    RESPONSE TO THE ICE NEGATIVITY: I have to respond to all the comments about UD Ice being watered down. The product has been around since 1996-97. I have tracked it year-on-year. Even in Crosby's rookie year, which I broke, there were 150 players on the Level 4 and Level 3 checklist. Those were #/2,999 and #/1,999, so no different than having parallels, from a printing standpoint. For many years, most packs were solely base packs, and the cards were not always all acetates. There were never any shots at premium Exquisite RPAs. Now there are. The product was never about value, as the #/99 rookies were lottery tickets, mathematically. Their odds literally trended to zero. Yes, Ice has always been an acetate riffing on winter and ice novelty product. It did guarantee an auto, often a Glacial Graphs, and sometimes two jerseys. But, those were never about monetary value. Glacials were typically $10 on the secondary market, if that.
    Now, if we are going to fixate solely on monetary value in the hobby, we need to speak to the broader gaming and gambling culture that overran it. And why people buy cards in the first place. We must discuss actual market drivers, in a sellers market, not expectations divorced from what is actually going on. No company on the planet is forcing any sentient human to buy their Arby's sandwiches, unnecessary handbags, ugly cargo pants, or cardboard penny stock cards. Certainly not at release day prices, with Bedard on the horizon. This includes group breaks, and buying into "shares" of boxes at exorbitant multipliers. Why? To immediately sell the cards at a loss, after the gambling high evaporates. Breaks are events, not investments. This product, to me at least, has always been a great gift for children or teens. It's fun, tactile and varied; and yes its price will be decent during seasonal sales. Are you better off saving for a new iPhone? Sure. Mindful iPhones aren't about value. They are about overpaying for brand loyalty in a free market economy...

      I don’t like this years ICE or the last couple. It’s a slightly better version of MVP.
      Wanting value for money has nothing to do with gambling, I totally expect to pay a premium on a box that may not give me $4$ on what I’m paying for the breaking experience, but I do expect to be within a reasonable %. I just personally feel that ICE is one of the worst products out there.
      If others like it then that’s great👍

    • @Fultoncards
      @Fultoncards  8 місяців тому +3

      Jamie, you know I always take your point. But listen. Prices are set by *distributors* based on release day pre-orders, notably by group breakers. Group break prices are heavy, known multipliers. These multipliers exist if there are even just a few chase cards overvalued on the secondary market, as breakers continue to order these products, rooted in actual demand. The culture of these breaks is adrenaline seekers, mostly men of a certain age, divorced from the value of a dollar. (Not a knock, as I too partake on occasion, ideally math-based. We are a card community.) For lower end and niche novelty products like Ice, more geared toward shallower pockets, or say teens, the box prices tumble to where supply meets demand. Bargains are had during seasonal sales. But box breaks are about the "chase," and dreaming of high Holy Grail upside. People don't buy boxes or group break spots to focus on the *disclosed* dismal pack odds, in a new wax pack era, saturated by those who flock into the market with FOMO. We know that ppl buy boxes to game because otherwise they would simply target way above average cards directly on the *secondary* in a buyer's market, for less than box prices. Instead, they overpay significantly out of the gate for a 0.5% shot at a desired card. Mathematically, how many boxes would it take to hit that specific card if it is 0.5% odds? 200 boxes. If that isn't gambling, I don't know what is.
      To be fair, I'm not saying there aren't supply side issues. All industries are rife with supply aberrations. I am just pushing back at the dramatization around products on social media, driving social media engagement, and obviously monetization. But take Netflix for example. 95% of the content is *not* geared towards me personally. I would never watch that content; it is junk. Do I get infuriated at Netflix for generating such content? Of course not. I could take to social media to lambaste it, and thus drive my own content as I foment ire. But, that's not the premise of my channel. There is enough disdain, division, victimhood, and finger pointing on social media, which drive social media revenue. My channel is simply about discovering products, disclosing actual card math, and sharing my sentimental attachment to the hobby. So release day prices are a travesty in a saturated market. And car prices tank once you drive it off the lot. I'll enjoy a hockey game even if my team loses. I can't be annoyed about products where I am not the target market, or box outcomes I will never control. I can only suggest to others to understand broader market drivers, and wait for the certain seasonal sales where supply and demand ultimately meet.

