I am currently in vet tech school and will be graduating in May! Only a little over a week until I’m off to Texas for my externship. Our school had everyone become fear free certified which is awesome and really eases our patients when we do our surgical nursing labs.
Happy Valentines!! My husband is also in the military and is in TX, I’m in Massachusetts. Bummer. One day he will be home- middle of April! Love your videos and how sweet you are
I wish I knew where you worked because I'm from Northern VA and am in vet school now but I come how every summer to work at vet clinics in NOVA haha hope you're enjoying Virginia!!!
That is so great the vet is fear free! I always get nervous with bringing my girl to a new vet. We’ve taken her to a place before that definitely man handled her. Happy Valentine’s Day!
Do you think you'll ever post any more veterinary videos in the future? Or have you left the profession? I miss them! I am currently a 2nd year student veterinary nurse in the UK and I used to watch your videos as a patient assistant and it's what made me want to go ahead and qualify and for that, I want to thank you!
3:50 i know what that feels! my husband was a marine and when he was in thailand that was the only way to talk to each other like every other day, it sucked! PS: congrats on the job!! i'm looking for a job as a vet assistant right now but i haven't had any luck haha :(
My hospital wasn't AAHA Accredited, but we NEVER re-used needles. that's just gross. And definitely never re-used surgical packs without autoclaving. For valentines day, I spent my day working from home (obviously not a tech anymore -- i work in pet insurance now) nursing the worst cold I've had in a really long time. I'm also asthmatic so colds are not good for my lungs. My adorable hubby of 28 years is home and he's having taco salad and I'm having soup LOL. Not very exciting this year, but oh well. congrats on the new job and getting started back in school :-) HAPPY VALENTINES DAY !!
I think our husbands are on the same ship. Not 100% sure but it’s possible. My husband left last month around the same time and coming home I think on the 25th as well. I just think it’s pretty cool. 😁
Any suggestions for my rescue pit/mix? When I take her to the vet I have to muzzle her and they have to put her to sleep to just cut her nails! I need a new vet because now she wont even go into the vet office without wanting to bite the workers! I feel so bad for my poor Brooklyn🐶 she is so stressed out!!
I would see if there are any fear free certified veterinarian's in your area. The fear free website has an entire section for pet owners too. I would 100% check it out. If you want to try a more natural approach I would look into Composure Pro and Thunder Shirts. If you can't find a fear free vet then talk to your vet about Trazodone or Sileo and see if they are familiar with using them as a pre-vet visit anti-anxiety medication. To be honest, I would schedule a consultation visit with your veterinarian and talk to him/her about your concerns. If they don't seem willing, familiar or open with trying new things then find a vet that is. Communication is key. Happy Valentines Day! Loved your food for thought. We all have flaws, life can be so much more enjoyable if we all accept each other for our differences. 😁
Congratulations!!!! I am very happy that you enjoy your new job and you don't have to go against what you believe in as it has high standards of practice. I can totally see that being limited can get you frustrated and annoyed though. Can't wait for your veterinary videos, it's been too long ;) lots of love x
Here in Montana we are trying to make it so that you must sit for the VTNE through a grandfather clause or must go through schooling to be hired as a Veterinary Technician and I think that is very important to have the highest quality of care! I totally agree with you about AAHA and Fear Free (I'm currently a student and graduating in April btw!)
How do we get a vet clinic with those standards in my town?? I have had HORRIBLE experiences. Like finding a stray kitten who had been hurt. Turns out her neck was broken...the vet immediately snatched that baby by the scruff and lifted her up to check her out. Inches from catching a charge!😡 I'm most likely sending that vet this video so she can TAKE NOTE! LOVE YOUR VIDEOS! (((HUGS))) #ALWAYSAWEIRDO #proudofit
You inspired me last year to enrol in school to become an animal health technician, and I'm happy to say that I've just started my first classes! Sending love all the way from South Africa🇿🇦
We took our cat only a year old to get declawed and 2 days later she died. The vet said she had aids then came back after she died and said she had cancer. She was young and healthy. We believe they did something to her. So hearing how all vets don't do what they should doesn't surprise me. Love watching you and your family. 💕Happy Valentine's day
So happy for you! We just adopted a sweet girl from the shelter and they had her marked as aggressive. She’s not. She was terrified there. Took her to our fear free vet and she did so amazing. Love the fear free approach. ❤️
Congratulations on your new job!! I knew you’d get it, you’re just so friendly and seem so approachable and fun to be around! I’m currently training to be a vet care assistant (vet tech to you I think) your videos are so helpful and motivating! ❤️
I work at a clinic that is not AAHA certified and isn't technically a "Low Cost" clinic, but it is very low cost comparatively. When costs are lower, that means overhead has to be lower- think about what corners have to be cut to keep costs down. The doctor I work for (who is not the business owner) takes sterility seriously and practices good medicine with the tools she has, she even saved my dog's life on Christmas morning, but working there has made me recognize the value in bringing your pets to an AAHA hospital. You're very right when you say that not all vet clinics are equal.
