  • This lawn was renovated about 4 or 5 weeks ago (video of the renovation is here: • Timelapse lawn renovat... ).
Since it was done we have had numerous have downpours of rain. This year especially has been very very wet, prolonged rain from way back in September last year!).
so it's no surprise that the rain has affected things and washed some of the seeds away leaving a number of horrible looking patches.
In this video I fix those patches and discuss the way forward.

The following tools are what I personally use during my lawn renovations:

I have also had to reseed some of my lawn post renovation, because of a sloping edge and excess rain.
Can I ask, does the compost spreader use more compost than just spreading by hand/rake? do you think it is worth the investment for a domestic lawn lover?

You can only do what you can do. Crappy new build clay soil, crappy wet weather. The odds where against you.
I'd of done exactly the same as you. But maybe put a thin layer of compost down after the gypsum and before the Fert and seed.
I've started using fleece every time now. But still have to go back and over seed from time to time.
BTW. That premium compost looks great. I generally use miracle grow. But even that is very hit and miss with lots of unusable bits in it.

If you scratch in and top dress the seeds... Wait a week and lightly scratch in some more, and then a third time you should be able to spread were necessary. Top dressing should be simply a handfull of peat moss watered in. Weather is a bitch! I feel your pain! That compost is a bit of coin due to rain... that's why I use peat moss. cheap but effective.

I have tried these methods for patches after excessive mole damage and dog pee patches. I find the best solution without additional watering , is the Elton John hair transplant method.
Heavy tine coring removal, followed by seeding and brushing into the 1 inch deep holes, followed by top dressing brushed into the holes. Water once and forget except in a drought. Seed stays put and soon spreads and is not too shallow sown as to dry out with a drying wind. The best top dressing must contain humus as most commercial compost dries out. Really enjoy your videos. Lawns can be a real pain without cheap water. This method helps in heavy clay drying soils as you are creating mini enviroments of the right soil for the new seedlings until they can cope. All the best.

I forgot to state what you already know. With dog pee patches , i tine core to a greater deapth after dead thatch removal and dress first to bring the holes to a shallower depth, then seed and final dress. This works against extreme alkalinity of dog pee. If i could train the dog to pee on the weeds i would have cheap weed killer whilst further training him to pee into a water butt i would have great lawn fertilizer but thats not going to happen !!

Hi Shaun. We have aerated and scarified our front lawn, and removed tons of weeds using a weed puller. I used Resolva Lawn weed killer and then Miracle Gro 4 in 1. It killed some weeds but not a lot. The lawn currently looks like a bomb site with large craters! 😂 Next job is to level, seed patches and compost. Just wondering if I need to use a pre seed treatment, even though it is only patches that I am seeding? Also, do you mow around the patches while waiting for the seed to grow? Just waiting for the rain to stop so that we can restart! It’s gonna be a gorgeous weekend here in Cornwall so ready to crack on. 😊☀️

    • @LawnRight
      @LawnRight  4 місяці тому +1

Hi.. Main thought is to make sure you didn't apply the weedkillers within the last 6 weeks.. Weedkillers and seed don't go well together.. So if it was 6 weeks ago I'd say go for it.. If you weedsprayed or used 4 in 1 you need or make sure you don't seed for 6 weeks after applying those.. You can manage without any fert if it's easier, just ensure regular watering.. I'd scalp it all before seeding so you can giv the patches. A good 2 weeks before putting a mower on the lawn

i mean its a private personal question but im curious to know how much a reno costs like this, i know the compost and seed etc is not cheap, then all your tool wear, van, petrol, labour and experience cant be cheap so i expect the customer paid good money for it, so its fair if they wasnt happy with the result regardless that the issue wasnt your fault. but its a pain having to go back and basically do it all again for free. id defo fleece on the smaller lawns atleast if i were you, when pricing the job i wouldnt even give them a option id just price it in.

I did two patches three weeks back, big patches where there was 2 box bushes that fied this year. I suppose about 3 feet by two feet.
Filled in up to grass level, tamped it down, raked it get a tilth then seeded and covered with top soil.
Weather man said sun and light cloud for 4 days but had dome fleece do watred well and pegged out the fleece, glad i did as it lashed it down next morning😲
Now both patches have 40 mm of young grass👍

It's always frustrating when that happens, especially if you're using expensive seed. I appreciate how you apply a wetting agent; I do the same for my clients' lawn renovations. It's very beneficial for hydrophobic soils, as it improves water retention and, most importantly, reduces crusting and puddling.

Same thing happened to me around 2 months ago (Texas). I was trying out this seed fabric called growtrax and we got record rainfall three weekends in a row. It washed away most of the seeds that hadn’t germinated and established themselves. I’ve got big bald patches as well. The one silver lining is that in one area the fabric was loose and a bunch of seeds fell out in a pile. I had left it as is and it ended up growing in a very thick and healthy patch, the first such I had seen in this lawn. I’ve now decided to add enriched topsoil and level out the yard while overseeding in the traditional manner. I’m just waiting because we’ve had to deal with getting a new HVAC system installed and I don’t like overlapping big projects. It’s Bermuda so the heat shouldn’t be an issue (for the grass if not the owner.)

This happened to me last year, seeded and overseeded and the lot got washed away, the following week after I had calmed down, I did it again and blow me down, it hammered it down and washed that away as well.
This year I used a fleece just in case and it didn’t really rain lol.

What fleece did you use? The birds have been at mine as well as the rain

I use fleece on all my seeding jobs even small patches
I get my fleece from B&Q you also need wire pegs to hold the fleece down I get the pegs from and store
      Hope this is helpful