      @@Fultoncards I totally hear you and I totally know how supply and demand works.
      Like you I’ve been in this hobby since the last millennium and really don’t like where the price of boxes has gone and the fact $150 doesn’t guarantee an Auto. I just don’t open boxes anymore, I just buy singles as I get what I paid for then.
      It’s not about affordability for me, I just can’t bring myself to pay those prices. I’m stuck in a bygone era I guess.🫣
      I’m glad that people like yourself do though👍

    • @Fultoncards
      @Fultoncards  8 місяців тому +2

      Oh we agree on this wholeheartedly. Well said. You're speaking to something deeper, and the heart of the issue. There is a massive difference between types of "collectors." We lump everyone together, which really confuses me. Borrowing my Netflix example, I only watch the 5% of the content I love, not the 95% where I am not the target market. I certainly don't meltdown over that other 95% completely divorced from my preferences. Say Jay Leno has about 340 cars and motorcycles. And, a single mom or teen in Buffalo might have a thirdhand crapulent car. Does the mom complain that Leno's cars are overpriced and can't be driven in winter? Does Leno complain how crapulent a workhorse thirdhand car is? Is the car industry a sham?
      So yes, the trajectory of the hobby strays wildly. But we come to this point every 20 years. I'm under no illusions. A market saturated with penny-stock market movers, and Bedard hype, invariably will be saturated with cards. It is precisely the fixation on "value" which got us to this point. On average, cards don't have value when money floods in and out of eBay based on exogenous forces like pandemics, social media virality, and endorphin rushes -- or middle men. None of that is rational and grounded. And rarely is it akin to being a hobbyist or an investor. Investing relates to real estate, or companies with certain growth, providing actual practical goods and services. So, I completely understand being sidelines. To be on the sidelines is to know the true value of a dollar.

      My problem with Ice, is that it is essentially Allure. Maybe my problem should be with Allure, cause it is Ice 2.0, but either way. Both products do not interest me. I prefer flagship, Artifacts, Trilogy, Stature, SPA and I will buy a random box of other products, but for me those are the essentials in my collection. Anyway, just my 2 cents.

    • @Fultoncards
      @Fultoncards  8 місяців тому +1

      Agree about preferring more acetates. This said, post McD, prices aren't based on "value." Otherwise, ppl would simply target cards on the secondary market, with 100% certainty, in a seller's market. Why don't they? Distributors set box prices in relation to the "culture," which currently is clearly rooted in gaming and gambling, and middle-men. An adrenaline chase. Cards aren't "watered down." They satisfy basic economic premises, notably in wax-popular eras, on release day, before eventual seasonal sales lower prices so supply and demand intersect.

    Tough product. With no auto guaranteed, a bunch of phony coloured parallels no one cares for, a mediocre rookie crop, and getting just TWO ice premieres, one or both of which may not even be a true ice premiere, at $170 it’s just horrendous value. At least in the past the acetate cards were base cards, and you got 5 ice premieres even if high numbered, and you got an auto along with 2 jersey cards back in the day to at least feel like you got something to enjoy. It’s just feels like a product you might break once and then wait for it to go on sale. Hard to get excited

    I'm with everyone else. Although the inserts are really nice they've oversaturated the rookies. Having base rookies is one thing but then they add parallels to the ice premiere's rookies. It was always about the chase for the /99 rookies and although they're still there, it just isn't the same now that you can get parallels of those same rare rookies. I'm a big fan of acetate so i miss seeing an all acetate base and the fact that UD has scaled the hits back to one auto or Jersey in today's market prices is just plain greed but i guess that's a constant between all of the card companies that have licenses.

