Why Do Spiders Curl Up When They Die?

- When spiders die, their tiny legs curl up tight against their body, because spiders don’t use muscles to extend their legs. Instead, they have hydraulic legs!

This gives a new meaning to the phrase "curl up and die".

That’s exactly what the phrase means...
yeah!
More like "die and curl up"
Imagine if one of those giant spiders attacked Bilbo Baggins and he killed the spider with his sword, only to find out that the dead spider's legs started tightening around him...
It was Sam that poked the spider with Sting. Frodo was all wrapped up. 🙂🖖💕
OP mentioned Bilbo, so I think they were referring to The Hobbit and the lesser Giant Spiders of Old Murkwood, rather than Shelob.
I love the idea that someone would find him later that day in a permanent spider hug, miffed and bored, "Bout time someone showed up."
@@QuannanHade You're right. I forgot about the spiders in the Hobbit. I stand corrected.

Yeah, absolutely voracious ambush predators. I've seen them take down a full size shadow person in swarms. But if you leave them be they'll just munch on spiders, bugs and the odd lost sock.
You can kill them with a vacuum or broom. Or stomp them
Well, the "Vashta Nerada" are most definitely a real menace...

They are kinda cute. I have lots of spiders (the spider-daddy-longleg kind) in my flat because they never bother me (they always stay at the walls) and keep insects away. Also, they would freeze if I put them out in winter, so I feel sorry for them. The only annoying thing is that one lives in my bathtub, and I actually wanna take a bath again, but then I would have to destroy the net and rehome the spider :c
@@solar0wind Thank you for letting them live in your home, after all they evolved to be our friends and survive only/mostly in our homes. Also, spiders build webs all the time, you absolutely do not have to feel bad about destroying their webs, so you can easily relocate it and destroy the web if you want, only time it's not a good idea is if they are inside a sealed pocket and are molting, otherwise it is not harmful to the spider in any way.
@It’s Lilith You what?! How did that happen? I'm curious how such a incident can even happen.
"Spiders' legs are basically a series of little tubes."
So does this mean that Senator Ted Stevens mixed up webs with legs?
No, it means that Ted Stevens was a robot spider

I know this because I used to live on a ranch with a lot of barn cats. A lot of them died being exposed to the elements, eaten, or being ran over.
Use to be and still am freaked out by spiders, but over the years being 27 now,I've gotten better with it and even respect the little guys,I won't kill them and usually let them be and even though they creep me out,I also love observing them and gotten better with identifying them.
awesome! Check out SpiderID.com we're a site that identifies worldwide spiders from submitted photos. We also answer spider questions and help arachnophobes fall asleep when they're panicking in the middle of the night. The site is completely run by volunteers who can work any time or amount. No experience is required, we check each other's answers and teach each other how to do (scientifically improper) photo identifications. We aren't a nonprofit or for-profit, just a free-floating "series of tubes."

Literally watching Eight Legged Freaks right now. The simulation is glitching.
What simulation? What was the episode(movie?) about? A specific type of arachnid or arachnids in general?
It’s a movie about giant spiders lol
Fyi. Our hands increase the strength of their grip by putting the muscles in the arm and linking them to the fingers with tendons. This allows much bigger muscles than could fit in the fingers to move them.