Happy Valentine's Day! Also when you were talking about enrolling back in school I hope your classes go well! The VTNE is not that difficult if you study hard for it! I suggest a book of multiple choice questions and go through a lot of them! I passed first try with a high score from that book! Good luck!!!! Love your videos btw!
How do you draw blood from aggressive dog or cat while being also fear free? Can you restrain them? I’m genuinely interested because I work as a tech in vet clinic in Europe.
There are tooonnsss of different techniques or medications you can use to make veterinary visits a lot easier for the patient and the staff as well. We will try anything from treats, thunder shirts, adaptil, sileo or even asking the owner to step of the room. If you still have an aggressive patient then your veterinarian needs to decide what the best medication would be for the pet. Most of the time sending the owner home with an anti-anxiety medication to administer at home and then returning to the clinic works wonders. If that's not the case then considering a mild sedative would be another option. You should check out the fear free website!!! fearfreepets.com/veterinary-professionals/
Victoria Birch I have my CVA but I want to go for my CVT. I’ve been looking at Penn Foster because it’s online.. and because I’m full time working at a clinic now. Do you like Cedar Valley?
@@kaylasequin6200 The Cedar Valley Program is semester based and not work at your own pace like Penn Foster. Personally, I love Cedar Valley and have had a good experience with them. I'm the type of person who has to have deadlines, otherwise I would never get anything done haha
I’ve worked a number of low cost practices and never resused needles or surgery packs... that’s not “normal” and should be reported... that’s just a normal standard of care. Kinda makes it sound like if a clinic isn’t AAHA approved then they practice this sub-standard medicine. I’ve interviewed places that are AAHA approved and have literally been told that they only practice those AAHA standards if they have someone inspecting them. Also had an AAHA hospital yell at me for listening to a cats heart under anesthesia with a stethoscope... AAHA hospital unfortunately does not equal good medicine.
Happy Valentine’s Day everyone! I went out to dinner yesterday with my significant other since we both work late shifts today! But I am bringing my kitty in to work with me. (I totally agree with the manhandling thing-I’m sooo against it).
oh no! Don't cry!! Ear infections are very common and (usually) easy to treat!! The sooner you get it checked out the better the outcome :) Hope it all went well today!! Happy Valentines dayyy!!

On the topic of “Fear Free”... There are volunteers in my community who set up a low-cost spay and neuter clinic every so often. A vet and some of their staff come in and provide the services. I volunteered at one of these events a couple years back and noticed a lot of things that left me uneasy. Because they had a good turnout of dogs and cats, time became an issue and I noticed the vet techs and veterinarian kinda manhandling the animals and being a bit harsh with them when they’d try to resist. I know they were trying to get things done in a timely fashion and of course I have so much respect for the folks trying to make a difference in the community by hosting these clinics, but for some reason I left in tears that day and couldn’t quite pinpoint why I was so emotional. It was emotionally very draining. Definitely not a fear free environment by any stretch of the imagination. I’d be curious to see what some of your thoughts are about these clinics. Definitely not trying to discourage anyone from using them, no animal was actually “abused” that I saw, it was just a very high stress environment. Maybe I’m too sensitive, I dunno 🙈. I’m just glad to hear of these fear free practices and certifications.
I also have so much respect for veterinary professionals trying to make a difference in communities by setting up low-cost clinics. However, I don't ever think it's ok to manhandle the patients.. ESPECIALLY for the sake of "saving time". I think people get so focused on trying to save time, see more patients and get things done they lose sight of good patient care.
