Chordplay - The Chords Of Slayer

- Here's the next episode of Chordplay with The Chords Of Slayer. I've had a number of requests to feature some of Slayer's dark and moody chord-based riffs and progression, and while this lesson takes a look at a number of classic Slayer anthems, we're also talking about locating/using dissonant intervals, intervallic classification/structure, and how you can go about tapping into some of these sounds in your music.
The chord-based examples in this lesson revolve around a number of sinister-sounding tracks in Slayer's back catalog, including famous songs such as 'Seasons In The Abyss,' 'South Of Heaven,' and more, but we're also hitting some lesser-known fan favorites, such as 'Live Undead,' 'Blood Red,' '213,' 'Spill The Blood,' and much more!
This is one of the longer lessons that I've put together on this channel, but since this is the first time we've looked at Slayer and we're also diving deeper into understanding and using dissonant intervals - there's a lot hiding in this lesson.
Give this episode a view, leave some comments/feedback, and please subscribe to Late Night Lessons - THANK YOU!
When I was 13 I had a copy of "Seasons" on cassette. One day while on the bus ride to school a kid asked what I was listening to. I'll never forget the look on his face when he put my headphones on. Sheer terror. He never asked what I was listening to ever again and I've never stopped listening to Slayer since. I'm thankful to have seen them live a couple of time before they disbanded. Great lesson Dave.
My friends and I have been calling parallel Perfect Fourth harmonies "Slayer Harmonies" for years!
Great job on Slayer's chords......Thanks for Lesson
The Brewster's getting down and dirty tonight! Hell yeah, I love it!
Great lesson David. Your video took me back to 1993. I was a young budding guitarist of 14. I remember sitting in the waiting room of the orthodontist office listening to Seasons in the Abyss on tape though my Walkman. Lol !!! Keep up the great lessons.
The sounds and tones he gets from this affordable amp is hallucinating....
Us tone chasers could take notes...
What Amp does he use?
@@heisenbooger Solid state for sure...Bugera I guess
Behringer V-Amp Pro
I was lucky enough to see one of the Week in the Abyss shows, they played 8 bars in 8 nights on the east coast prior to the Seasons tour, all announced the day of. I was driving back from skating at Lansdowne and on the radio - "Slayer One Night Only at Hammerjacks in Baltimore". Full concert rig - so f****** loud, so great
213 is probably my favorite Slayer song . Unpopular opinion Devine Intervention is probably my favorite Slayer album . Serenity In Murder is Shredtastic thrash metal. It may be blasphemy but the slower tempos and the groove on Devine Intervention is what got me in to Slayer . Yep I’m definitely more of a casual Slayer fan too .
Completely agree--I think Devine Intervention is the peak of their craft, even without Dave Lombardo (who is my favorite drummer).
Divine intervention I think is their best over all album . Clever songwriting, songs sound unique to each other , variety, and it’s almost catchy death metal . Definitely their peak
Thank you as always, Dave! Have been hanging out for this episode!!!
👍👍👍👍👍
Hi David, That lead singer used to give me the willies and that evil smile. He would've been a good horror movie actor. I always wondered how they made their music sound so evil. Good stuff David. Peace.
The perfect Halloween lesson! Seasons was my favorite album. I'm not a gigantic fan either. But I must admit they were unique. Very powerful sounding band. Lots of great guitar parts.
Perfect Halloween week October Choice, David! Thanks!!!!!!
What a great way to introduce dissonance on the guitar. Once again my favorite guitar sounds great tonight.
best lessons on the tube, you’ve taught me so much thank you Dave!
Wow I can’t wait to dissect this stuff!
I saw them in 86…touring on Rain in Blood. In the front row. It was actually terrifying.
One of my favourite Slayer tracks is, seasons of the abyss.
It's not break neck speed, but it's so heavy!!
It's got everything in it, weight, dissonance and lyrically, it's a killer!!
Dave. Nice one. Now you need to do one on King Diamond. Andy and Mike. Awesome guitar slaying duo. Happy Halloween.
Hey search around on this channel and you find a King Diamond Chordplay lesson and also an Andy/Michael Three-For-All licks lesson.
Rock on! \m/
The Mercyful Fate inspiration def comes through in their chords. It’d be awesome to see a Chordplay ep on them. Cheers Dave!
Yeah David the Mercyful Fate.
Hell yeah, "don't break the oath". It's a dangerous meeting...
