That's because the 427 Hi Risers sat so tall that the hood wouldn't close so they made a special bubble hood . NASCAR banned that engine because it wouldn't fit under a stock hood .
Josh-the-mediocre you are right my man. 65-66 were stacked headlights and the cars looked totally different than the 61, 62, 63 1/2, 64 cars. 63&64 are harder to tell apart. 1967 is just beautiful and 1968 handsome as can be. 69 looked similar to 68 but just didn’t cut it. 67 was last stacked headlights, 68 on was horizontal but from the rear 67&68 are hard to tell apart.
Brings back some memories; my Father bought a new '64 Galaxie 500 XL R-Code 300hp w/ C-6 for the "family car". For a large car, it did scoot. He bought a Sunbeam Tiger for himself. This car here has potential, but I'd definitely toss those crappy aluminum valve covers and go back to stock along a few other mods.
Back in about 1990 at local cars how there was a real 63 1/2 427 Galaxie in red with Magnum 500(I know they aren’t right but they looked RIGHT) wheels, but the sound of it was over the top. Not stupid loud but it did vibrate the ground, and the lope with high compression made for the sound of a monster, very opposite of these modern trucks with stupid loud shitty sounding mufflers. That Galaxie was truly badass.
All factory cast 427 blocks had cross bolted mains. Z code doesnt mean 390 /4 speed. It just means it was built with the z code 390 at the factory. All FE engines can be converted to cross bolted mains bearings . Original Top loader would have been more appealing since Tremec made more than one 5 speed and they differ in strength significantly.
The Gorilla knows his cookies. The Z-code is the most desirable of the non-427 based cars, though. Just not necessarily a four-speed from the factory. That was pretty rare.
Paint has chips and scratches, wait a min???? Who cares about scratches its a 4 speed and has a 427 ci ford motor thats whats important not scratches my goddness......GEEEEEEEES.
@@TommyRibs 400 rwhp side oiler ... 400 exactly huh ? Sounds like a guesstimate not chassis dyno certified. That tremec and 9" shouldnt create that much parasitic loss of HP. A well built stock spec 427 should easily put numbers up in the mid 400s at the flywheel. Sounds like a solid lifter cam but a tame one
Gorilla Cookies when we chassis Dyno’d a 427 Cobra a few years ago it was 403hp at the rear wheels. It did have a Top Loader 4 Speed so maybe the Tremec is better in terms of less loss. But if you figure ~18-22% power loss, the ~400 at the wheels makes sense. The key to the side Oiler is how well you can get it to breath going in and out.
THE TRANSMISSION that came behind 427's was a special top loader four speed,THEY were unbreakable, anything else and you'd be putting in new ones regulatarly,THE 427 was able to break everything from the flywheel back, if it wasn't right, that engine is to much for a 390 car..pull it out and put a 390 back in it,or buy lots of transmissions, drive shafts, rear ends,axles..IT WILL BREAK everything....
I agree with you on that. That 427 would be worth a lot more if you could somehow track down the car it was originally in, provided it was not wrapped around a tree somewhere.
Moonshine runner. I love those bubble hoods you see now and again on these.

Thunderbolt. Enough said.
I love how it starting playing comfortably numb
64, 65, and 66 were the most beautiful years for the Galaxie. This car is sweet.
'67 for me

Once upon a time. when they built beautiful cars, this is what you could buy. Too bad those days can never be recreated.

It's a 5 speed, should have kept the top loader. I really like the color Black over Silver .

Nice car .. Side oiler??
Yes, that would be a side oiler. ~ 400 HP at the rear wheels.

My Dad had this exact model, but it was painted butterscotch orange. An extremely ugly color, but boy could that thing fly!
