Going for the adelaide crows is like a break up that you keep reliving day by day hoping it to get better and not hurt. This season still stings but let's hope 2025 is better (probably won't be)
Problem with the AFL is that fundamentally, for every winner there must be 17 losers. In a 20 club league, you could feasibly go a lifetime without a flag. It's kinda scary.
@thegaz-man which is why I think we desperately need another opportunity for teams to win a legitimate piece of silverware each season. The minor Premiership should be it! Just give it a proper name, have a proper trophy & presentation and give 1 million + in prize money. Do these things and watch it grow and gain some prestige. Sydney getting zilch for being clearly the best team of the 2024 H&A season just doesn't feel right to me. They should get something for their efforts. What you think?
@RobKieranz that's what the McLelland Trophy was about until a couple of years ago when they combined the AFLW with it. Not sure if there's prizemoney anymore for the minor Premiership in either division by itself but I agree there should be. We need a pre season cup as well, a proper one, again with prizemoney. As you say, one trophy a year isn't enough. I'm a big fan of the soccer approach where there's a league, a cup competition for the top league teams, and a cup competition for every team in the country. I'd love a mid season FA Cup equivalent tournament. Gives prizemoney, more gate takings for smaller clubs, and gives us the possibility of, say, Southport going up against Collingwood. Would be so fun.
I'm so used to the heartbreak with the team that it's my defult expectation, even if we are truly domiant, like in 2017. If we ever won another flag in my lifetime, It would mean the world to all of us who grew up with the team post 1990s.
2017 broke me. How we can be that good and just fall over, and not even come close to getting up for 7 whole years. Lots of trust and faith out the window
Amazing video as usual, still can’t believe the universe where all of this combined to happen on top of the missed call in the Sydney game, stung a ton as the crows are my second team 30:50 cannot wait for you to eventually have to cover that disaster-class North season, as a budding supporter in my teens watching some of those games live, particularly the gutting losses to Adelaide and West Coast, probably did a lot to prepare me for the current age of woefulness (excluding the girls, obviously, what a season they had!)
That must have hurt - the Tigers were my second team until 2017 happened so I vaguely know the feeling! Oh I am so looking forward to talking about that 2013. That team could have finished second, if they just had a bit more defensive acumen. Such an exciting side when they were on, can totally see why a young fan would side with them. And yeah, that women's team is a damn steamroller. Will cover them too, no one really got close.
A really well made video that is really hard to watch having been a Crows fan since 1993. As much as reliving it hurts my soul, you did a great job of covering all the ups and downs... And more downs
Ooooft Tex at CHF, playing an early Carey type role. Modra up front, scoring goals of the year for fun. I'd much rather have a newgen McLeod though, need that pinpoint passing rebound type operator. Send Laird to the VAFA
Don't forget Dawson's missed free vs Collingwood (I know this shit happens. Just for the purpose of the vid of a season that turned out like this) Great vid mate. Nice to get some more Crom content
Yup, that was a joke. I tried to keep it strictly to things totally within Adelaide's control, though. Umpiring is a different what-if (discounting Keays, obvs)
Yep, been waiting so long for it. Will be absolutely huge. Probably end up as a 30 point away loss to like the Bulldogs or some weird crap tho knowing us 😅😅😅
Definitely more used to a soccer ball where the drop won't let you down too much. Really made me appreciate how skilled sharpshooters like Larkey are. Will practice more for the next time, whenever that happens 😅
Still can't believe it. I'm of the belief that the hit the post rule should be abolished. Just makes things so much easier, and lines up with literally every other sport haha
never recovered from that silly Power Ranger stance or that 2018 preseason camp where they got tied to trees and had to sing the Richmond song on repeat - forever the shame and embarrassment of South Australia, the not so mighty Adelaide Crows
That whole period showed that Pyke just wasn't the right man for the job. I feel any coach would have managed to get similar if not better results, without being quite as much of a psycho
For me, the two Pies games beat it to 1st, just because we had the lead. The fact they all happened in a four month span just kinda groups them all into one massive heartbreak though
2023 was almost as much of a wasted opportunity as 2005, 2006, 2012 and 2017, we played like a top 4 team, we kept getting close when against top 4 teams, but couldn’t get the wins, it was agonising to come up so short in those games, then the Sydney game happened, which made it tenfold, couldn’t believe that bullshit took place. But despite all that it showed promise and that we were heading in the right direction, thought surely we’d make finals in 2024, then 2024 happened and it was beyond disappointing, though just like the years prior, I was able to take some positives out of it. For 2025 I can only see improvement, provided we have a clean bill of health and the players have improved, one of the perks of being bottom 4 is that the fixture is easier the following year, we’ve also added some solid players to our list, if everything goes right, surely we improve, I don’t want to put expectations too high but a challenge for finals is a possibility, even if we just make 8th, it’s a positive.