Victoria Birch yes! I was so torn because it was like “wow look at all these pets who get to be spayed/neutered and vaccinated today but at the same time I didn’t like so many things that I saw. Again kudos to you for bringing awareness to “fear free” ❤️
What do you suggest for a tech that has ended up at a job that doesnt appreciate the techs, pay isn't good, management doesn't fix any complaints, and gives no time off. I just can't seem to find a good clinic
I'm not single, but I cleaned house and cooked dinner and did three loads of laundry. Oh and cleaned my grandmas house. Yay. Lol Edit. Lol. In November my grandpa passed away and my 5 pound chiuwaha really loved him. She got so sick. We thought it was because he was gone. My vet was closed that week, so I rushed her to another one my grandparents used. The lady was so rude. Within 10 mins she told me my dog would be dead soon. Gave her lasix shot and pills and heart medication. Long story short. My dog got worse. Like BAD BAD BAD. so I drove my baby 30 min away to another clinic. THANK THE LORD I DID!!!!! She was in kidney failure and had a severe uterus infection. The vet was so sweet, treated my baby like it was his own. Rushed her into surgury, kept her 5 days. Called me and updated me every single day. Just took magnificent care of my baby! Shes good as new now, thanks for the amazing loving vet!!!!! So yes some vets just suck...big ones... and it's a shame. Animals cannot speak for themselfs, so they need a compassionate person to care for them! Your awesome and love on all them furbabies!!!!
HAPPY VALENTINES DAY! 💓 I hope you have a wonderful day! Today consists of my boyfriend and I go out for lunch together Random question, what are your thoughts on getting involved in rescue/shelter work?
Vet tech here: So gonna steal that box of chocolates and netflix idea! Down with a cast on my foot so not doing much. And, so agree with the Fear Free program and practices. It's better for animals and safer for the staff, too. I wish you luck on classes and the VTNE. I think you are going to ace it, though! Just a feeling I have.
The vet I worked for did not believe at all in fear-free, and I think that’s ultimately why I left. Restraining terrifies animals and blaming others and the animal for their stress is almost traumatic. I was bit by a sweet cat that the vet was manhandling, very much forcing care onto, and then screamed at me for getting bit. It’s horrible. Folks, please ask your vet if they believe in fear-free practice. If they don’t know what that is... consider taking the pet somewhere else honestly. Not worth it.
I thought places i have worked were crazy for autoclaving syringes or reusing fluid bags with new lines, but even they didnt reuse needles or unautoclaved surgery packs! 😲 My dream is to work at a clinic that is fully fear free and aaha, maybe even a specialty clinic, so your new job sounds amazing to me!!
Yes. It broke my heart too... It was a "low" cost clinic, so the staff didn't see anything wrong with using dirty and unsterile surgical packs... the worst part is, the patients wouldn't be completely under anesthesia and some would even wake up in the middle of surgery. I think it's completely unethical. Makes me want to education owners that you really get what you paid for when it comes to low cost procedures. And of course there are exceptions, I know there are low cost clinics that actually are ethical but I don't think there are many.
Victoria Birch absolutely. You get what you pay for. The clinic I worked at was more mid-line, and we had to “fix” a lot of problems caused by the low-cost vet down the road. By then, the animal is already traumatized as well.
I am currently in vet tech school and will be graduating in May! Only a little over a week until I’m off to Texas for my externship. Our school had everyone become fear free certified which is awesome and really eases our patients when we do our surgical nursing labs.

I once interviewed with a veterinary clinic that re-used their needles. My jaw DROPPED when I saw it happen and I peaced out of there.
It's absolutely ridiculous... and unfortunately it happens all the time.

Oh my god😱 I can’t believe that some vet practises use used needles and used surgical set😱😱😱😱 breaks my 💔
😭😭😭😭😭😭
I thought places i have worked were crazy for autoclaving syringes or reusing fluid bags with new lines, but even they didnt reuse needles or unautoclaved surgery packs! 😲 My dream is to work at a clinic that is fully fear free and aaha, maybe even a specialty clinic, so your new job sounds amazing to me!!
Christa Robbins working with board certified vets will be cool
