- Mozart’s glorious opera is brought enchantingly to life in David McVicar’s production with beautiful designs by John Macfarlane. Roderick Williams sings 'Der Vogelfanger bin Ich ja'.
The Magic Flute is available to watch now - along with over 60 other extraordinary productions - on Royal Opera House Stream. Watch the whole performance now at www.roh.org.uk...
Mozart wrote Die Zauberflöte (The Magic Flute) for a suburban theatre in Vienna, the Theater auf der Wieden. He drew on the magical spectacle and earthy comedy of popular Viennese theatre. As well as being a comedy, The Magic Flute is an expression of Mozart’s profound spiritual beliefs: Enlightenment concerns with the search for wisdom and virtue are at the heart of this enchanting tale. The Magic Flute was an instant success with audiences and Mozart’s supposed rival Salieri described it as an ‘operone’ - a great opera.
David McVicar’s classic production embraces both the seriousness and comedy of Mozart’s work. The audience is transported to a fantastical world of dancing animals, flying machines and dazzlingly starry skies. The setting provides a wonderful backdrop for Mozart’s kaleidoscopic score, from the Queen of the Night’s coloratura fireworks to Tamino and Pamina’s lyrical love duets and Papageno’s hearty, folksong-like arias.

That bird though. Not chuckled this much in ages.
As a german, I could barely tell he isnvt a german speaker (or at least not native). Very impressive!
I think it’s easier to hide an accent while singing.
@@vitus6302 I can still hear it from most german singers.
Every opera singer at least knows how to pronounce the words in Italian and German
you'd think that, but I have seen the contrary@@c08lam
Love everything about this. The wonderful singing, the minimalist staging, the simple costumes and colors, the puppetry and the clever staging. Just wonderful.
Been playing this on the clarinet. Such a jolly, catchy tune.
I have it on my washing machine🐦 it plays a few bars of this tune when the cycle has finished 💛 This is my favourite oper of all.🧚♀️🌻
I'm a kid with a fuckin' poor backround. Today I went to the opera for the first time in my live to see the "Zauberflöte" and I'm still blasted.. can't wait to go there again
So glad you loved it! I fell in love with opera at a young age by watching a video of the entirety of Le Nozze di Figaro with Cecilia Bartoli as Susanna and, of course, the incomparable Frederica von Stade as Cherubino. Keep going to the opera whenever you can!
Yay a new Opera fan!!
I just can' t decide: who is the most fascinating. The birdcatcher, his singing, or this incredible birdie. Oooh and the costumes!! Kudos to the whole ensemble. :-)
I agree, totally!
This is by far my favorite opera.
This is my first time watching something about the magic flute, this is amazing!!
How the hell did that ostrich learn to ride a mini unicycle?
I don't know, for godness sake!
@SprNva101 but, you know, there is always someone, that thinks that musicians must know.
Enjoy the comedy (that is the Beauty of Singspiel)
Its magic!!!!
Fantastisch! Grossartig! Was fuer eine Stimme!😍
His German is incredible!
@Nicholas Ennos Well, I am German that´s why I think I can analyse pretty well whether someone sounds Geman or not. And maybe Mozart wanted it to sound different or he may have spoken in a different accent but that does not alter the fact that his German sounds very good in comparison to other opera singers who have done that piece.
@Nicholas Ennos And I may also add that the Austrian accent is indeed different that the standard German but it is still the same language. Besides, Mozart lived and worked in the 18th century, a time where well-born, noble peolple did not speak with an accent. And his pieces were written for such an audience since he worked for the Kaiser.
@Nicholas Ennos Austria is German. Fuck off with your anglo problem inventing.
Ehm, no, this is exactly how it should be
@@lisa-maria7059 i speak Swiss-german 😂👌
One of the greatest comic relieves of all time!
His voice is soooooo mesmerizing and hypnotizing.
Mozarts musics…is the truth … its life….
Roderick Williams is amazing, his German is perfect.
Couldn't agree more. I was lucky enough to get to page-turn for his piano accompanist at a concert he gave last November - one of the biggest honours of my life!
Lyrics:
Hermoso 👏👏👏👏
Vogelfänger bin ich ja,
Stets lustig, heissa, hoppsassa.
Ich Vogelfänger bin bekannt
bei Alt und Jung im ganzen Land.
Weiß mit dem Locken umzugehn
Und mich aufs Pfeifen zu verstehn.
Drum kann ich froh und lustig sein,
Denn alle Vögel sind ja mein.
2. Strophe
Der Vogelfänger bin ich ja,
Stets lustig, heissa, hoppsassa.
Papageno is just one of the most amusing characters. This performance is great and hilarious.
When I read the script (I couldn't differentiate between the German singing) I felt that Mozart put a lot of his own character into Papageno.
The witty comebacks and the dedication and the subtle jokes in between, I think a lot of his character came from Mozart himself.
💯
I'm german and find his German-language performance is very good

Beautiful performance ❤️🎉😻😘
The bird OWNED.
Absolutely fab. I adooooore Mozart❤️
This was my grandmother’s favorite opera when she was alive. She really enjoyed it and I think it has a wonderful story that’s very fun for people of all ages. When I was a young kid, she got me a VHS cassette in black-and-white of this opera and I used to sing this song :-) it brings back so many good memories.
On s'en fous de ta vie.

@@mustafabuljko4335 oh goodness
Is anyone here because of the Bugs Bunny WWII propaganda cartoon with him selling ice cream with Grenades to the soldiers from the axis powers or the jumping dolphin puppet from Baby Einstein’s Baby Mozart?
F in the chat because the full opera was taken down 😔
Why
Every German knows the lyrics to this song 😂😂
I’ve never experienced a melody like this
THAT'S BABY MOZART

Hohe Kunst.
Das meistaufgeführte Singspiel der Welt.
Best song from the opera IMO. The flute bits make it and give personality to the type of character Papageno is
*sad bird noises*
Other than that, this is good.
When David Hume becomes the birdcatcher! LOL :))
I love Opera, but I think even not find of opera would love it!
What is the name of the singer and where is he from? I haven’t seen him before? The performance is beautiful

It's beautiful!
I know.
Ok but the bird puppeteer was lovely to look at
Listening to this took me back to my school days. I was somehow talked into taking part in a dance performance of this. Probably, it was because I was the only boy that actually enjoyed our weekly dance lessons. I was the bird catcher. It was a shock when I realised that it was almost 60 years ago!
This music is just makes me happy.
Toujours à la recherche du grand œuvre ?
it was very carming and nice
Text pls :(
I guess the bird costume was only available in a xxxxxxxxxxs

I love this so much!
So when are you gonna start?
is ther a full recordng with these singers?
No, but I would wholeheartedly recommend either of Bohm's studio recordings (Decca and DG), Klemperer's or Karajan's first offering.
@@xxsaruman82xx87 ok, i collect opera recordings, and i was just wondering if anyone downloaded the livestream.
@@OccyDaBoss Sorry.

Yay
😌🥰
The music is absolutely beautiful. But am I the only one who found the lyrics a bit... problematic? Especially the later part when he was daydreaming.
No clue what he's saying but do you actually expect a song written in the 1700s to be politically correct? 🤦♂️
He wants a wife but all he knows how to do is catch birds so he compares catching birds and caging them to catching women, but he only wants one companion, so he'd trade all of the others for sugar and give it to one woman.
I would really like to swap you with two cows, 4 pigs and a camel. Could you please communicate this offer to your parents?

Is he the birdcatcher so i'm Santa Claus😂
Lovely! Wish I had seen this when it was on
