  • Here is how to replace the petcock fuel valve on a Harley-Davidson motorcycle. Replacing the petcock on your Harley Davidson motorcycle is easy. I used a Golan petcock, which looks great and is guaranteed forever.
    Here is where you can buy a cheap OEM replacement Harley Petcock:

    I had to replace the petcock on my '89 fxrs-sp a couple of months back. I ordered a Drag Specialties petcock that resembled a Pingle and cost about the same. Within maybe a dozen uses it no longer stopped the flow of gas. In fact, if you blow into the fuel outlet with the petcock in the off position, it whistles. I have a 30 dollar cheapy on it for now and so far so good. Pingle was my back up option until I watched this video. Thanks for posting and I look forward to a long term update.

    I've had both Golan and Pingel. My Pingels didn't leak, but I prefer the Golan. Love the detents, and the machining and finish on the Golan petcocks is beautiful. One thing you didn't mention is that different length reserve tubes are also available for the Golan petcocks.

      They really are well made in every way, and they look great. I didn't know about the different length reserve tubes. Thanks.

    Hey, thanks for the video. Can't beat watching someone actually do it so you know exactly what you're in for. A definite bonus was learning about the Golan petcock. Never heard of them before. I was going to replace it with the stock petcock but after watching your vid, I decided make sure I'll never have the same problem again. Fuel was leaking through the diaphram of the vacuum operated safety valve. (Ironic isn't it? A safety feature that will definitely some day create a very unsafe situation.) Anyway, I'm holding the exact same model Golan petcock that you installed in your vid. Really nice! Thanks for telling us about it.

    P.S. Also thanks for the instructional vid on how to wash a motorcycle. I was actually expecting to get some pointers on like how to keep water away from where it shouldn't be, etc., but instead I got the best tip ever! You're so right, that is the ultimate way to wash a Harley!

    I changed my 87 Fxrs carb from a butterfly to newer cv . The old line routed down between the cylinders and into the butterfly carb. The c.b carb fuel outlet faces upward so it was made to come straight across below the tank and feed the carb. My petcock was a straight down too so I just left the fuel line go down between the cylinders and climb back up into the carb. I realized that is not the ideal situation creating a trap effect but the bike runs good so I went with it. Well ,I had the bike just shut down on me once and I found no reason for it, so it restarted and ran fine. I think I am occasionally starving fuel or getting an air pocket so I am going to get an out the back petcock and take the fuel line straight across under the tank and eliminate the drop. Nice job on your install. Looks great!

    Good info. I ordered an oem 2001 vacuum petcock for my 1999 im doing soon, 1200 sportster. $130 new old stock but your style is sweet. Im doing a mew gas line and new tank filter as well. Looks like keeping the bolt loosened up to catch the tank threads is a good point...as it tighten it also tightens petcock threads. This will be one of my winter projects coming up. Im putting a brass fuel fitting on my carb instead of the nylon as well

    If your fuel petcock ever leaks, it could very well be the fault of ethanol containing gasoline, and not really because of a 'bad' fuel petcock. It can even cause the sealant you used on your fuel outlet bunge threads to fail. I use Permatex part number 80019, and the TDS sheet states it will only hold up to non-ethanol containing gasoline. So after you go through the trouble and expense of installing a brand new $110 petcock, you might want to avoid ethanol gasoline.

    I had my petcock replaced had a guy do it cost me 500$ my petcock leaks. What I found out when I checked my oil is it was overflowing and had gas in it when I opened it. So now I’m changing my oil but don’t want this to happen again. ! What do I do from here? It’s a 2000 sportster 883 . I want to fix it myself so I know it’s right. Because 500$ almost blew up my bike. But I caught it before it damaged it.

    • @hoohoohoblin
      @hoohoohoblin  8 років тому

      You can just plug the vacuum line with a cap from the auto parts store. The new petcock doesn't have a vacuum switch in it, so it doesn't need the vacuum, and the engine will run fine as long as you plug the vacuum line.

    just bought a Pingel fuel valve it flows 76oz & factory stock flows only 28oz: i am running a Andrews EV-3 Cam i need more fuel into my 42 MM Mikuni on my 1997 FXDL 80inch, and the factory fuel valve is junk leaking into the carb the diaphragm is junk, it is a vacuum style just trash design from 1994 all the way up until they stop making carburetors...

    • @hoohoohoblin
      @hoohoohoblin  7 місяців тому

      I agree. An aftermarket valve is much more reliable and less likely to leak, and definitely flows a lot more fuel.

      Make sure gas is actually getting into the carb. Either unscrew the drain plug on the bottom of the carb or unhook the fuel line and make sure has comes out when you turn it on.

    • @hoohoohoblin

      +James Murphy It is not vacuum operated. If you are replacing a vacuum operated petcock with one of these non-vacuum ones, make sure you plug the vacuum line that was connected to the old petcock.
