  • TAMIL - Parishechanam demonstration and explanation by Nurani Arunachalam (Arun Hariharan).
Parishechanam procedure steps are given below:
Parishechanam is done to purify the food that we eat. Parishechanam must be done by every man or boy with Yagnopaveetham, before taking food. The procedure for Parishechanam is explained in this video:
    1. Parishechanam must be done after all the first course food items have been served on your banana-leaf or plate. Wait till everything has been served. Do NOT touch the food or start eating yet. A little rice with a few drops of ghee on it must be served, along with the other items.
    2. After all items have been served, take a little water in your right hand and circle it once clockwise around your leaf or plate, chanting "Om bhoor bhuva suva"
    3. Take a little water again in your right hand and sprinkle it on the food, chanting: "Tat Savitur Varenyam Bhargo Devasya Dhimahi Dhiyoyonah Prachodayat"
    4. Take a little water again in your right hand and circle it twice clockwise around the food, chanting "Deva Savita Prasuva; Satyam Tvartena Parishinchami" (during the day) OR, if it is night, chant "Deva Savita Prasuva; Ritantva Satyena Parishinchami"
    5. Take a little water again in your right hand and let it flow along the base of your palm and into your mouth, chanting, “Amrita Upastaranam Asi”
    6. With the ring finger of your left hand, touch the edge of the leaf or plate. Take a few grains of rice mixed with ghee with the thumb, middle and ring fingers of the right hand, put them into your mouth and swallow them without chewing. This should be done 6 times, chanting the following Mantras one by one:
    a. Om Pranaya Swaha
    b. Om Apanaya Swaha
    c. Om Vyanaya Swaha
    d. Om Udanaya Swaha
    e. Om Samanaya Swaha
    f. Om Brahmane Swaha
    7. With the ring finger of your left hand, touch the water drops which have fallen on the ground while you circled it around your leaf or plate earlier, and touch it to your chest, chanting “Brahmanima Atma Amritatwaaya. Madhye Madhye Amrita Paniyam Samarpayami”. Then start eating.
    8. After finishing the meal, drink water if required, and then take a little water in your right hand and let it flow along the base of your palm and into your mouth, chanting, “Amrita Apidhanam Asi”. You must NOT eat anything or drink water again, immediately after this. If you need to drink water, drink it before you chant “Amrita Apidhanam Asi”.
I hope you will find this video useful to learn and perform Parishechanam. Hari Om.
