Wanting to get your first old Euro car as maintenance will not be the only thing to worry about, but also the upfront cost of purchase. Thankfully, an alternative is available on the market, Volvos. This 1996 Volvo 850 T5 Estate is a great choice for the first time Euro owner, being around 50% or more cheaper than its German counterparts while giving you the same great Euro car feel, extreme comfort, and practicality.
Released for the model years 1992 - 1996, the Volvo 850 Sedan and the its Estate variant was made by Volvo to directly compete against the Mercedes Benz W202 C Class, BMW E36 3 Series, and the Audi B5 A4, while providing more space, and practicality akin to the mid size cars of those brands, namely the E Class, 5 Series, and Audi A6. This T5 variant of the 850 pumped out so much power from its 2.3L turbocharged engine while still delivering sleeper-like understated and unassuming looks from the exterior. Despite the more performance oriented nature of the T5, it still was able to deliver on the two main things that a Volvo is supposed to be, comfortable, and safe.
MY: 1992 - 1997 (Estate in 1993)
Known as the 850 Turbo (released 1994) and redesignated as 850 T-5 in 1997
1994 Facelift:
New front and rear bumpers
new headlights and indicators on the outside
new switchgear on the inside
T-5 2.3
2.3L I5
225PS, 300Nm torque
4 speed automatic
0-100 7.4s

Beautiful car. Love the color.

Thank you @Robert! I was the owner of the car at the time it was reviewed, and chose to have it painted in an Aquamarine shade that I thought really brought out the lines of the car!
Your videos are amazing by the way! I’ve tried doing DIY more than once using them!
The reason for the single airbag is that this car was probably privately imported from Sweden (or northern Europe) since you've got temperature in Celsius and fuel in liter's. In the 90s and early 00s it was common in Scandinavia to not have a passenger airbag in a family car because you where supposed to have a rear facing car seat in the passenger seat. In Sweden we have our kids facing backwards until they're 4/5 years (and it obviously saves a lot of children from death or severe injuries). Besides, airbags are primarily improving safety for the driver, protecting him/her from the steering wheel.
Interesting. Didn’t know that. Thanks for the insight :)
I remember something being said that the dashboard is so far away from the passenger seat, that there is no way the passenger would hit it in a collision. Thus the passenger airbag was optional. But its also possible with the child car seat case. I have an 850 with a passenger airbag, and there appears to be no way of disabling it.
@@ZoneSix if I remember correctly the driver side was standard from 1993 but passenger side airbag was optional in the Nordic market. I had a -96, 960 with
SIPs bags on the passenger seat but no frontal airbag. My current 850 is a US spec car that
was imported to Sweden (made in Belgium) and consequently has DOT airbags (larger then the European ones because in Europe they're only intended as a supplement to the seat belt while in the US they're supposed to work without seat belts.
@@davskol On the European market for the 1993 models, the driver airbag was optional. It became a standard from 1994. At least that is the trend I've seen from viewing a hundred or so used volvo 850 listings. The airbag in the 1993 models was the same as the USDM cars. Only in 1994 did they change it for the European models. Think the JDM ones also got the same treatment.
Love these cars, we call them estate cars here in the UK. These were used by the Police for years over here, I remember getting pulled over a couple of times by them! But was the T5 I think or V70 2002 later on. Boy could they shift! Very fast cars, I was so impressed by them I bought one years later, I have the V70 2.4 Diesel 2002 reg atm. The fastest car I've owned yet, and that 5 cylinder growl of an engine 💪
Congrats! Glad to hear some extra history on it too
@9:00 Driving with the hood unlatched. LOLOLOL
WOOOPS my bad
It stressed me out, glad someone else saw that! 😂
😂😂
The AIRMIX dial defines how much NON-heated cold air straight from the outside you want to let in through the center vents. It's an alternative to opening the windows in bad weather conditions.
It really hurts my soul how many dashoards are this wavy and mangled from bending them to reach the instrument cluster. There's a proper, relatively easy way to do this job, without any bending. (Complete removal of the top of the dashboad, which does include removing the passenger airbag with it.) It's easy if you know what you're doing.
I had one of these for 3 years. Loved it. Fast . Spacious . Ran like a top to 285,000 miles. then then oil looked like a milkshake. Head gasket Issue I think and a little rusty so I sold it. It would spin the tire(s) for 20 feet too
Yep when the milkshake comes in, it's time to say goodbye
The legendary tough and fast running Volvo 850 T5 Estate 96 model. You realy choose the car you review very well kyle. It only proves that your a car guy that knows his stuff very well. Great review as expected. Stay safe. Godbless. 🤗🐫🙏
Thanks! I’d say I’m just lucky I got the chance to review these cars hehe
I drive the exact same one. Same color. Love everything about it. I park this thing way better then short cars.
What a stunning example. I want it!
Man! Probably you are the first person that gave an old volvo a proper review.