  • @mirorbreaks8721

    Nice video as always Fulton
    I had a good time with 21-22 Ice last year. Maybe it was just your box but that was a rough one. A basic non-numbered jersey as the box hit, only two ice premiers and no other numbered cards.
    With the total amount of ice premiers in the entire print run it seems crazy to me that they give a minimum of 2 when 21-22 gave 3. Making the rip cards non-box hits is a step forward but that step goes back when you see a box like this where the only hit is a jersey like you got (it was a good jersey at least).
    All of that paired with the fact that the price for 21-22 and 22-23 being almost the same price I gotta avoid 22-23 Ice until it goes on sale.
    Thanks for always having fun and being positive in your videos and sorry if my comments keep sounding so negative. Keep up the great vids #dryden.

      By 2005-06, Ice wasn't clear acetate. It was opaque white plasticky stock. Later for a few years they went back to the original acetate. By 2018-19 they switched to blue cards with a metal sheen. But the Ice Premieres and Glacial Graphs were always acetates. The biggest change was introducing Exquisite cards in 2015-16. I think they even had UD Black cards in 2014-15 Ice.

    I hate that they're now making everything millions of variations of. When the Ice Premieres were just a basic version (/999, or /99, all good as long as each rookie was in one of these tiers with no extra other versions), plus a 1/1. It becomes basically worthless. And no, I'm not bashing this product because I want to see high ROI. Not at all about that for me as I'm a collector. That's why I hate it, from a collector's pov. There are plenty of products where you can build a rainbow if you like. Heck even in Ice, the base set has few color options. Why do you need to do Ice Premieres like this. I feel really bad for the collectors of these rookies. Luckily my boy, Kaprizov was the last class that had no Ice Premieres parallels other than the 1/1. #Dryden

    • @Fultoncards
      @Fultoncards  7 місяців тому

      Great comment. But economics is not a new science, or psychology for that matter. With so many ppl flooding back into the hobby, secondary market prices skyrocket, as there aren't enough cards in circulation. Card companies either increase (a) the numbering or (b) the parallels and inserts. So, the hobby is flooded with more products and more cards, to cash in on the exogenous shift in demand. All the temporary money in the hobby leaves after the hyperinflation, as ROI comes back to pre-pandemic levels. (I took the opportunity to predict this in my face reveal video, pre-pandemic.) Those with FOMO enter the "hobby" too late, and end up holding the bag. Then, all the latecomers in the hobby thinking - erroneously - there is a trick to money, glued to gambling on penny stock cards, leave the hobby. Usually they are angry, and blame private companies for being greedy, and screwing them. Demand for higher numbered cards decreases. And, who is left in the hobby? People who never left (I am one of them), and were never distracted by the money or print runs. How do I afford the cards? By having invested in *real* investments. I purchase cards from my entertainment budget. And lucky for me, box prices come down with the greater printing and less gamblers, as there is less upside. Then card companies again contract card production, to lure ppl back.

    Upper Deck needs to wake up and see how badly they are gouging their loyal customers with this garbage,,, most un numbered jersey cards go for like $2-3 .. that cant be the value proposition when the rest of the box is filler basically. By adding the worthless parallels of the acrtate premieres you cant get any value there either,,,, they make changes that take away all the features of the product that gave it value... so you get little or no value.. but the price is much too high.. its all a lottery play to get one of the exquisite or famous RCs ie #10 RPA or better acetate ie #99.
    These boxes will fall greatly in price to less than half original cost... with dealers losing because they had to take this to get any of the coming 23-24 high demand product.
    Dealers will lose a lot here and make some up later.. and overall be lucky to break even.

    • @Fultoncards
      @Fultoncards  8 місяців тому +1

      I do take your point, Tony. I commented under the video my personal opinion. Price points aren't set based on market "value." There is no such proposition in this day and age. Prices are set by distributors, based on the hobby devolving into a gaming a gambling culture, with middle men. Box odds are 100% disclosed. Savvy collectors buy directly on the secondary market, as it is a seller's market, and wait for seasonal sales where (actual) consumer demand meets supply. To my mind, to see it any other way is to misunderstand basic economics.
