Another Earth was a fantastic movie. Totally engrossing, shame that it doesn’t have more fans.

Slaughterhouse 5 is such a great book, so it goes.

“If I hadn’t spent so much time studying Earthlings,” said the Tralfamadorian, “I wouldn’t have any idea what was meant by ‘free will.’ I’ve visited thirty-one inhabited planets in the universe, and I have studied reports on one hundred more. Only on Earth is there any talk of free will.” -Slaughterhouse 5

I grew up reading anthologies of both mystery and science fiction short stories, and it was a great way to discover new writers and investigate a range of ideas and moods. You might try some anthologies - I prefer those that aren't themed, as were more common in the old days, although these days the Best Of ... annuals are generally pretty good. Just a thought. Wonderful commentary, you did MKV's tag proud. Brava.

Thank you for the suggestion and for watching. I have been reading a lot of poetry this year. I think next year I'll focus on short stories.

Great tag! I would say that Slaughterhouse Five traverses multiple genres and can definitely qualify as science fiction. I've heard Ray Bradbury wrote some excellent short stories - his Martian Chronicles, which I'm planning to read soon, is a good place to start.

That's a nice tag. Your comments about Slaughterhouse Five, particularly it not being mentioned much as a sci-fi book, caught my attention. Before I read it, I was aware of and heard discussed things like anti-war themes, philosophical implications, the Dresden firebombing of course in the book, but not very much about the sci-fi aspect for some reason. Then I read it, and there are aliens, and time travel, and a whole vein of exploring how time might be perceived when experienced in a non-linear fashion. It was a whole, fascinating aspect to the book that I hadn't heard about until I read the story. And, similar to your related experience, I still don't hear many talk about it as a sci-fi book, other than as a kind of aside to classify genre.

I loved this book and need to read it again. I wonder if it’s because it has been banned at points that there is so little talk of it. I think the aliens also represent a type of utopia where there is no emotion. It’s such a strange story, but so filled with profound contrasts and tragedy and levity at the same time. Thank you for watching.

Lots of Vonnegut's books have science fiction elements.

I always thought Slaughterhouse-Five as a psychological fiction where his way to deal with mental breakdown is causing the aliens and time travel.
I don't do short stories or poetry either... excepting horror short stories. I recommend HP Lovecraft.

My favorite short story writer is Fredric Brown, if you like Twilight Zone type stories with a crazy twist, you can't go wrong with him. I recommend you look up Nightmares and Geezenstacks.

The struggle is real for me with short stories. Lol! I’ve read some Margaret Atwood short stories and a few Matheson. 🫣 it’s ridiculous. Thank you for the recommendations.

@@ItsTooLatetoApologizeBrown, if you don't know who he is, wrote the famous star trek episode "Arena" from the Original series. Yes, Brown is my favorite, I've tried to find other authors with stories that give me the same "sting" that his stories do. But I don't think there is anybody that was able to write a short story like he could, with a twist at the end you don't see coming. Sometimes you're reading a story that's only one page long and you think to yourself," what can he possibly do in one page that going to surprise me." And then Wham! He hits you from left a direction you don't see coming. if you read and like the short story collection I also recommend a book called From These Ashes, which are his complete sci Fi short stories. He also has mystery short stories, but I still haven't dived into that book.

A great concise science fiction book is 2001: A Space Odyssey by Arthur C. Clarke. The book is less mysterious but no less fascinating than the movie.
Philip K. Dick's books are all worth reading. A fantastic science fiction writer.
Slaughter House Five is fantastic! Cat's Cradle is great too! Lots of science fiction in much of Vonnegut's books.

I do have 2001: A Space Odyssey on my TBR shelf. I liked Cat's Cradle but Slaughter House Five was just a huge WOW for me. I really have to get on that Vonnegut collection of short stories after I work my way through this collection of poetry I'm currently reading. Thank you for watching.

My favorite sci fi novel is Hyperion by Dan Simmons, it's told in a Canterbury Tales format with a frame story and the stories of 6 more characters. Just reread it recently along with the sequel Fall of Hyperion and it was even better than i remember. Good video!

It's also an echo of The Torrents of Spring by Hemingway in that Simmons presents a pastiche of the major SF writers' styles, before he presents his own, meant to supersede what has gone before.

Lol, I was going to recommend Vonnegut's short stories. I liked them better than the two books of his I read. Perhaps because it gets to the premise faster. I think the beauty of short stories is the negative space, the anticipation of everything left unsaid but required to get to the current scene. I'd heard much invoked by Hemingway's 6 word short story that is probably often talked about in your industry.
Philip K Dick has a lot of great short stories and although not strictly scifi, I found The Office of Historical Corrections a good read.

Thank you for your recommendations. I need to apply myself to that short story collection by Vonnegut. I like the green at you think about the negative space in a story. I’ve always thought of the negative space as pacing. Thank you for watching.

I learned about the negative space from a critic reviewing Hemingway's baby shoes story. Occasionally I notice we are thrown into a middle of a short story and we bring our own assumptions to their history. And then if we reread it later in the year or discuss with a friend, we've filled in the negative space differently

I remember the War of the Worlds TV show. That was so weird. Remember the bizarre turn season 2 took? And damn them for killing Ironhorse! Anyway, thanks so much for doing this! I really appreciate it. Oh, and read those Ray Bradbury stories!