Their album Hell Awaits is really the only 1 that resembles Mercyful Fate... The rest is all their own, you know, speed, aggression, VIOLENCE kinda stuff...
There’s an episode done up by Dave on King Diamond, aren’t they one in the same?
There are lots of Black Sabbath in Slayer's evil sound.
@Life Is Peachy, and what is your point?
David Brewster you are so good!
Kerry King is probably watching this to learn what he was actually playing
SLAYEERRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!
Excellent video of under rated song writers🤘🏻
SLAYEERRRRRR!!!!
Huntington Park not Hb
South Central LA
Translate to English
all those evil dissonant notes make me want to sacrifice a pack of gummi bears in the name of Satan
"Desire" from Diabolus In Musica is another great dark evil tune with arpeggios and disonant intervals
“He was alot shorter than I thought he’d be” 😂 Glen Danzig has entered the chat…
I was thinking that too - Glen, Mike Muir, Henry Rollins - those guys are kind of short too though. Paul Gilbert, Greg Koch, Josh Scott (JHS) are all around Davids height. I think Greg Koch is like 6'7" or something. All those guys could play on a really crappy basketball team, I'm sure Danzig could set a mean post.
Seasons is my all time the shows were insane. Dave perfect guitar player Respect. Side note what was the spill the bood shirt i had back in the day I was the only one who had it dude on front with a robe hood spill the blood lyrics on back
The Chords of Pen Rollings, the early punk rock and math rock riffmaster - guitarist from Honor Role / Butterglove / Breadwinner / Loincloth (4 song demo only)?
Pen Rollings also played drums in Ladyfinger and contributed drum work to an obscure, fairly recent project called Bowl Ethereal.... (say it out loud for a laugh!)...
They formed in Huntington Park, near East LA, not Huntington Beach, which is in Orange County.
My bad! Thanks!
: )
@@LateNightLessons sorry I didn't read this Dave and I commented already
I enjoyed the lesson David ! But I couldn't help but laugh when you mentioned you towered over Kerry King ! I didn't know your 6' 4'' ! HA HA HA.I met Gary Holt two years ago at Heavy MTL I like Gary's style n playing. Bay Area Thrash Metal!
Slayer on a Vela. Well done sir. 😏
King was goood. Seasons, reminds me of: “ _What is this that stands before me… Figure in black that points at me…_ “
Dude, why is everyone using that brand of guitar? Seems like that’s all I see! Are they really good or something? :)
Not here brother.
@@Scottocaster6668 Yeah it seems like everywhere I look, commercials, guys in tutorials, you know? Seems like all I see are PRS guitars.
I have an ESP Les Paul but was recently checking out a Schechter Apocalypse and holy shit, that’s a fast neck! Totally not used to it. …Shit, I’m not even used to this Les Paul one. I’ve been using Ibanez my whole life. Take care, bro.
@@sergedenovo2389 I have a Ibanez Jem Jr, 2 strats, a '02 Korean Wolfgang, and now I'm also looking for a shecter. Jeff Loomis has a black strat type that looks Awesome. Not sure what kind, but yeah, I see PRS's everywhere. Must be the in thing but not for me.
Be safe brother, have a great weekend!
I love your show and I hate I have to common to correct you but Slayer started in" Huntington Park" and South Gate. Not Huntington Beach which is nowhere remotely near there. Your show is awesome.sign Fabian Dead.
Mr brewster can you do chordplay stratovarius
What looper are you using? I think I heard you say the dc one? Is that the Boss red one?
I think he said tc electronics
@@stevebakunas4821 Yeah dude, thanks. I found it on Amazon.
Huntington Park, California not Huntington Beach, California. 🤘
i collect picks and want to see what you have in that frame.
Is the Vela a good fit for metal?
I didn’t like Slayer’s image back in 83/84 but the music was definitely intense evil sounding lots of dissonance but great playing Lombardo’s drums Hanneman King’s attack and Araya’s high screams the lyrics were certainly interesting and controversial early fav’s Aggressive Perfector and Chemical Warfare!!!!
Jesus, 6'4''.....? This camera doesn't seem to capture that. I assumed you were a shorter guy with the gift of large hands....
I would have never guessed 6'4"
😎👍
I was hoping for Angel of Death, but maybe you skipped it because it's been done before. Reign in Blood was the album that yanked me in.
do you have an email i could send you a riff to check out?
when jeff died slayer live died...
