thought about earbuds, but my problem is not waking up to my alarm then. So, any clever ideas a clever person would care to grace me with?

I wish I'd just plowed on and done a foundation chem degree straight after school instead of assuming I'd never make the grade because I didn't have chemistry Alevels.
I was top in my class for science but I got a bit lower in my maths score. So as a result I wasn't allowed to do science A-levels (high school diploma for US) and had to do crappy humanities subjects (they were my second best group of subjects behind science). So then after my A-levels, 2020, COVID pandemic, all my travel plans for my gap year went to shit. Instead of applying to university I put it off because I didn't have any motivation to do the subjects, so I just dumped all my dreams and went to work in a shitty IT job in a school, thinking maybe in a few decades I'd be in a top paid it job...about a month in I realized that wasn't going to happen but plowed on for a year doing that. While working I forgot to apply for university AGAIN because of the stress of work, and added stress because my girlfriend was getting distant (turned out she was seeing another person).
So now here I am, two years late for university, my girlfriend broke up with me a week ago. I've applied for university and I'm going to go, but I've never felt more unsure of anything in my life. Nothing makes sense anymore without her. I've lost everything, all my plans for after and during university, everything is gone.

Yeah, No Child Left Behind reaaaaaally fucked up the way stuff was taught. Since funding was all based on attendance and test scores, suddenly it's less about caring about the student's outcome, and just whether or not they're there and can take a very specific set of tests well. I was lucky because my school had enough outside funding to be able to pay for teachers who could provide a more liberal education (mind you, not in the political sense, in the education sense, look it up lol) where I got to learn more than just the curriculum. And that set me up so much for college in terms of just base skill level, since I knew way more shit than other students, like how to write a thesis statement and what not. Unfortunately, I went to a public university, despite the fact that my parents could afford a private one, and so I ended up getting kicked out (and let back in) due to medical reasons, leaving, doing some cc to transfer to a different college, and ended up leaving that too. Now I'm like, where do I try to go, how, should I try to get an internship and work in the field I'm pursuing, all that shit. And I still have some of the medical problems, so I'm hesitant to jump until I get my shit together. Funny thing about a lot of the UA-camrs I watch, most of them are fairly smart or talented people, and they've helped justify that like, if you have problems in college, or don't like it, it's not because you're stupid or untalented. It just means shit happens, and you gotta figure it out, whether it's get back on the old horse, or get on a new one (and thankfully none of them suggest becoming a UA-camr lol, kids these days are fucked thinking they'll be UA-camrs or TikTok stars lol).
