- I'm back in the wonderful city of Glasgow and I've headed to the most iconic curry house in the city. Why? It's the oldest and the Shish Mahal is famous for being the Indian restaurant that invented the Chicken Tikka Masala!

@@GaryEats No way Gary, he is just an ex grocer who agrees with his mate - you know how tv works, if your face fits and you are "over the top", right place, right time you are in.
I don't think that you would get a look in, you are too pragmatic, kind and your depth of knowledge far above that on MC, you would be a major threat to them.
I do though think that you may be offered TV before long but as you say the journey of the channel is an inspiration to all us keyboard wannabees.

Great video, Gary. The Shish may be the oldest Indian restaurant still in existence in Glasgow but the Koh-i-Noor, which closed down a few years ago, also opened in 1964, perhaps slightly before the Shish opened. These two restaurants used to be across the road from each other in Gibson Street, next to Glasgow University, and were great favourites with students. I frequented both in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Like Rangers and Celtic, both had their fans. I was a Koh-I-Noor man. After watching your video my wife and I have decided to head off from Stirling to Glasgow for a meal at the Shish. - For nostalgia's sake as well as for the food.

I worked in Berkeley St for 15 years (left 5 years ago), and the Koh-I-Noor was my go-to for all things curry. Best curry house in Glasgow IMO, and much missed.
If you're wanting a really good curry in the town now, I'd head to either:-
-Mother India
-The Dakin
-The Dhabba
Go to Mother India Café, !!
By far best in Glasgow.
Lamb chops are outstanding
This is an old family favourite and a part of Glasgow legend. The Shish Mahal is one of the best Indian restaurants in the country. I recommend the lamb chops starter. Mr Ali sadly passed away a couple of years ago but his legacy lives on. Thank you so much for covering this restaurant Gary, so glad you enjoyed it.

Gary, you went to the Indian right on my home patch! 😂 Welcome to the West End. I hope you went to The Doublet for a drink afterwards. I remember the original Taj Mahal in Gibson Street in the early 80s before this current one opened.

quite a few curry dishes are unique to the UK
Most "Indian" dishes served by Indian Restaurants seem to have originated in the UK. I had never heard of a Balti dish until I started eating in Indian restaurants over here. In India a balti (bucket) is used to feed animals.

Thanks for coming north and showcasing some of our better places to eat. I'm originally from a fishing village in Fife, which is the bit to the north of Edinburgh that looks like a dogs head, and we still get some of the best fish in the country. By the way, in my part of Scotland a naan bread is referred to as an elephants lug (ear).

Now here's the thing. One of the few complaints I have about a lot of Indian curries is that they are often swimming in sauce. Sometimes disguising a lack of the meat/solid produce. So for me, I would be even more impressed by that Tikka Masala for being quite dense.

If you’re a spinach fan then their spinach dishes are quite mild. Lamb saag, or even spinach with cheese are delicious choices. They can do well seasoned flavored dishes without any chili or peppers. Eggplant is another non spicy favorite. We order it for the kids.

Gary I'm sure you and the cameraman couldn't of thought where the channel would of took you both when you started it the reason the adventure is continuing is only down to you and the cameraman's excellent videos and honest reviews and the fact that you both have stayed the same despite the success of the channel. I do think that must be the proper chicken tikka masala and everyone else has copied it. He even offered his own simplified explanation of how the entrée evolved: “Chicken tikka is an Indian dish. Excellent review Gary. It's crazy to think the best Indian meal I ever had was in Scotland back in 2003 at a family owned restaurant just outside of Edinburgh. It was a Buffett style set up with multiple dish offerings including deserts. The Chicken tika masala was incredible.

I can relate. I’m frequently up late at night (right now it is 03:15 am!) and I watch Gary and get cravings for some good food. But I live in a small town, and there are no restaurants open at this time! There’s only a convenience store that serves sandwiches! Not quite the same.

Have loved the' Shish Mahal' starting from way back in the Gibson St. days in the 70s. Mr Ali always welcomed us with great warmth and humour. To this day, I have my well worn, dog eared copy of 'The Shish Mahal Cook Book' which was on sale at the restaurant... and yes! the recipes were all the favourites and all authentic.

I loved going to the Kama Sutra Indian in Sauchihall St, which had a real warm Indian ambience about it but was revamped to a soulless place and probably had the weirdest onion bhaji ever.

Maybe a Christmas collab with Greeno Eats? I can imagine that today's masala has been tweeked here and there, and you were reading my mind when you said, it might be tasting different because it's closer to the original. My parents would drive from the south side of Glasgow to go there in the early 70s which was quite a journey back then. My mum would bring some pots and pans for them to fill with curry, rice, paratha and pakora etc…. Then my dad would have to be very careful driving home in case it spilled. ❤️🏴❤️

Gary my mate in New York came over with the intention of going to the shish mahal as he wanted to experience the CTM but we’d to alter our plans so went to Mowgli street food on st Vincent street instead-wasn’t disappointed in the slightest what a great night out that was, you should try if if you’ve time, which I doubt!! Another good honest review!

Original Shish Mahal was on Gibson Street, at that time a mecca for curry houses, round the corner next to the University. So it was a student favourite on a Friday night when pubs closed at 10. But good to see you doing the history. Next time in Glasgow try Mother India in Glasgow. Consistently rated top Indian restaurant for years

I knew that CTM was invented in Glasgow but I had no idea that the restaurant this happened in was still going, thanks for the education. Glasgow is fantastic for Indian food, there are so many good places to go and the quality is excellent, you could genuinely do a series of just Indian restaurants in Glasgow. I have never been to this restaurant but might do now that I know about it.

There's something strangely satisfying about watching someone eating and enjoying fine food. Weird, as I tuck in to my beans on toast, but still very satisfying! I think I would have really enjoyed this Indian meal as well as enjoying Gary's company.

Ha - looking forward to some fine Indian food ! / All looks very nice to me / Not had an Indian meal since late August! / Wow - that main dish, amazingly full and lush - what I like is there is loads of meat (chicken) in that dish, not just drowning in the sauce.
