  • Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire is about to drop in theaters this Friday, and a lot of people are comparing it to the Academy Award Winning Godzilla Minus One. Godzilla is a long franchise with a lot of silly monsters. But while some might criticize the silliness, I say....EMBRACE the goofiness.

The cognitive dissonance of Godzilla fandom is having people on one side lauding Minus One and deriding the Legendary movies as brainless popcorn fodder for babies, while on the other side, you have other people just as stridently claiming that Godzilla is Not That Serious and demanding we keep politics out of their big stompy monster movies, as if both aspects haven't been baked into the premise since the very beginning.

On that note, a Godzilla vs kong film can also be hella political. Godzilla symbolizes Mankind's horrific, ludicrous destructive power, not just Nukes, but general warfare and the Military Industrial complex as well. Kong is the innocent being exploited. Therefore, you can have a visceral, savage kaiju film that ostensibly looks like a generic Kaiju fight schlock but go heavy on the symbolism(e.g the human characters capture kong, forcefully conscript him, basically, have him fight Godzilla who is the bi product of Nuclear testing which the Military industrial complex invested in) and, instead of the fight being a heroic back and forth, Have Godzilla absolutely demolish and humilate kong to symbolize how the Military industrial complex throws the innocent to the met grinder nd how the weapons it produces violently tears the conscripted apart in wartime.

Seriously, Godzilla is one of those characters that can be used in several different roles.
If the movie needs an allegory for Nuclear Holocaust, Godzilla can be that.
If it needs a fire-breathing villainous vertebrate, Godzilla can be that.
If it needs a former villain slowly becoming a hero, Godzilla can be that.
If it needs a prototype Captain Planet, Godzilla can be that.
If it needs a giant monster version of Mr. Mom, Godzilla can be that.
He’s a character that has a career that most real life actors would KILL for!
He’s allowed to fluctuate between Humorous and Horrifying…and there’s NOTHING WRONG WITH THAT.

To my memory, I was first introduced to Godzilla all the way back in 2014. Before then, I loved (and still love) dinosaurs. Any movie that had a dinosaur in it, good or bad, I watched. One day, me and my dad were scrolling through movies on tv to watch and that’s when I saw it. The poster for Godzilla 2014. I immediately wanted to watch it just from the sight of the poster alone, and I did. And I was blown away by it. I instantly became drawn to Godzilla. I loved seeing him fight the Muto’s on screen. Not long after, I then watched the 1998 Godzilla movie. My moms dad had a bunch of movies he let us have, and one of them was that. So I watched it and was immediately…..confused. I had only seen two Godzilla movies at this point and didn’t know anything about the other movies, so I thought this movie was a sequel to Godzilla 2014. I didn’t like how Godzilla laid eggs, I didn’t like how he couldn’t breathe atomic breath, and I didn’t like how he was killed by missiles lol. But later on as the years went by, I began learning more and more about Godzilla. And I eventually started watching the Japanese movies, specifically Godzilla Final Wars, Godzilla Vs Mechagodzilla 2 and Ghidorah: The Three Headed Monster. I also watched the rest of the Monsterverse too but I was always more interested in the Japanese Godzilla movies. And ever since then, the big G us really left quite an impact on me.

There's this hour and half video essay I watched a few years ago by a youtuber who's a hardcore Godzilla fan himself, and it was about how the nostalgia for the Showa era, as well as bad English dubs and product placements, was what ruined Godzilla from being taken seriously by the masses, which was why he hated the later Monsterverse films after 2014. He left youtube though, so I doubt he'll ever get any problem responses from other Godzilla fans disagreeing with him.

The original Godzilla movie was a Nuclear Apocalypse allegory about the destruction of man, but it was also about a man in a costume smashing a model city. It is a narrative dichotomy whose flexibility allows it to be a big monster bash about kaiju's dropkicking each other, and a serious political satire about PTSD and government inaction.

The thing that I love so much about the Legendary series is the passion it clearly has for the entirety of the franchise.
Gareth Edwards 2014 film is still the best to me but as great as it was seeing the gravity of humanity being humbled by nature and circumstances beyond their control, he still characterized Godzilla with grumpy old man motions swatting mortars like mosquitoes so he could shamble back to bed.
That acknowledgement of the franchise's entirety from the start has helped the shift to Showa-esque camp of the Godzilla & Kong features feel not only palatable but frankly, welcome after how grim and lifeless King of The Monsters' mid-Heisei self seriousness felt.
It's been a beautiful marriage of all eras of Godzilla and as much as I love Minus One, the variety has been what's really keeping this franchise cooking.
New Empire and vs. Kong get to be silly because Shin and Minus One are dramatic. The push to make them all homogeneous to a single tone is antithetical to the Renaissance Godzilla is currently in.

