  • I've been asked about the back mount I use in my Insta360 X3 windfoiling videos, eg

There's many ways to make one of these and I've seen more professional efforts than mine [#Devan] but this one, made from bits & pieces I had, is working well so far. Here are some notes on it's construction & use of the camera with this setup.
The base is made from 2 bits of marine ply and an old broom handle I drilled a 10cm deep hole into. The 3 parts were screwed & Gorilla glued together. I then wrapped it in a few layers of glass and coated the inside of the bolt holes and tube with epoxy.
The pole is a 1.1m length of 13mm sail batten into which I epoxied a full length of 10mm dowel to hopefully give it more strength. The bolt at the top of the pole is screwed and glued into the dowel.
I wrapped some pvc tape around the base of the pole to make a snug fit in the base.
A length of kite line runs from the base up & around the pole and is tied to the bolt as the X3 (& X2) cameras don't have a safety lead attachment point unfortunately. The line isn't loose and is removed along with the pole by the camera stitching software.
The base is permanently attached via stainless bolts to an old waist harness.
The tube in the base is angled at 45°. This together with the 1.1m pole length have worked out pretty well for water starting. If I keep the sail a little above head height it clears the camera. There's still plenty of length & height to create a drone type effect.
I have the Insta GPS Action Remote which will hopefully make activating the camera from my wrist possible (as well as it overlaying speed, location, course etc data into videos). I had trouble getting it to work consistently with the X2. Hopefully it'll be better with the X3...
