I've always been a big fan of medieval/celtic ballads and after composing a celtic one I tried to do a more medieval-ish one. When I first started composing it I was not really enjoying what I was doing and I was nearly giving up on it. Ends up to be one of the most beautiful songs I've composed and one of my personal favourites.

In my country its illegal to hunt and kill wolves. I agree, wolves are my favourite animals since i was a kid, and i absolutely despise people who are hunting them.

A quick poem I wrote to this song.
Winter wolf,
her coat ragged as her midnight wrath
the thorns of fate, a twisted laugh,
heroes that once roamed the mountains high,
now buried under the gray skies,
Winter wolf,
under your rule,
forces and armies
are simple tools,
winter wolf,
allies are nay,
heart of stone.
Winter wolf, your power reigns
tears are shed, the innocent slain
Winter wolf, her eyes as black as night
they watch, and take out every light
a silent sleep, never to wake.
So beautiful great!

Winter Wolf is lithe and steady
Winter Wolf won't cry
Winter Wolf is unyielding
Winter Wolf will die
The villagers want it killed
They must break all that is graceful
And anything that counters their power
Is considered replaceable
Winter Wolf is languid
She won't be easily caught
Winter Wolf is wise
Her survival isn't for naught
But the wolf is alone
And outnumbered on her part
How could a being so ethereal
Be struck down by a single dart?
So now the villagers have it
Her form lay lifeless and cold
Her pelt traded for metal
Winter Wolf was gone for gold
Her howl still lingers here
Drifting in frozen air
What the villagers do not know
Is that nature is a wolf's lair.
This sums up mankinds acts and feelings towards nature. Nicely written.
And yet still another stays
he howls for his love
A love who could not be saved
His song haunts the dreams of those who killed
Who killed his lover
In all of her grace
Who spilled her blood upon the land
Who have brought their people disgrace
May they be cursed
May they lose their souls
May their riches be taken
As was his queen
May they be lost
And never again seen
May the Winter Queen's death be avenged
May her song carry on
With winter's unforgiving winds...

I think this is most germanic related than celts but ok
i can't imagine wolfs as being a enemy... i always see eand feel the nature as being my friend, apart of me where everything will intwine with itselfs.

No Roses shall bloom from the meadows.
When winter wreaks havoc on the land,
You can bet there'll be no Snakes in the sand.
When winter brings to life all it finds grim,
The Krakens will freeze where they swim.
When winter sets and the land begins to shiver,
The Flayed Man will start to rot and wither.
When winter fights to the last sliver,
No more Trouts shall swim in the river.
When winter ravages and all despair,
No Falcons shall fly high in the air.
When winter shows you what happens when snow falls,
Not even Dragons Breath shall warm you in your halls.

It's cold. The wind feels like spears piercing the skin of my face. My coat ripped and burned from the fires. The cut on my thigh sealed when the blood pouring out of it froze. I move on, looking up I see the moon, the only friend I have in this wilderness. Far off in the distance I hear the howls of a wolf pack as they begin their nightly roamings. I feel so exhausted and cold. To my knees I fall the snow touching my chest, all I can think of is despair as I wait for my time to come to an end, but I hear sound of the snow shifting in front of me. I look up to see the wolf pack all watching me with eyes akin to curiosity, the alpha from the looks of him moves up to me his eyes studying me, judging if I was a threat or not. He stops then sniffs me before calling his fellow pack members. I shut my eyes tight thoughts flying through my mind saying, This is it! I've lost everything and now my end is to be eaten by wolves! I wait for death but what I feel are the wolves surrounding me, pressing their body's to mine like a living blanket. I fall asleep with the wolves covering me protecting me from the cold. When I wake the next morning I hear voices shouting in the distance from where I came and the wolves are gone, their tracks the only indication of where they've moved.
I love how the song ends with a wolf howling. So awesome!
Medieval music is simply wonderful , fascinates me and do not know why , but it takes me like the wind.

+_SiBI _ I agree, but as there is something like food allergies revolved from your previous generations (based upon location of living and availibiliy of certain foods) there might be some switches in the brain that react to stimulus strongly imprinted in the past as well :)

Majestic and powerful, yet something gentle about it, too. And of course, can't forget that it's also mysterious and beautiful. Reminds me greatly of someone very close to my heart, someone I have sometimes envisioned as being a prince of earth with wolves surrounding him, while I am a young girl sky knight serving him to the best of my ability. Ah, there goes my imagination again. I can't help it, though. I have a very vivid imagination that always needs to express itself somehow.

Just thought I should let you know, this is my favorite song of all time, from anywhere. At one point I had this on repeat non-stop, day and night, for three months. After that it got to the point I literally could not fall asleep without this playing. Stunning work and thank you.

i agree with 'b f', this is a very nice piece and a part of my soul lives in other times than these! music is such an expressive art form, i still compose, but only as a pastime these days, i prefer to appreciate the the compositions of others. occasionally rock, folk, and pure instrumental compositions such as this piece. too many to mention here! yet i have mentioned yours haven't i !!!yet i will say that in one form or another ritchie blackmore has always been an inspiration, and now i feel he is creating with candice and the others in blackmore's night a very positive and wondrous gift to those fortunate enough to appreciate it. there are (and i hope will always be) artists such as yourself that transport the imagination to wondrous realms, i wish you well, and thanks!

A lion may be the king but the wolves never perform on a circus
That's because the lion would lay down his crown for us, that's how much he loves us...while the wolves will always be more beast and less close to man to that of their nature made respectfully. Glory to the lion for there is no animal more beautiful and humble in the kingdom to that he would even break the very nature of himself to play along in our circus, whereas others like the wolves cannot even fathom such empathy. Long live the king lion for he has my sword and heart eternal and infinite.

A lone Viking, the last surviving of his clan, trudges hopelessly through the snow with a deer on his back, it's body still warm.. His pace quickens as he see's smoke in the horizon, the snow thickening into a white-out, as he runs closer and closer, seeing the smoke grow greater in his sight.. Fire blazing forth through the opaque snowfall, he comes upon his village destroyed, not one man woman or child alive. A tear rolls down his face, freezing as it rolls down his cheek; the tear, a representation of his heart becoming ice, as he squeezes the neck of the deer, helpless, and angry.. He falls to his knees and cries to the falling snow, as he hears in the distance a lone wolf cry the song of his broken heart; he stands up. Remembering, always. He trudges North, following the footprints of those who pillaged his home, gripping his axe as if it would be lost forever if he dropped it.. He treads on, as the wolf watches from the peaks, comforting him, strengthening him, with the howl of his loneliness, everything he's lost, is the only thing that keeps him going.