OK, here is my major issue with your argument.
"GvK and GxK were goofy because Shin and -0.1 were dark."
First, the Anime Trilogy and Singular Point are clearly forgotten by the fanbase and now that -0.1 is out people are acting as if Toho can all of a sudden do no wrong.
Second, you acknowledged how the MV started, then you misreoresented KOTM as depressing yet also acknowledged the similarities with the Heisei era, and then you said that it's OK for an ongoing continuity with limited copyright access to tge classic monsters to tonally shift and abandon its previous narratives because a bunch of movies continuity independent from one another tgat came oit after the MV already began from a company with access to a ginormous roster of wacky characters decided to have the same tone.
Out of the 2 companies I described, which one would make more sense to focus on a more serious multi-movie narrative and which one to experiment with wackier scenarios and characters?

      @@KingGoji-m1r3 Except it makes sense.
      I pointed out 2 things:
      1. People are hypocritically not taking Singular Point and the Anime Trilogy into consideration when talking about the direction Toho should take with the franchise, as in they ignore recent Toho installments that have been controversial because they took themselves way too seriously and did not utilize Toho's wacky cast of kaiju.
      2. I specified why it would be better if Legendary was doing the mostly serious movies, all the while Toho was doing the wackier movies.
Legendary has limited access to Toho's wacky cast of kaiju due to copyright limitations. Legendary also started first their era of Godzilla and for a good while were going consistently with tones and themes.
Toho started the Reiwa era after Legendary started the Monsterverse. Reiwa and Monsterverse were already tonally different from each other, but if you wanted them to be more different, you'd think that Reiwa changing its tone would be the more logical direction because the Monsterverse started first and the Monsterverse has more continuity amongst its installments, whereas the Reiwa consists of FOUR REBOOTS all tonally similar to each other. Plus, Toho has access to theor big cast of wacky kaiju that coukd be used for silly fun stories. Heck, a major critisism of Reiwa is that they are not using their huge cast of monsters.
Now are my points clear are minor spelling mistakes you might spot too distracting for you?

I was a kid who loved dinosaurs, and seeing them depicted in such an exagerated over-the-top manner was very entertaining. Anguirus is my all time favourite monster, an ankylosaurus being depicted as this vicious and agressive ball of spikes is super fun.
Personally, I like the campy godzilla films and the serious ones as well, bur can't stand the Legendary Pictures movies. For me they completely fail in towing the line between serious and goofy. The human plots are actively aggravating to watch and take up the vast majority of the film.

My issues with this topic goes far beyond just the Godzilla fandom and criticism around it. This is an issue that pervades entertainment discourse in general. What it is, is this: People still have a hard time suspending disbelief as well not knowing how to separate personal preference from actual criticism.
For some reason, a dark, scary, and "grounded" movie about a giant atomic lizard destroying cities is fine and easy to suspend disbelief for. But as soon as a filmmaker leans into the inherent fantasy and outlandishness the concept of a giant atomic city destroying lizard movie provides, suddenly it's "stupid" and "silly" and "illogical."
I absolutely HATE the mindset that even actual fans display of calling things like this "stupid" just because they earnestly embrace pure fantasy. It's this obsession with creating a detached, ironic cynicism around the media you consume that has pervaded art discussion for YEARS now.
This attitude creates an automatic barrier for the viewer where they put themselves on a pedestal and see themselves as "above" the material instead of just taking it on its own terms.
If your mentality about this kind of stuff is that its inherently "stupid" then why are you bothering to engage in it at all if you have that much baseline contempt for it?
Let me explain: Saying a film like GxK is bad because it's "silly, stupid, and illogical" isn't an actual criticism. You just don't personally click with the films tone and style. And that's FINE! No shit a movie where giant lizards and apes fight in zero gravity in the Hollow Earth is "illogical." Fuckin' duh. Stop applying outside logic to the world of a film with its own set of logic and rules.
A REAL criticism of GxK is something like this: "Sometimes the narrative is so fast that it takes contrived storytelling shortcuts to keep the plot moving forward."
See the difference? One is just preference-as-criticism. The other is actually evaluating the material on its own terms.
So when someone criticizes a film like GxK for being "silly and illogical" they aren't actually criticizing the storytelling and filmmaking and the work itself - but equating their personal dislike of tone with criticism. People need to start understanding the basic concepts of how to engage with and criticize media, because shit is dire out there.
Ya'll need to ask yourself this: Is a film stupid and illogical because you just don't, in your subjective taste, click with its story and tone? Or does the FILM ITSELF do a poor job of conveying it's story and ideas in your SUBJECTIVE opinion? Look at a film and suss out what it's trying to accomplish and judge it off of that - not what you THINK it should be or should have done.