Wow, 6 foot 4. Tall guy, big hands, long fingers. Okay, height tells nothing about modesty(yes, you are). Thanks for the Slayer insights.
Great stuff. Jeff and Kerry know/knew what they are/were doing. Riff gods. Soloing, too. Yep, they know.
Great work, but always funny when people dissect Slayer´s guitar work!
You: "Interesting, an implied flat six, flat nine, sus 4 G minor chord"
Hanneman and King: "Hey dude, listen to this" - "Naaaaa smug, sounds like crap" - "Ok mf, how about this?" - "Yeah bro, cool af, some heavy shit" :D :D
That magic Slayer word - Dissonance. Glad to hear it so early in the video.
Good stuff! Might be obscure, but I think a lesson on classic Voivod would be interesting. Thanks for what you do!
I LOVE Voivod!!!! Piggy and the band were so unique and fearless!!!! Piggy RIP! Chewie kicks ass, too, though!
Darkthrone drummer Fenriz described Slayer, when they first came out, as a "Black Metal" version of Iron Maiden ("Cryonics" waa a mentioned example), including simple face paint. I forgot about that.
My daughter is 15 and she loves your channel. She's learned so many of her favorite tunes from you. This morning she asked why there's no tutorial on UA-cam for any Gruntruck tunes. I told her we should ask you to do one. She wants to learn Machine Action but isn't proficient at working things out on her own yet. Maybe there's more Gruntruck fans out there than we know! Cheers and thanks for the killer lessons.
Are you saying GrandFunk?
@@amyhurley4461 Nope! Gruntruck (actually from Seattle!) was a Grunge era band that mixed in a lot more Metal than their contemporaries. My years loved their cd "Push" from the moment I heard it and it still holds up to this day. Check it out!
Awesome lesson Dave! As a musician your ear can tell that Slayer uses an overabundance of Augmented 4th intervals and hints of Locrian in their music. I feel they are masters of dissonance and just an overall awesome band. Got to see them on their South of Heaven tour in San Antonio, TX when I was in high school and again in Austin, TX several years ago. Slayer is one band I will never forget seeing.
Well said! I love the way Slayer makes their ugly and dissonant chordplay still very musical and somehow melodic! Plus I love their classic parallel Perfect Fourth "Slayer Harmonies."
@@amyhurley4461 No raining blood at both shows. I'm guessing Texas is too conservative to allow such gore at concert venues. However, throwing mud at concert goers and bands during a rainy afternoon at Lalapalooza in Austin, TX several years ago was ok?
great job, great timing with Halloween looming, you surely enjoyed this episode. I heard 'Seasons' early on (there were hints), and I knew it was to later poke it's head out,, that clean part of the intro, dissonance and the layered, inter-laced guitar lines, great job!
"we're gonna be safe"..... Haha 😂.... Last words or something like that.... Sounded like a horror film line.... We arent talking about the lyrics... We're saaa... Aaaahhhhhhhh.!, ☠️
Fantastic video David. Slayer was a huge influence on me as a young player. I had no idea what they were doing but as you said it just sounds so evil. One thing I'd love to hear is when you say the chords are implied it would be cool if you could strum the full implied chords in the rhythm of the riff so we can hear what that would sound like. Love your videos man!
This is awesome. Thanks for a great lesson👍👏
Really strange, I hadn't listened to Slayer in while and put on South of Heaven couple days ago. Was thinking I needed to learn some of the songs of it. Great content as always.
How about a Venom chord play; October is almost over.
Great stuff, Dave! - Saw Slayer in Poperinge, Belgium in '85. Their first gig on European soil. I guess "changed my life" sounds a little exaggerated, but hell yes, it did! :-)
SLAYER !!! Thank you so much. I really appreciate it that you follow up on requests (I did this request this too). Totally agree with you on the dissonant chords / dark mood. This band wrote some amazing songs and brought it live too. I was hooked as from Show no mercy in 1983 and still listen to them on a daily basis.
Played Slayer covers for years,. Rule #1 if you don't crush it.... the fans may crush you!
Great lesson as always Dave!
Excellent!!!
Wonder if you could do a video on Rik Emmett from Triumph??? Keep’em coming!!!!
Unexpected but very welcomed!
Great episode, I didn't notice some details you highlight here, thanks for that. Very inspirational.
David's PSAs -- "Don't carve yourself up this Halloween" :)
Nice lesson Dave.
Great lesson David - thanks! What about a Ron Jarzombek / Spastic Ink / Watchtower lesson?