So this indirectly means that it aint dead till its legs are completely curled... good to know
😂
Some of them pull their legs in close when they’re scared, seeming like a tiny pebble. When they first die, they go limp. Their legs curl in when rigor mortis sets in, and their bodies dry out, which takes a little while.
@Nathan Quinn It's the same as when you let your hands completely relax. Your fingers curl inwards toward the palm because the flexor muscles in the arm connected to the fingers are much stronger than the extensor muscles that let you move your fingers away from your palm.
I am today years old, at the age of 34, having the following thought for the first time:
_spiders are awesome_
"Just imagine that it's legacy is [the end of humanity]"
Spiders also curl up in ball when they are scared or sleeping.
The cross orb weaver for example will go and hide somewhere and roll up in a ball (just like in the video) when they are either scared or sleeping.
You can witness this yourself. If you go up to a spider like a cross orb weaver and touch it (either with your finger or something else), it will bring it’s legs in and curl up into a ball.
That's the species, Araneus diadematus, that comes to my mind when I think of a spider curled up to sleep too. The first one I ever saw had tied a curled leaf around her body like a sleeping bag or . It was seeing that resting spider looking so cute that got me really interested in spiders. Later, I had an orbweaver in my yard that used something different every day, like fern fronds and flower bracts, as a bed.
Man. I always thought that I had heard this in a dream or something, that it wasn't real. I've told people spiders use hydraulics in their legs and no one has ever believed me, so I started to believe I was wrong. Guess I wasn't wrong at all.
or the dream isn't over
Well technically correct hydraulics isn't intuitive to the average layman.
It's where Wild, Wild, West got the inspiration for Dr. Loveless' mecha-spider
I thought it was a well known fact that spiders have hydraulic legs. Very surprised at how many do not know this.
When I read the title I immediately said “hydraulics!” but didn’t realize how rigor mortis factored in. I love learning new things like this!!!
For some reason this made me sad
Spider bros :(
But remember: Awesome Giant Spider-bot.
Ya know, it made me a little sad too jimboleen been. Spiders always get the bad PR. Like the Bat, the Rat and the Pitt Bull. They are underdogs.
It probably reminded you that the spiders and you share the same fate.
This was great. Very informative, as always. Thanks, too, for featuring my favorites--an orb weaver and a jumping spider.
Why do roaches always die upside down?
I think there was a scishow about this. I think it was because bugs are top-heavy
Also the leg thing again. When they die their legs curl up a bit creating a spherical shape on their underside so it kinda rolls them over.
Another one of those, as long as they're dead, I don't care questions.
@@yonatanbeer3475 Which is also why live beetles and turtles have great difficulty getting onto their feet when their backs are to the ground.
This was so much more interesting than I expected.
Isn't this a general arthropod thing though? Or something is similar is going on with insects, right?
Nope. Other arthropods have the normal set of flexor and extensor muscles.
@@francoislacombe9071 then why do all the bugs and flies curl their legs up like that? seems like the opposite is happening than with mammals for example.
@@Ralesk I don't know. Do they though? I do recall spider legs curling up when they die, but I don't recall insect legs doing the same thing.

Might've been worth noting how their "hearts" are a fully integrated component of their mobility system, which in turn is dependent on their book lungs. Spiders have such amazing physiology. I think it's that kind of biological perfection and efficiency that fuels humans' general phobia of spiders (I used to be an extreme arachnophobe as a kid, but overcame my fear through morbid academic curiosity).
people are afraid of spiders because most of the world has deadly ones. our genetic distaste of these monsters doesnt come from hunter gatherers knowing they used hydraulics.
Successful people don't become that way overnight. What most people see at a glance-wealth, a great career, purpose is the result of hard work and hustle over time. If you want to be successful have the mindset of the rich, spend less and invest More. Don't give up your dreams.

My wife found a spider in the process of dying, and the legs were already curled. It was caught in a dust bunny. She used tweezers and a cotton swab to disentangle it, then got some water to its mouth. Next morning we were able to release it, none the worse for wear.
Wow! Awesome spider rescue action!

*NO THANKS, I'LL PASS*
We're ignoring the big household spiders at our residence, but once in a while I still see one stringy carcass on the floor.
Good question!
I once accidently washed a spider into my sink but managed to grab it before it got washed down the drain. It was curled up as if dead, but it had only been immersed a few seconds. I put it on some paper towel to soak up water on/in its' body. After several seconds its' legs shot back out like they were spring loaded, and it ran off. It must have repressurised instantly.
Perfect Christmas holiday topic - death and rigor mortis of spiders!
There was a giant wolf spider that gave birth on our patio and it curled up presumably dead for a day; I even handled it a little. Then after 24 hours or so it sprang to life and crawled off into the grass
SciShow is my spirit animal.
Some spiders use that pose to fake their deaths. I’ve seen it twice. Once I was so sure it was dead because I left it alone and hadn’t moved, and then poked it and it still wouldn’t move. Finally I took a pair of tweezers and picked it up and then finally it uncurled and tried to run.