Oh god, your analysis is really really nice! I'm saddened it doesn't have more views because I adore the way you drive your different points across and the multiple angles that Goji as well as other kaiju can have!
Tokusatsu is a genre born from tragedy and wanting to make sense of it via cinema. What some people don't seem to grasp is that facing the different events humanity has faced doesn't have just one way.
Comedy, sorrow, positivity, violence. All of them are ways in which a human being can endure/face those situations, and all of them are acceptable in their own way.
Goji has had many different influences and styles in movies and now even in web series. None is necessarily better or worse except on the execution of their own premise.
I have always loved the meaning behind each kaiju, and well, seeing them fight is really fun. Rooting for giant monsters is fun. And that's alright. Silliness is so necessary jahdjf, it really has helped to humanize and make the 'monster' likeable. That's why even after the horror that he represents in the first movie, Goji continues being a cultural icon source of both comedy and drama.
In a franchise as longlasting as this, why shouldn't we embrace the protector of earth and embodiment of multiple forces of nature and horror as someone who can be both fun and scary at the same time?
The mix of both really help to bring more people close to him, and this shared joy is somethinh to cherish.

The "fun of movies" is what made every diehard cinephile, a cinephile. A film nerd doesn't cite watching Tarkovsky and Godard as their origin story as a film buff. They cite the genre fare that engaged their imagination. They found the arthouse and "serious stuff" later.
Now, people have a detached, cynical, and baseline contempt for a lot of the entertainment they engage in. And it shows in how backwards and wrong-headed their criticisms tend to be.
If the shit they loved growing up came out today, they would hate it.

You're right that the Godzilla franchise has endured because it is silly as well as serious. It was a Showa era film (I think Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla) that turned me into a Godzilla fan. When I grew older, I saw the first Godzilla, American and original versions, which also impressed me.
You also made me realize how the silly Godzilla films have more depth than I had considered. The latest example is Godzilla x Kong, which had themes about loneliness, finding home, and the evil of slavery. On that note, Skar King wins the award as the EVILLEST villain in the Monsterverse.
Continue the excellent work. I look forward to your reviews of future Godzilla and Kong films.

I was introduced to Godzilla by american 1998 movie, which I still love despite all the criticism about it. I know it's flawed, and even not nearly as intellegent as some other Godzilla's movies, but I can't help myself, exept enjoying it.
And because of that, Zilla is my favorite kaiju in godzilla's franchise. I love his design and his behavior (but not his hermaphroditism, I would actually prefer if he was a female), even though, he doesn't act like Godzilla untill "The Series".
But my favorite kaiju ever is Godzilla's greatest rival - Gamera. I don't actually know, why, but I think it's because there is something in a giant ass monster, brutal enough to rip his enemies apart (like in "Rebirth"), but fighting for humanity, instead against it. And I think, it feels more natural for Gamera, since even the first film kinda showed his "friend of all children" characteristic, unlike Godzilla, who wasn't like that even three movies after his appearence.

