I'm 55. I totally remember grunge (early 20s) and the grunge bands. Flannel shirts became a big thing and loose jeans with rips in them. Look up a pic of Kurt Cobain - epitomy of grunge. Academia is like prep school style... ivy league universities, rich kids but from like the 20s or 30s... a lot of Ralph Lauren could be academia style. Modern Preppy is Lily Pulitzer or Tuckernuck. Preppy was my generation. Middle & High school in early 80s. My school was reply and I think of wide wale pants with pink and green together - with animals embroidered - like whales and pigs! But the new preppy you showed is a major fail. Nothing preppy about those looks.
