Wow, Richardson sounds more aristocratic Received Pronounciation than he did as Francis Urquhart in "House of Cards". Amazing! I could listen to him for hours, what a speaking voice he had!!

What a marvelous person! Absolutely the finest F. U. around. Kevin Spacey cannot hold a candle to him!

I Agree! The BBC production was so excellent that I had ZERO interest in the US Netflix version. We Americans have no sense of subtlety/underplay. I hated the thought of Kevin Spacey chewing up the scenery (though he's generally a perfectly competent actor). After seeing (and hearing!) Richardson as Francis Urquhart, it made me shudder to think of anyone else attempting it.

Although Ian Richardson was perfect as F.U., I think Kevin Spacey did a marvellous job - as good as any American could in that setting. He even developed a sort of aristocratic southern accent. The writing in that series was unkind to him. Also, he diddled boys.

Ian Richardson's VOICE is his greatest tool, I think. It is so melodious, even mellifluous, so no matter what accent he adopts, his voice carries the day. Still, his accents on the program were, need I say so, Superb. Thanks for a lovely conversation. He was without a doubt, a GREAT actor, including the villain, Bill Hayden, in "Tinker, Tailor, Soldier Spy." I was very sad to hear of his death.

I moved to France as an English assistant in 1974. I was supposed to spend 2 hours a week doing recordings but was let off as nobody could understand my Fife accent. When I began to work with a tourist company in the same town, I made a great effort to lose my accent, but even now, people know I am Scottish. It has been a great benefit over the years as the French love the Scots.

One of the all time greatest! His F.U. will go down as finest drama achievements, easily comparable to Shakespeare roles. That's why I have never watched US version of "House of Cards" and have no desire to do so. BBC drama was classic.

Sellers did lots of Indian accented comedic characters for the Goon Show, with Spike Milligan who was born in India. Peter was a sponge for accents and he did his WWII service with the RAF in India. So, Richardson’s compliment is not without foundation.

What an exceptionally talented and humble fellow Ian was. Such a great loss to us all. In his early days known principally for his bravura theatre performances of Shakespeare characters he is probably best known for two great roles from arguably two of TVs greatest series first as the mole , Bill Hayden opposite Alec Guinness I'm Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and his celebrated lead role as the Machiavellian figure Sir Francis Urquhart in House of Cards , s study I'm ruthless ambition if eber there was and a massively successful role that ran to 3 series based on Michael Dobbs character, in To Play the King and The Final Cut. One of my favourite though relatively minor film roles was opposite Michael Caine and Ray McNally in Frederick Forsyth film adaptation of ,'The Fourth Protocol' where he plays very convincingly a spy master and senior member of British intelligence's MI6, and his presence in every sense is both memorable and rivetingly entertaining ! I also loved him in the excellent TV series 'The Murder Rooms,' and his studied portrayal of Dir Joseph Bell. the Scottish clinical psychologist upon whom Conan Doyle it's believed based his character Sherlock Holmes !
RIP Sir Ian, you are greatly missed !

Richardson had such a brilliantly idiosyncratic accent. People say it was RP, but it really sounds so incredibly Scottish. Whether the pronunciation of "o" as in _good_ as "or" or the "ay" in _May_ as almost "ear", the Glasgwegian in him bleeds through mellifluously.

Hah! I just listened to another portion of this interview in a different YTube video, and Richardson says of acting "less is ALWAYS more." Very interesting interview, especially the Nehru bit. Here's the tryst with destiny speech - ua-cam.com/video/U6gPjV229tM/v-deo.html. One thing is slightly annoying - at 3:29 Richardson says "got a little hindu" into your voice. What precisely is that?

@@sarah_pings_witherby I'm afraid you completely missed the point. What exacly is a Hindu accent? Are you saying that Indian/South Asian Muslims (or people of other religions like Jains, Buddhists, Sikhs) speak differently from Indian/South Asian Hindus? Or maybe, Hindus from Indonesia/Guyana/Trinidiad/Mauritius/USA sound different from their countrymen. If not, why say Hindu when you mean Indian?
There is variance in accents across India/South Asia, but the variance is by region, level of education and class/strata of society (just like the UK), but not by religion!
It is as misleading as calling RP an Anglican accent, a Brooklyn accent a Jewish accent, or an Irish accent a Catholic accent!
