Hi Natalie ! I have lived on the west coast of Michigan my entire life and was tickled to hear you talk about Lake Michigan.....it is a misnomer that it is called a "lake" cuz it is enormous like an ocean (but fresh water)hence why it is one of the "Great" Lakes. So glad you got to see the beauty of it......the entire west coast of Michigan is bordered by Lake Michigan and in fact all of Michigan's coasts are bordered by 5 Great Lakes....Michigan, Superior, Huron, Erie, and Ontario . They are all BEAUTIFUL, and worth seeing. Come see us! ❤️ 💙 💜 💖 love your podcast!

When you come to Texas if you go to the Houston area you have to stop by Bruster's ice cream! The creamiest most yummy ice cream around. Their birthday cake flavor is my favorite but they're all so so good! They have a drive thru and a patio for Toaster.

Whenever you come to MN, I'm sure you'll already have specific places you want to go but I'd recommend Yarnology in Winona. Winona is such a cute little college town right by the Mississippi with a sugar loaf formation that's a fun, short hike and a beautiful view of the town at the top. And the store is in the really beautiful historical downtown, it has the loveliest ladies with a beautiful open space. I bet you'd like it!

#question Much love and luck to you, Kent and Toaster in this exciting new chapter of your lives!
I notice you've been doing a lot more LYS content. I love LYS tours as much as the next person, but I don't live in the US or buy hand dyed yarn, so I tend to gravitate to your videos that are more about projects, planning, organization, and more general knitting topics. I was wondering if you were still going to make the variety of content you made before, or if for the duration of your vanlife you will focus more on LYS tours and yarn crawls. I fully support it if thats the content your interested in making right now, but just wanted to know.

#question: Do you have yarn stores picked out/planned for each state you’ll be traveling or are you moreso out to discover as you go? If you do have them planned out, do you have any suggestions or know of any local yarn stores or dyers in the Beaumont, TX area? I’m STRUGGLING to find a local store to support rather than big box stores. I absolutely adore your videos and you inspire me so much to create! ❤

41:29 Hi there! I am having such a great (virtual) adventure with you in your van-travels, looking forward to each update. So, for the person who walked into the unfriendly/unencouraging yarn shop, that IS a bummer, but don’t be dissuaded from this wonderful craft! There are so, so many lovely small yarn shops with welcoming vibe and super helpful employees just waiting to see what’s on your needles or your wishlist. I love that you encouraged her without giving a lot of airtime to the ick. I also can recommend a great sweater pattern that uses fingering weight yarn held with mohair - it’s the very popular Love Note by Tin Can Knits! It does have a little lace portion in the yoke, which can be eliminated if she feels not ready to tackle it, but the pattern and website are wonderful, there are lots of tutorials to get you through any tricky parts, and the sweater is very wearable. So many people have made this sweater! You can look under the projects tab in Ravelry and be really inspired by the different colors and how it looks and fits on every body. Thanks again for your joyful, positive, informative and encouraging attitude.

Thank you so much for answering my question. I did take your advice and knit from the leg up to add the cuff. And the sock was originally knit cuff down, it looks great you can't even tell it had surgery. 🤣 The problem wasn't the fit. The problem was my mom wanted the same socks but I didn't have enough of the contrasting color for both pairs so I removed the cuff from mine to add to her pair so they could match and just picked a different color for myself. Also if anyone is interested the bakery bears has a Longtail cast off that works perfectly for toe up socks. That's what I used to cast off the new cuff and you can't even tell the difference.

Hi Nathalie! Your recently acquired skeins reminded me of a favourite Indiana sheep souvenir of mine: I got a ball of Under The Son Farm Shetland yarn, bought as a souvenir in Indiana when I lived there for 15 months around 2011. It was also from a woman's local farm, and milled/spun in Indina I'm quite sure. It became an all-time favourite since I discovered its many great properties! Finally last year I knit up half of the ball for the Reading Mitts pattern, and intend to make Cloudburst lacey mitts with the other half. Shetland fiber is truly wonderful and not to be feared for knitwear! Enjoy : )

Hi, Natalie. I am so happy you encouraged the girl who had a bad yarn shop experience. How sad! I, too, had a thing happen years ago with a now defunct yarn shop. In my case, I think the worker thought I was not worth dealing with unless I would be buying large quantities of their yarn.
I have since found two yarn shops within 30 minutes of me with owners and staff who are very helpful and encouraging, from the beginner to the most accomplished . . . whether they are selling one skein, multiples, or a stitch marker. I suspect they are so successful because they tune into the needs of the customer and make yarn art approachable.
Love, love, love your traveling yarn shop and van videos! Please give Toaster a chin 'hug' for me!

First of all, thanks so much for fixing the audio! I enjoy your channel and was bummed I couldn't hear it. Sound is great for this one. Mohair - I have some that a friend gave me and I haven't used it cause it is very coarse and I'm afraid it will itch. Now I'm thinking I should swatch it and wash it to see if the itch factor is still there before using it in a project. I try to use what the pattern calls for, but have had several really bad outcomes, even though I used the right size yarn and got gauge. I went so far as to buy a pattern book by the company that makes the yarn. So now I am wondering if its me or the yarn.... lol (Noro for those interested). I'm not bashing either yarn or pattern, just wondering if anyone else has had a similar problem. I have more yarn and another pattern picked but am leary about starting it. I'm not small, so maybe it is the size? It looks good on skinny models. Any help or suggestions are welcome, and thanks in advance to those who respond.

Good explanation about gauge. So many knitters are upset if they don’t get gauge with the needles recommended, they feel like they are failing somehow. That measurement is what the designer gets but you need to find the right needle/yarn combo to reach that number. Thanks. (Toaster looks a little unsettled but I’m sure he will adjust to life on the road quickly) 😊

I live in Indiana and i didn't know we had our own yarn crawl, that's cool to know. Granted I live up north closer to Lake Michigan and Chicago than to Nashville and Bloomington so either way it's a long drive to go to a yarn store. This whole series is going to be such a great resource for people who want to go to local yarn and fiber craft shops when they travel, I'm already learning so much about the yarn shop network in the US 😊 thanks for sharing your trip with us.
P.s. the hand spun you bought is gorgeous. I finished spinning my second drop spindle batch while watching this and it's so cool to hear about other people in the Midwest spinning and raising animals for fiber 🤩 it's my new craft obsession/dream to spin from an animals fleece that I raised and cared for.

I love color work and really want to make myself some garments by Caitlin Hunter - but I'm just terrible at it. My tension goes off the deep end when I try adding in a new color. I'll end up with big holes from trying to stay even, or puckering from pulling too tightly. Also yarn management is always a pain, my strands get all twisted. Any tips? 🙏

Hi Natalie, I was hoping you would be able to give me a suggestion on how to make a neck opening smaller for a sweater I am currently knitting. It is a top-down sweater with a narrow, 1-by-1 ribbed neckband (17 rounds) which has been folded over with a purled ridge at the halfway point. On trying the sweater on, I have realised the neckhole is simply too large. Do you have any suggestions on how to make it smaller? I wonder if it is possible to cut the yarn at the purled row at the top of the neckband and perhaps do a few rounds of double knitting before grafting the top of the neckband together again. Thank you!