Love all those informative quirks! 🤣
Howver there is some audio noise in the latter part of the video which is a bummer but anyway all of it is absolutely👌👌
Thanks! Actually the audio was clipping because of the crap ton of interior rattles hahaha
@@KyleLiongCars That's why! Hahaha but yeah goes with the age they say
Yep for most Volvos of the era
This is a family man race car-don’t mess with it; put the pedal to the metal, the turbo kicks-in n leaves you smoking.
Slight turbo lag but yes it kicks :D
This has been the best video review on this car. Thank you.
Thanks
The “air mix” dial controls how much air it lets in from the outside. If it’s really hot out you want it open to let cool fresh air into the car from the outside. Opposite if it’s cold out
Ohhh so it’s like a mix control for the recirculate?
@@KyleLiongCars yeah, although there is also a recirculate button specifically for that. Airmix is a direct feed of outside air into the car, keep it up man !
Thanks for the info :)
The best car ever made - can do it all! - the trick now if finding a good one that hasn’t been abused
Absolutely
Hi Kyle that is a lovely 850 t5 , a racing car almost! ,how does it keep up with traffic where you are? I was driving these FAST in the Uk from 2000 - 2015 , very little to challenge a good one with a healthy motor/ turbo especially when they first come on the scene !
Sadly it’s not mine and haven’t been able to test it out rigorously
Shame! Nice review though bud
Thanks
Love the part where you interview the owner at 13:22 , you should include more of that in your future videos, it's always nice to see the owners passion for the car and the history behind it.
Most owners don’t want to be seen on cam haha! I also enjoyed the short interview. Glad you liked it as well :)
@@KyleLiongCars Ohh okay haha ! Great review as usual :)
Thanks again
I suspect that car’s got tired suspension. 850 t5’s should handle well (for their size and weight). They should corner fairly flat and be pretty fun on twisty roads.
Could be
Don’t think you’ve shut the bonnet properly. There are two catches, one on each side of the bonnet, give each a light push
Yep my bad haha
I see you're so close to 10k!
VERY SOON HAHA! Thanks for the support as usual :)
Lovely colour! Nice to see that it has so less miles done yet! Unless it has the notorious gear breaking in the mileage counter haha
Forgot to check haha
clearly has a great secondary bonnet/hood safety catch...
Woooops
A wagon is like a man's version of a mini-van haha. I LOVE Volvo's of this era, and older. My Aunt and Uncle had a 1996 Volvo 850 sedan, and I've always liked seeing their car, and it was cooler since theirs had a 5 speed manual. Just like my Lolo's 190 Benz, I thought this was going to be eventually passed down to me, I was optimistic, it was then given to my cousin after he emigrated from the Philippines.
That's very unfortunate. It would have been really nice if you got to enjoy it haha! Hmmm if anything it's more like a car guy's version of a mini-van haha :D
I dunno about “lack the ability to take on corners.” This specific body was in the btcc. It didn’t win shit but I’m sure it was held in a track that had corners. Ton of features in this car that wasn’t at all mentioned like the delta link suspension, and how easy this engine could be bumped to 300hp. Overall this car for its market price right now and the way it moves? You can never get that from a 124 wagon nor an e34 wagon. You have to pay tons of money to have fun with those.
Yep agree the 124 and E34 wagons are crazy expensive now. Not sure if this particular example I tried didn’t have the suspension in the most perfect shape, or if it’s really the car’s design, but yeah, it didn’t wanna take corners much haha
@@KyleLiongCars I mean T-5R's and R's handle really good in corners
I wanna try the R models
How easy is it to get to 300hp
If you think that’s boxy, I’m curious how you’ll review the styling of the 700 Series.
Wonderful bricks though!
Semento....
Love that Uniqlo shirt and specialized plate
Got it from Uniqlo China :D
i wonder where do he get parts for his 850 im also planning on owning one as my daily driver my only concern is the availability of parts and trusted volvo shops here in philippines
Check out R Systems in Westgate :D
I had a 97 T5 wagon and it was in really nice shape, much nicer than this one, and it was really quick, loved that car.
Where’s it now?
@@KyleLiongCars somewhere in Michigan, I sold it 11 years ago ;)
Is that a 850 T5 without a rear wing? alright that's enough internet for this week.. 😂
Was this shot at Clark? Btw, nice review as always!
Nope! This is down South!! Thanks :)
Shot in the Alabang Country Club
Looks like we have pretty interesting uploads today! 👀
Yessir
Amazing colour! What is it called? Was it an official Volvo colour at the time?
Not sure of the name but it is an original color
It is an original color. My 850 is the same color, can't recall what it was called though
1:25 you need the tire size 205/50/16 for the turbo rims
Isn’t that what I said? Haha
@@KyleLiongCars Sorry i didn't hear you're right
No worries :)
what!? it was a 7 seater?!
Yup!!
shut the bonnet!!
My bad
Still available for sale?
Unfortunately sold already