Hell yeah!!!! And a Billy White / Watchtower lesson!!!! I love Watchtower!
@@voronOsphere Watchtower is incredible! One of the greatest ever progressive metal bands.
@@bingefeller .....and one of the earliest!
@@voronOsphere maybe the first "modern" prog metal band! Watchtower's influence was absolutely massive.
This lesson was totally unexpected for me. Much appreciated. Keep surprising us David and thank you for the lesson.
If Dave was my teacher I would have never missed a class...🤟😝🤟🇵🇷
I’d be a much better player!
I claim him as my de facto teacher and never miss a vid :)
very very very very very very very very happy with this content
Thank you!
I have been praying (no irony detected with that) for a lesson/dissection of Slayer, giving names to the harmony so I can explain it to my non-guitar player friends.
One for the books sir
Voivod please!!!
Wow i've been trying to figure this out for years and you finally explained it! THANKS!!
killer video
Cool! That riff from Bloodline reminds me of Carmina Burana by Carl Orff. Never thought of that.
Slayer=Dissonance=Late Night Lessons 👏👍🤘👈
Chords? Slayer chords?
Reign in Blood and Angel of Death are my 2 favorite tunes. They really get the adrenaline going for me. Angel of Death's lyrics are genius.
"Reign in Blood" is the perfect 39 minute Thrash Album! Every tune is brilliant and the flow from song to song couldn't be better!
lol its a great song but how are the lyrics "genius"?
Oh yea!! Can't wait to watch this
Excellent video .... excellent subject to do a video on! :)
Could you do pantera or Alice In Chains?
Hey! Search around on the channel and you'll find lessons for both Pantera (and Dimebag) and Alice In Chains on this channel! Rock on!
\m/
Awesome
Love Slayer. The first time I heard chemical warfare in the early 80’s I was hooked. Been listening to them for over 35 years. Great job breaking down the songs.......as usual.
How about a chord play of Helloween for Halloween.
Hey! Be sure to search for Helloween on this channel, as I featured them last year during Metal Month!
\m/ ROCK ON \m/
Great video Dave and Great to hear some old seasons in the abyss tunes coming through . The two guitarists really complimented each other well and Rick Rubin ..well what more can be said? Have you done any Andy Timmons or Jake E Lee stuff yet ? Keep on Rocking friend
Hey! Be sure to search around on the channel, as there's a few Jake E. Lee lessons and some Andy Timmons too - with more on the way!
Thanks and rock on!
It's funny that you played South of Heaven first and that's exactly what I wanted trying to see because the chords sound extra chunky. However, right after I watched how you played it, I went and found a live performance of it and they are definitely not playing it like this. The chords part, I mean. The video I watched was titled:
Slayer - South Of Heaven (The Big 4 Tour) [5.1 Surround / 4K Remastered]
Deep purple and Sabbath were NOT the early days of heavy metal
Hey dude badass you're playing SLAYER but you're skipping parts and that's disrespect to Slayer man but nonetheless Slayer homie 🤘💀🤘
Of course I’ll be the 666th like 🤘
I love how this channel can go from Journey to friggin' Slayer. It's brilliant and learning the snippets you teach from each band has made me ten times the guitar player i was before discovering you.
My English is bad,why write in German(I 'm from Germany ).
Als Ich im Nov 1990 zum ersten Slayers "Live Undead" hörte dachte Ich mit offenem Mund nur:Wie zum Teufel kann nur jemand so schnell Guitare spielen!!!!!
Since 1990 Slayer Fan!!!Slayer Fan Forever!!!
I got tendinitis from burning and haven’t been able to play for a month. Slayer wasn’t what I was planning to learn for a new personal lessons, but this was fun to watch.
The Slayer interval aka the tritone aka raised 4th aka flat 5 aka Diabolus in Musica… cool lesson!
You have the most unique channel on UA-cam..Keep up the great work and keep inspiring us Sir
Wow... do you think for a second that jeff or kerry cared?
BTW I love Late Night Lessons!!!!
Dude a buddy of mine was at a Slayer concert and a lot of people had those spiky bands on and- you know how people slam their fists in the air - people were getting hit in the back of the head with those and bleeding, man! …But everyone was so fd up, that nobody cared! …good times back then. Now we have jabs… Crazy! …How far we came!
Are you processing your sound, dude! Or is that just the ax and the amp? Sounds really good.