Anything other than finals is the end of Nicks. Surely. More than enough talent on the list. For me, 2024 is only behind 2018 for disappointment stakes. This has to be the year...I hope.
I know it's too new to be iconic yet (and we don't know yet if there'll be any ongoing storylines that connect to it) but when you mentioned that gws slaughtering of essendon it made me want to see an "anatomy of a blowout" kind of video about it, or about any other recent similar games that you think have anything interesting to examine
I did the Corio Exorcism (Geelong’s belting of Melbourne in 2011) a while ago. I'm looking at doing the Richmond-Geelong 2007 game soon - would fit nicely into the creation of some sort of football autopsy kind of series for blow-outs!!!
Damn I almost forgot how much Jones contributed to the team that year (inaccuracy aside). He seemed to really struggle in '24 and with the new recruits I honestly can't see him getting back in the side.
My 2023 numbers had Jones on par with Angus Brayshaw in terms of overall contribution, amazing considering the AFL stats classed him in the wrong position. Such a shame to see him regress this year, esp with Peat, Cumming and ANB ready to come straight into the side
The scoring power of the team was largely based on Tex winding the clock back and playing like he was 26-28 again. For evidence compare their 2023 total score to 2024 and also look at the drop off in output from Walker. 2193 was their total score in 23, 1906 was the total in 24. That is down by 287 points. Walker kicked 76 goals and 34 behinds in 23 and 29 goals 20 behinds in 24. That is a drop of 292 points. Coincidence? I don't think so. Edit: I commented before I watched the video. This was pretty well covered.
100%, Tex really covered the bulk of scoring. I'm hoping Riley and Fogs can fill the gap in 2025 bc Tex sure as hell won't kick more than 40, not sure how Fogs deals with the best defender though
@thegaz-man Thilthorpe has to become the main man. I think Fogarty is best as a third tall, or used as a "decoy" leader to the flanks and pockets if he is the second tall. He would drag away a defender from the corridor and make it harder to go second man up on Riley. A defender would have to follow him or he ends up taking easy marks and he is accurate enough to do scoreboard damage from 3-5 set shots even if they are all on acute angles. Fogarty has limitations, he doesn't get to enough contests, he doesn't chase particularly hard, his second efforts are often questionable. He is still relatively young for a key forward but I don't know if he has huge improvement in him or if he will at best be a 10-12 possession 1.6 goals/game role player for his whole career. I think that was part of the reason Adelaide didn't go harder for Lukosius as he has weaknesses in similar areas. I am a Hawks fan so this is just my outsider perspective.
It was a blessing we didn’t make the 8 in 2023. Would’ve missed out on Curtin. Maybe even made a push this year with momentum and missed out on Draper. No need to jump the gun early. Crom have been slowly building since 2020. Next year I’m expecting good things. Fingers crossed. Cheers.
I just hope they grow - would hate to be like the Demons who basically tanked for Scully and Trengove. Adelaide have never seemed to manage playing the results/draft positon game well, hoping that this all kinda works out haha
@@thegaz-man I can understand that take. Way I look at it is we’ve tried the whole ‘avoiding rebuild’ style for too long. Didn’t work for us in through the 2012 and 2017 years. We’ve finally bitten the bullet and opted to rebuild. The best teams of all time have gone through the same process. The turn around is never quick and never linear. Been watching footy a long time. Have faith, I believe the crows are coming.
This is good proof that the AFL will need to change to the top 10 once the 20th team is introduced. They can have wildcard week in the usual week off before finals start and operate like the VFL currently is. If it was already implemented then Adelaide could have made something of this season.
Agree that a 20 team league absolutely means finals have to be reshaped. Not sure if I'm comfortable with the idea of a 10th placed side winni g a flag but if any deserved to, it's these Crows.
For me if we made the finals in 2024, '23 would still suck but it would be like the loss we needed to have. As it is, it's just a reminder of how good we really should be but aren't. This one was so painful to make
Just going to say here that Charlie Curnow is a scrupulously fair man mountain of a player who is basically hard to stop without infringing when he’s on song
Absolutely true, and the analytics back it up. I'm biased in my feelings for Curnow just bc I'm invested in the Crom but I like him wayyy better than McKay. Curnow a joy to watch when on song, and when not constantly infringed by defenders
@ Harry at his best reminds me of pre knee injury young Paul Salmon but not as good a kick. Charlie plays like Carey sometimes without being a garbage human.