The Monarch Godzilla's annoy me just because of the retcon of the US nuclear testing in the Pacific becoming a noble attempt to stop Godzilla instead of a horrifying atrocity. It happens in the opening credits frames of the 2014 movie and it carries through thematically, with the US military being generally heroic (like it would have made so much more sense to kill off the son and follow Brian Cranston's character rather than the other way around), through the later Monarch movies as well. I love serious Godzilla and i love silly Godzilla, but most of all i love subversive Godzilla, and an American approach just doesn't seem to have the capacity for subversiveness. Honestly I just want an American Godzilla movie that's taken seriously like 2014 did. I hate the new ones that are just basically fast and the furious but as kijus. It would be one thing if this series started out as a goofy Godzilla series but it started as a serious movie and what followed should take the same seriousness but it completely went the opposite to the point it's like a completely different franchise but they just stole the design. What is most upsetting is a lot of these so called "fans" of Godzilla won't admit there bad or they do and say there supposed to be witch there not because they are movies and your not supposed to make a bad movie on purpose. It would be fine if they make it a little more silly but it's to the point that it breaks it's own rules of it's universe all the time and what doesn't help is these fans defending it. If you're a real fan then stop saying it's bad because that's what the fans want because it's not, the real fans want a good Godzilla movie with good writing. A lot of these people who are fans are just losers like when marvel movies came out and people pretend they knew the comics and the upsetting thing is those same people will keep funding these bad movies so they keep making more and it's already starting to be a lazy crash grab franchise and once they've milked it and are done no one is going to make a new film or franchise that's good because of how tainted the American Godzilla image has become and are probably not going to get the rights for it again or at least for a long time for the same reason. The sillyness is not what makes Godzilla and even creators of the original franchise tried to distance themselves after that era because it was embarrassing. We need to have good Godzilla movies not lazy cashgrabs for braindead audiences because that's not what a Godzilla movie is and these so called fans are just coping when they say there supposed to be bad and silly mostly because they don't want to admit they like something that's bad and are purposely ruining Godzilla for others. And it's even more cringe how many videos are coming out to defend how good a bad movie is when there's the slightest bit of valid criticism and never actually think and just blindly defend with no logical argument besides "I like bad movies therefore you should too". Ive never seen any movie get defended like this before witch just goes to show how angry and toxic the legendary fans are, I mean everyone in this fanbase knows a UA-camrs name like he's Hitler reincarnated just because he was the first to point out how bad the films are getting and some people who are criticizing are even getting death threats. These people just need to realize these films are bad and that's it, there's no good characters there's no heart or soul in the films and just because a character acts cute or sad for the most basic fan appeal isn't good character it's just hey look "jingling keys" and these people eat it up. If you want bad writing with silly characters go watch she hulk.

Just like Star Wars, Godzilla has always been mixbag since 1955 and 2014 ain't that different. Most people praised that movie back then not because of the story or nailing the serious tone but rather yet the CGI and action.
Yes we are all agree GxK movie is a bad movie sure but don't act like 2014 was good and superior either just because it has more serious. If there is anything, Godzilla 2014 story is forgottable at best, most of the characters are bland and forgottable while the script is filled with overtly simplistic rhetoric while trying to be tense that even a sitcom movie is more tense than Godzilla 2014.
Heck, Godzilla 2014 isn't even a good movie especially if you're comparing it to Korean movie, The Host or even District 9 who nailed the serious tone and human stories much better than Godzilla 2014 While Godzilla 2014 is just another big dumb fun movie just like any Godzilla movies before.

I think Godzilla is like Batman, people have been to the introduced to the serious Batman thanks to the recent movies particularly Nolan's ones (which honestly have really goofy moments which people forget.) But Batman can be silly as well as serious. One of my favourite adapations of Batman is Batman: The Brave and Bold which was more based in the silver age as supposed the later modern or bronze age which is more common these days. But I still like both and the comics still have silly moments along with serious ones which I've read.
I got introduced to Godzilla through the 1998 American remake and its animated series that came with it. But I like Mothra too.

I believe the Reina and MonsterVerse are completely separate eras. I love them all. I like how they can be absurdly silly and serious critiques of mankind.

One of my favorite Godzilla films doesn't even technically contain Godzilla, not the real one anyway. Basically the film is about a boy who gets bullied and imagines Godzilla on monster island with a handful of other monsters as a mental escape while also learning some kind of lesson in the end. Been awhile since I seen it so I don't remember the specifics but I always thought that was such a neat idea to do with Godzilla. Him being such an icon by that point as well as the films becoming basically banging action figures together, it makes a weird amount of sense to make a film were it is just a child's imagination of Godzilla and his epic fights. Can't even remember what it's called but it's a good one if you like the sillier side of the franchise. I could be misremembering but I believe one of Godzilla's kids is in it too snd that's specifically who the kid is friends with in his imagination. Godzilla protecting their baby Godzilla, and the boy by proxy, from other monsters throughout.
