Video gives easy details about How to attempt hand pollination in Ramtori and Lauki. In cucurbits, male and female flowers are different but on the same plant. In ramtori sponge gourd male flowers are in clusters and have no swollen base whereas female flowers are single and with a long little ramtori like thick base. Same way in Lauki Bottle Gourd male flowers are thin at base whereas female flowers have a long small Lauki like basal part. We can easily distinguish the male flowers from female flowers. In nature the pollinators (Honeybees, Bumnblebees, Moths, Butterflies, other insects etc.) transfer the pollen grains produced by male flowers to the female flowers so that fertilization may occur resulting in the production of the fruits. Now, if your kitchen garden has little or no pollinators there will be lesser chances of pollen transfer from male flowers to female flowers and as a result there will be no fertilization and finally the female flowers will fall on ground. You will say that the gourds are not developing and falling immature. But actually, the pollination has failed to occur. Now, if there are fewer pollinators in or around your kitchen garden, you may attempt hand pollination to increase chances of fertilization and development of the fruits. The reasons for fewer pollinators include: You kitchen garden may be in roof top or in an urban area or there may be pollution etc. Now in hand pollination please keep inn mind that it is done when the flowers are fully open. For example in Ramtori, if you visit your kitchen garden early morning before sunrise, the flowers are open and you may attempt hand pollination there. But not in evening hours when the flowers are closed. Video gives a detailed account of various tips for hand pollination. Try it and see the results. I am learning how to speak in Hindi.
