How to know if you're actually involved in legalism

This has been heavy on my heart recently. I think this can be a very dangerous topic because so many people are using this term incorrectly, and for a young girl who's in a conservative church, this could mess her up and give her the wrong ideas.
Here are the verses I mentioned, as well as the definition of legalism.
In Christian theology, "legalism" (or "nomism") is a pejorative term applied to the idea that "by doing good works or by obeying the law, a person earns and merits salvation."
Bible verses against legalism: John 14:15, John 14:21 I Peter 1:15 Ephesians 2:8-10.
