    Are the Viltrox 23mm 1.4 and Viltrox 33mm 1.4 lenses perfect for shooting video on FUJI X? A lot of videographers are thinking they could be. They are wrong, but also right. In this video I'll share two reasons they don't work great, but six reasons they do work great. Several are compelling reasons over the current Fuji fast primes like the XF 23mm 1.4 and the XF 35mm 1.4.

    That’s one thing I really really don’t like about modern lenses in general. The focusing ring & aperture ring don’t actually physically move the lens elements or the aperture blades. They send a signal to the camera, which sends a signal back to the lens to move the focusing motor/aperture control module. I find the manual focusing especially to be rather obtuse compared with using vintage glass.

    It's great to have choice - this is what I missed with Fuji as 3rd party lenses were practically non-existent (yeah, Zeiss lenses with a horrible price don't really count). I hope Sigma also enters eventually with their APS-C lineup. Also Tokina lenses will be released in the autumn, with the same lens design as Viltrox, but probably with a better quality control and external design but they will be more expensive.

      Think out of the box. I just bought a Hasselblad lens on ebay for 400. That's Zeiss at it's best, and since the throw is bigger than the Fuji sensor, you're getting the very best of the lens on the sensor.

    I just got myself a Fujifilm xt1, coming from Sony a7 im quite excited to get into the Fuji system at last, since I didnt enjoy Sony whatsoever. Ill be adapting Some vintage glass for the moment, but my plan is yo acquire a 23 and 35 f2 alongside the 56 1.2. Excellent review sir. I have both of the Viltrox's and both of the equivalent F2 Fuji's. Andrew, your review is spot on. I find that I can really smooth out the focus on the Fuji F2 lenses by slowing it down in the custom focus settings. On the Viltrox lenses no matter how low you go on focus speed - they always do that snapping behavior when they continuous autofocus and acquire focus. I am using these on the XT4.

      Same behavior with the Viltrox 85mm. That's why for video, I think the Viltrox is only good manually focused or if you're shooting a talking head.

    Hey Andrew! Just wanna let you know Viltrox has new firmware 1.07 yesterday! They claimed that it fixed the too snappy video focus transition problem, as well as the sudden focus lost issue. (see below). Would you mind quickly testing this again and let me know in the comment? I am wondering if I should get the 23mm Viltrox or the Fuji F2 23mm. Many Thanks! Will that change your conclusion about these two lens for video as comapred to the Fuji F2 Prime? Espeically the 23mm Viltrox vs 23mm F2 Fuji?

    I think the biggest reason most of us were looking at viltrox lenses is the focus breathing. Making a video when your camera is constantly saying "hey what's that over there? lets go check it out for a couple seconds for no reason" is impossible. I don't know too many people that change their aperture during filming. It's not the easiest way to adjust exposure and it will throw your field of view around. Better to adjust iso or use a variable nd filter. IF you do adjust aperture it's probably only a couple stops anyway, so the stepping won't be a dealbreaker.

    I own two Viltrox lenses for Fujifilm, the 85mm f/1.8 and 33mm f/1.4. Both very capable sharp and fast AF lenses for stills. I also own all of the Fujifilm fixed focal length lenses and they have less CA than the Viltrox do. You can repair the CA in post of course. The new firmware version 1.0.6 seems to improve the aperture issues somewhat.

    Thanks for the video.
    In deed I've been keeping my eye on that 33mm..ever since it was rumoured. I still have my doubts though..as it is much bigger in size, compared to the 35mm 1.4 fujinon.
    What do you reckon?
    Are you not keeping them due to that reason too...or is it an amalgamation of several factors?
    I'm a still in the lookout for a tele prime, for my Fuji system.
    Thanks again for the video, and the data you offered us, on these lenses.
    PS: I noticed that your mic(s) have quite a bit of noise. (I mean in the 1st part of the video, and not when you're doing the sound test on the AF motors..naturally.)
    What are you shooting with? It seems to being the camera's preamps that are not doing a great job.
    Its either that or the mic itself.
    You're not using an external audio recorder right?

    I don't know if it's been mentioned already but if you don't want the exposure to do the stepping adjustment, you can just set the shutter speed and aperture manually and let ISO go auto. You should expose for the bright scene first though with the help of an ND filter. Useful if you have a shot that requires you to go from a bright to dark environment (v.v.).

