    I like your ingenuity. Had not thought of welding of a solid piece of steel rod (after shaped better, with additional tool work)-a lot easier then trying to worked with half rotted posts and replacement plastic parts. I may try this in either fall or spring. Having same issues. I have the exact same truck model, crew cab (but no longer factory ;)

    Your tailgate itself is in great condition and never rusted?? Wow! Dope video thanks!

      I know! Right? Who would have guessed that the tailgate would be okay but the hinge pins would rust away to nothing? Anyway, It was well worth the time to repair it. Thanks so much for the props, and thanks for watching!

    I wonder if I could use the screw on replacement knobs you can buy on Amazon on my truck. Because the original knobs were welded on

      I don’t know. I’ve never used those. I would think that as long as you have access to wherever you’d drill the holes, you could do it, but my fear would be that the metal around the tailgate isn’t thick enough to screw into securely long term. I would probably want to device a way add fat washers and bolt through with nuts on the back. Also I’d make sure to paint any holes drilled to help prevent rust. Good luck if you try it!

      I think that keeping up with issues like these is what keep an old vehicle from really feeling like and old vehicle. Once stuff is held on with duct tape you know it's only a matter of time before you say bye bye! Thanks for watching and thanks for commenting!

    anyone know how to take the hinges off a 2015 tailgate? trying to fit a new tailgate to my 07 sierra but hinges dont match up... bolts are seized on truck side(if i need to ill drill them out but looking for a easier method first.) I don't see any obvious way to take the hinge of the 2015 tailgate.

    • @ClayCarlino
      @ClayCarlino  2 роки тому +1

      I never had a sierra, so I don’t know how similar it is to a Dakota, but in general when I run into seizes bolts I go through a process that seems to work a good 85% of the time. First I spray the bolts with penetrating oil. PB Blaster is really good. Liquid wrench is good. WD-40 even or something similar. Let it sit. Go back and reapply every hour or so. Let it sit overnight then check again in the morning. If you can reach the bolts with an impact driver, that’s best, as the driver is especially good breaking stuck bolts loose without stripping the heads.
      Of course as you try stuff, continue with the penetrating oil. If you can allow the process to continue over a couple days, that’s even better.
      If you can’t get an impact driver on the bolts a breaker bar is the next choice. When using the bar use short motions back a forth to see if you can break the bolt loose rather than just giving it a massive pull. If you get the bolt to move, add more penetrating oil and continue to use the breaker bar to turn the bolt back and forth slowly increasing the amount of motion as you go until you can get full rotations. Even then, turn it back and forth every now and then to ensure the bolt doesn’t get stuck and break.
      The last thing I usually try is applying heat. If the oil doesn’t do it, you can try using a propane or map gas torch to heat the bolts until cherry red, then get an impact wrench or breaker bar on the bolt and see if it will budge. Sometimes hitting the bolt with a hammer can help, but be careful not to deform the head to where you can’t get a socket on it. The heat option sucks because it burns away the paint and will catch all the oil on fire! Be ready to put out flames and make sure nothing surrounding catches on fire (including yourself!)
      Getting stuck bolts loose is the biggest problem a backyard mechanic faces. They turn short afternoon jobs into all day frustration-fests filled with pain and swearing! And at the end of it all, like you said in your comment, you may still end up just drilling the bolts out.
      Good luck! I hope you get the bolts loose! Thanks for watching and thanks for commenting!

    Well I don't have a welder so I will have to pay someone to do it.

    • @ClayCarlino
      @ClayCarlino  4 роки тому

      That's a shame. Obviously when you already have work that HAS to be fixed, that's rarely an ideal time to learn a new skill, but if you're not in an emergency, and you have time to practice and get used to using the machine, then I'll just say that the Harbor Freight flux wire welder costs about $120.00. You will probably pay at least that much to have someone else weld it for you. That being said, I COMPLETELY understand if you don't want to do that. Good luck! Hope everything works out whatever you choose!

      Clay Carlino I saw another video where you can buy hinges and the studs at a Auto Parts store. You just remove 8 screws. Well getting some of the bolt like screws out was a bit of a job but other than that it wasn’t bad. Parts cost 25 bucks. Was a little cheaper on Amazon but I wanted them right away. The metal on my tailgate and truck don’t look to bad. By the time the rust gets to bad now I figure my truck will be much older anyway. Worry about that latter.

    • @ClayCarlino
      @ClayCarlino  4 роки тому

      @@What_Fred_Said nice job! I'm suprised about buying replacement hinges. I scoured the internet for something made for my make and model truck. I couldn't find anything. I remember seeing ones for Ram and Silverado but never any for my 2000 Dodge Dakota. But if you had better luck, that's awesome! I openly admit that I'm not the best at finding what I want on-line, so maybe I just stink at finding parts sometimes.
      Anyway, good job! If you happened to post pics or videos of your repair, feel free to post a link here. I would love to see it and I'm sure others would too! Thanks for commenting!

      @@ClayCarlino What do you think about using a stubby bolt? I'm thinking I could use a hex head bolt since it has a mostly rounded outside, and I wouldn't have to weld it. Just drill a hole, put fender washers on either side, tighten and you're done! I have a 99 Dakota with this exact problem.