Richmond absolutely, Melbourne I can kinda see, depends on mental barriers. North are obviously down there, for me they're way worse than Coll or Adel. I think the next eight teams are so close that I can't see any that will stay stuck to the bottom for the forseeable. Even West Coast I think will jump up.
@thegaz-man Yeah North Melbourne are the gangrene of competition now and I think Adelaide are not that far off from a fiasco if Nicks gets sacked. Collingwood have had their two Grand Finals in 2018 & 2023, which statistically suggests their window is closed and on the downward trend now. Richmond are going to suffer a couple years worse than the Eagles did recently and speaking of the Eagles I have them up to 11th or 12th as they were a couple of kicks away in a few games from getting 8 wins in 2024.
The AFL need to invest in better cameras for goals. After seeing what they can do with the cameras at the Olympics, or other football codes around the world, the AFL can't call themselves world leaders in technology.
0:49 Yeah, we suck 😂😂😂😂😂 We can score as much as we like, it doesn't help our defense and midfield when we can't kick straight. We also don't know how to somehow know how draft gun midfeilders and great defenders.
Even as a numbers nerd I always say the most important stat is the scoreboard! We draft mids as well. We just shove them on a forward flank for five years 😅😅 Need a decent small back though. Miss Luke Brown so bad
20 teams has to be the absolute max, and even then yeah I agree, it's probably too much. Problem is, unless a Vic team relocates, new markets are locked off, and that's probably never going to happen. As much as I think the Suns are a joke, the AFL will never admit their errors and move/fold them. Here's what I'd do, if money and public opinion were no object: - merge North with either Essendon or Melbourne, consolidating the # of Vic sides - relocate the Bulldogs, rotate them through Bendigo and Ballarat (5 home games each) with the remainder of home games spread out among regional centres. Make them a proper west Vic side, represent country Vic. Plenty of talent out there. - brand new Canberra team as the 20th licence - old North licence goes to a new team either in NT or New Zealand. If NT, one game per month (any team, whoever wants) is to be sold as New Zealand home game. If NZ, Suns to play 16 home games a year, 8 in GC, 8 in NT.
The AFL is not a game it’s a league. The game is Australian rules football. Please for the love of god never say “the afl is the most multi faceted game in the world” because that caused me physical pain
I mean, I just cry whenever I think about it but that's just me. Don't know what we do if we miss the 8 this year. Maybe draw a frowny face on the back of Nicksy's bald head?
@thegaz-man No need to dumb things down mate it made perfect sense. Could do the same type video with Freo in 2024 quite easily. Most games lost by under a kick. If they reversed a couple of them would have finished second. Only team to beat both grandfinalists.
Problem is that they're too similar, crash and dump kick style of player. One works, two doesn't, and Laird is too wasteful in front of goal to be valuable. Soligo, Dawson, Crouch, Berry, Peatling is my starting mids for R1 personally
@ Laird and Crouch’s biggest problem is they don’t run both ways which is we have to push up our half-forwards to the contest and we kept playing the kids we would have made the finals last year and we would have been more competitive this year. Nicks needs to go sooner rather than later.

Fascinating. A+ content yet again

theres one by jagga skillback about our 2014 season
Anything by him I'd recommend. He's great at giving an oberview of something and explaining it in a clear and entertaining way.

- brand new Canberra team as the 20th licence
- old North licence goes to a new team either in NT or New Zealand.
Yeah apologies about that, bit of laziness on my part bc it feels easier to say AFL than Aussie Rules.
@ all good! Loved the rest of the video otherwise :p
Well karma caught up to them then
yeah; I'd "like" it, but that don't cover it at all. good work, though; what are we to do with them?
I mean, I just cry whenever I think about it but that's just me.
Don't know what we do if we miss the 8 this year. Maybe draw a frowny face on the back of Nicksy's bald head?
Could you have made it anymore confusing?!
Apologies if I didn't explain things the best! If there's anything I can make clearer, let me know.
@thegaz-man No need to dumb things down mate it made perfect sense.
Could do the same type video with Freo in 2024 quite easily. Most games lost by under a kick. If they reversed a couple of them would have finished second. Only team to beat both grandfinalists.
Will admit I didn't take a look at Freo's what-ifs, probably should have considering how close they got to September!
We need to get rid of Laird and Crouch they are horrible players in the modern game and have probably cost us 10 games by just being on the field.
