Man, i need one of these for my collection of handhelds I hardly ever play... I have a disease and I refuse to seek help, unless it gets me more retro handhelds!
@@rodrigo53 to be fair I like to buy em either cheap to mess with and make sure they are a relatively unique form factor. Or ill buy a fancy one that I will main for a couple of years until it starts to lag behind. But I do keep them, and they make me happy to look at!
get the RG40v for the gameboy bigboy feel. which only works on the Gameboy games anyway. for anything else, get a vertical switch style handheld like the Retroid 5 or, yes, a Steamdeck if you dont mind the size.
its like everyone can't not stop saying this. this is the most common comment on this device, which is understandable but i always just want to scream "i get it, you like the steam deck!" its like everyone is possessed to say this instead of anything else.
@@MonoDree no i comepletely understand that, im a person who GREATLY preferrs small things, but from the perspective of somebody with a tight budget or is wanting there first handheld, the steam deck is like the baseline, personally, im looking at the odin 2 mini even though i have a steam deck and can play all the games id want on there.
At least I want the only reviewer late to the party on this one! I opted to just get base model and the price doesn’t offend me quite as much haha. I liked the DMG a lot more than expected.
There's something to be said for "being late" getting a device review out. Most if any problems should be taken care of by the time you get it and there's less confusion of what the product can and can not actually do by the time the average consumer would be able to get the device anyway.
I've been so tempted to get an Ayaneo handheld for a while now but could never justify it. Now that my handheld gaming device collection is pretty huge, I want devices that are more "endgame" and that will last me a long time instead of just marginally upgrading one or two handhelds every few months. So I ended up preordering one of these Pocket DMGs. Got the white one at the base price since it seemed pretty reasonable. I don't think you need anything but the base model for general gaming. I don't think I'd want to do anything like COD or Switch gaming on a device like this (due to both the screen aspect ratio and the lack of 2nd joystick). And the base model is currently $340. So it seems worth it for me. This will be my endgame vertical handheld. Won't feel the need to buy another one. I do kinda wish they dropped the SoC down slightly to make it a *bit* cheaper but I'm excited to get mine soon. This thing looks super pretty and all the reviews have been pretty positive.
There is sadly zero reason for this. Get the RG40V for the gameboy feel, and get the Retroid 5 for anything else. Now you still have about 300 bucks over this. Whats the point?
The thumb stick the trackpad and the fingerprint sensor are definitely some things on this device that we’re not necessary and could’ve made the device significantly cheaper if removed
Not to totally dismiss your concerns about the shoulder buttons, Wulff, because they very well could be defective, but if the goal of including extra shoulder was directly related to such a defect, you would think they would include shoulder buttons that were the same color as the default ones, so that you can utilize the original color scheme if you so chose. Of course, the shoulder buttons can still end up defective, so I'm not defending them, I just don't think that was their original intent.
with a large android based emulator, at that point I think I'd be better served buying a controller for my phone and carrying that around - if you have a nice phone, it probably would outperform this. I love my 35XXH because it's VERY small, very portable, and very small. Works great for retro stuff.

On an Android device with that much power I want to be able to play Android games, but I don’t want to play them on that screen. If I’m using that power to emulate PS2, i want the two analog sticks.
The price is insane, but to be fair, the stats are pretty stacked, and the interface is better than just using a phone. Just not a great device if you're only playing retro games anyway, however.
Don't see the market for this. I think most people wanting to play on a DMG form factor will want to play retro games that don't require this hardware. Pick up a Trimui Brick instead for $60.
The main appeal for me would be the OLED screen. But for OLED I can also pay 220 instead for a way more comfortabe RP5... I'd like this product at 200 euros, a Gameboy with OLED is pretty sick
you say that as if they are the same. the only thing they have in common is the form factor. its obvious they are drawn to the design and build quality.
I agree that I think that it should have been a much weaker, much cheaper device. With the control scheme let it cap at N64/Dreamcast/PSP, you know...single joystick systems (I know PSP would be bad for the screen). With that premium look and feel at a cheaper price I think it would have sold really well.
Thank goodness it has a OLED screen... I am PWM sensitive and can't use it, so that saved me $500. Would've bought one for sure if I could lol.... (bought an Odin 2 during the sale instead)
why would ''getting really bright'' be a tell that it is OLED when the largest weakness of OLED's typically is lower brightness... i mean, you obviously looked at the specs, but assuming you didnt, did the black levels and contrast not give it away?
Ahh man this did tickle me 😂 exceptional review and you are so consistent with making me laugh 😂 after i repeatedly pointed out to everyone how utterly stupid this handheld is, i still bought the 8gb version in white 😅 ive just accepted that im an idiot and im not responsible enough to handle my own finances.

I think it's cool, I love the DMG-style form factor and not just for nostalgic reasons, I just like the ergonomics of the screen being closer to eye-level. But the price is silly. You can now get a refurbished OLED Steam Deck for 440 dollars and a refurbished LCD Steam Deck for less than 300. If I can't play current-ish AAA PC games on it then it should be priced accordingly.
this looks like absolutely horrible form factor to play ps2/gc etc games in and if all they cared about was older systems... analogue pocket does it better
The battery life being that short on the Pocket DMG is kind of disappointing honestly. If we're going by it draining by about 10% in about 30 minutes on it's low power mode (albeit at full brightness as Wulff said), that's only about 5-6 hours during lighter use. The Odin 2 by comparison can get around 3 to 4 hours under heavy use, and can last at least 10 hours under medium to light use. Maybe the Odin 2 isn't the most fair comparison since they had some legroom to put in a big battery on the system, but I guess I'd expect a bit better from the Pocket DMG considering it's higher price overall.
Couldn’t they…I don’t know…make a $100 or sub $200 version of this that plays less consoles?? $500 is truly absuuurrrrddddd. They just reaaalllyyyy wanted a piece of that sweet Analogue money