    • @manwhalejoe6962
      @manwhalejoe6962 4 роки тому +5

      I would humbly suggest the XC f2. I have had fuji cameras for about 4 years now. The XC is a very small and light lens, which you might find pleasantly liberating. (The viltrox lenses are larger and heavier than the 18-55 kit lens I believe.) Also, at $199 USD it is probably the cheapest lens with autofocus you can find, yet is very similar in performance to the more expensive XF 35mm f2 WR. Finally, I personally would stick with Fuji brand lenses for AF until viltrox irons out all the issues with their new lenses. (The Viltrox lenses occasionally cause damage to some Fuji cameras - for example, see: www.msn.com/en-in/money/technology/viltrox-lenses-can-damage-fuji-x-pro3-camera-model/ar-BB145sWy)

    • @matthagge4792
      @matthagge4792 4 роки тому +1

      Have to agree Joe on this and for the same reasons. The XC 35mm F2 is probably the best choice for you. The speed difference is not that important really, and the size and weight of the XC will make the camera much smaller and lighter which means you'll be carrying it more and shooting with it more. Shooting often, and in more situations, is much more important than a stop of light on a standard prime for a beginner. Plus, the AF with just work without issues and hiccups.

    could someone help explain more about focus breathing or not natural movements - could the solution be done in the AF settings in the camera that one setting is better than others? Could the "negative" aspect you mention still be a positive for other kind of work?
    though i personally would choose the Viltrox 23mm to have low light photography while later getting the XF 35mm f2 (later) because its the cheapest of the XF f2 primes hahaha.
    lastly is the 85mm still good to pick up today?

    thanks for this video, im trying to film with the viltrox 23mm/1.4 on a fuji xt200 and can't get video as it "breathes" in and out of focus with my heartbeat! Is that what you mean by focus breathing? It makes all the film unuseable so far :( trying to work out what im doing wrong.

    Andrew, thanks for the review. I know you have plan for the 23mm 1.4 review but I have a quick question. Earlier in the 33mm 1.4 review, you mentioned that the AF-C is working pretty good. I am trying out the 23mm 1.4 and the AF-C tracking of my daughter was really bad compared to my XF23mm 2.0. Did your copy of the 23mm 1.4 performed comparable to the 33mm 1.4 in the AF-C? I'm wondering whether my copy is a defective one or if this lens(23mm 1.4) generally have problem in the AF-C mode.

    Very helpful video. I am a beginner waiting for my x-t4 to arrive in the mail in 2 days. Would you say that the 23 or the 35 is a better choice as a starting point for general all-around use for shooting family videos?

    • @manwhalejoe6962
      @manwhalejoe6962 4 роки тому +1

      I would humby suggest the 23 - the wider angle of view is much better for families and kids (and for general all around shooting). However, if you are trying to take a still portrait (photo, not video) of someone, then the 35 would be more flattering. So it kind of depends! If you have ONLY the 35mm, you are going to miss some shots, and it will be too tight for group shots, wider shots (of disney world, mountains and vistas, famous buildings, etc). (Speaking from experience, my X100F with its 23mm lens is my usual travel and low-key camera, but I have an Xpro3 with the 18-55 and sometimes 35mm as backup, and only bring my 56mm if someone specifically asked me to take their photo.)

  • @-grey
    @-grey 4 роки тому +1

    Cool. I have been waiting for these. I'm a little concerned that the 1.4 light gathering isn't as 1.4 as it should be though. I've heard mixed opinions about it, and I really like the 1.4 light gathering. I think the 33 would be my choice because I'm feeling less than enthusiastic about the speed and reliability of my 35f1.4 these days.

    I upgrade from my x-t1 to x-t3 soon. I already have the 18-55mm, but don't know which lenses to buy. The f2's are great for autofocus, but they aren't stabilized. Gonna use it with the ronin sc. In terms of the focal lenght and the OIS the 55-200mm would be good, but because of the aperture i rather need some prime lenses. What do you guys suggest?

    • @professionalpotato4764
      @professionalpotato4764 4 роки тому

      You don't really need OIS if you're running on a gimbal. The IBIS could counter-act the gimbal and give jitters.
      I personally like the 85-90mm (135mm on full frame) look for shooting small events. The 50mm (75mm ff) look is also pretty good for b-roll.
      Depends on what you shoot. Close up shots of people? Landscape? Night time? Fashion? Product?
      They all require different lenses.

      X-T4 for sure. With the Fringer adapter, you can use so many good EF glass.
      And the dual SD slots (even for a casual shooter, losing an entire day of content will be sad), 10 bit video, better controls, almost no overheating (m6 ii overheats in 40mins).
      EF-M mount is dead. Deader than m43. Canon is only supporting RF now cos that's where the big money will come from.

    Can anybody tell me what is so special about Fuji lenses from a general perspective of view. I have read here and there that Fuji makes superb quality lenses, yet when I watch detailed reviews like this one, I realise they have many flows, especially the older ones. So what makes them special? If that's really the case. I don't mean to cause any debates, I am just trying to understand as I am a newbie 😁

    • @AndrewGoodCamera
      @AndrewGoodCamera  4 роки тому

      They are photography lenses, not videography lenses. If you're taking stills they have some superb lens options. I wouldn't say they are better than the best Canon L or Sony G-Master lenses. But some of them can hang.
