I have brompton 6 speed with swytch kit. I have two batteries. It can cruise 16-17mph. I get about 25-30 miles with two batteries. I'm very pleased with the swytch system. I've had it for about two years now. Having a extra battery is a must.
That is a good idea. It would certainly save me charging the battery after every ride. Thankfully I don't have to travel far on one charge. Safe travels and thanks for watching.
I installed the Swytch kit on a new C Line Brompton yesterday and went through exactly the same problems (sensor...etc). And indeed the battery mount is a design fault. I saw your other video on mounting the battery adapter on the other side of the handle bar. However I found a nice solution that you might like to get the battery facing forward. 1- First I did what Richard did: I moved the mount position by unscrewing the clamp unit and re-attaching using the second set of holes thus changing the position and it folds, but also using the 3rd position (p25 of the manual) with screw hidden) as I think it is a few mm higher. However, unlike Richard it still did not want to fold using the extended location post that they supplied. 2- The mount touches the wheel bars by ~5mm... so after trying different methods and looking at the mount, I saw that the bottom part does not need the extra piece of plastic up to the shape that goes into the battery. I took a metal saw (there is a piece of metal inside) and cut neatly that part... and now it just folds ... I know that you said to Richard you are all sorted, but just in case you cange your mind later or other want to do it instead of having the battery facing the biker, I thought I post it.
Ahh, thanks Cyril. However, I'm losing interest in my Swytch kit rapidly. I don't have a lot of faith in it, if I am honest. I may even give it to my wife, to put on hers and order that new P Line I have my eye on! It will, at least, soften the blow for her when she finds yet another Brompton in my collection. 😆Thanks for commenting. Mal.
Also, not sure if you've seen my vlog of our London Brompton trip but, I am planning another for around June time. This time, heading south of Westminster. If you like that sort of thing, keep your eye out for it. Cheers.
Hello, and thank you for the video. My Brompton came with a front wheel dynamo providing power to both front and rear lights. However, after replacing it with the 16-inch Swytch tire motor, I'm unable to connect to my existing front and rear lights. Have you encountered this issue? If so, do you have any adapters that can link my existing electric cable for both lights to the Swytch battery? There are two new round connectors available, but I'm uncertain about their use. Thank you.
Hi Angelito, I was considering that but, I think it'll be the last option as it would look a little odd. However, it may be the only option! Cheers. Mal.
@@CampervanHabitude The online manual has been updated compared to the printed version and includes the recommendation to reverse the mount to face the Seatpost. Looking at the promotional videos, they are using a Brompton with strait handlebars which has a different height Stem, so it may fold correctly with the kit facing forwards. The only alternative is to get a Brompton Block mount (if they still plan to do one), but this means you lose the ability to mount a bag on the bike. I'll be testing mine tomorrow but with the battery mounted in revers I suspect this will make mounting the controller very difficult.
Ahh, that's interesting. I'm not sure I like the idea of the battery facing me but, I may have no alternative. I'm in no desperate need to fold the M6L at the moment so, I will just enjoy there kit for a few days before I try adjusting. Thanks for commenting. Good luck with yours.
@@CampervanHabitudehow did you get on? Another issue I found with the battery facing the saddle is it hitting my legs if I need to stand on my pedals but that is not a major issue. The biggest problem is once folded it makes the bike difficult to carry and takes more space, it makes more unstable and tends to tilt the bike to the right and often fall.
It seems more audible than my electric Brompton but I like the handlebar power switch as having to stop to engage and disengage power assist on the electric Brompton is a bind.
Hi. No, I don't. The only indication is, the green light is illuminated on the actually charging box. If you like Bromptons BTW, check out my other channel, 'Brompton Habitude'. Cheers. Mal.
I have a TERN folding bike. I had to place the battery facing the rider on the handlebars in order for it to fold fully. Not sure if you can do this on the Brompton.
Thanks for the video. I have just installed the same kit with the S bar and managed to have it fold with it mounted to the front. I moved the mount poition by unscrewing the clamp unit and re-attaching using the second set of holes thus changing the position and it folds! I then employed the extended location post that they supplied. Hope it works for you.
Hi Richard, thanks for commenting. I'm all sorted with the battery now, details included in a follow up vlog. I have to say, I'm not too impressed with the kit though. It loses power far too easily, far too soon. Hopefully, yours is okay.
Helpful video - thanks. I've just paid my deposit for delivery in June (I hope). What are your thoughts on whether either of the optional throttles and OLED displays are necessary or useful? Also, I'm thinking about getting bar end grips the same as yours. What's your opinion of them? Thanks.
Hi, I haven't used one with the throttle but, I know someone who has one and he loves it. However, he does talk about the battery running out quite a bit. Therefore, I think the temptation to use it too much is far too great and the pedal assist is more than adequate. Plus, if you want one at a later date, you can order one then. With regard to the bar ends, yes, a total game changer. Totally worth getting. Sorry, I can't recall what mine are but, I got them off Amazon. Enjoy your kit when it arrives and check out my other vlogs - not all Brompton but more Brompton material will follow. Cheers.
Excellent video thank you. I have a Swytch kit connected to my Dahon folder. I have similar fold issues to you. Not sure what the solution might be. More worryingly my motor cut out this morning after half a mile or so. I thought I had plenty of charge when I left home. Worrying if it can’t be relied upon.
Ahh, thanks for the kind comments. Well, the fold is sorted now but, it sounds like you're having the same issue with the power on the kit as I am. I sent a lengthy reply to 'James Williams' in this comment stream. It may be worth reading to see if you're experiencing similar issues. Totally agree with you. It's a little concerning, particularly when the bike seems so hard to peddle without the kit working.
Thank you for the reply. My experience is very similar to yours re power cutting out. The power pack appears to be worse than its predecessor in terms of longevity although its sleek design doesn’t adversely affect the balance of the bike as much.
Great vid on the new swytch kit! I have the older model battery packs and you can set the top speed to the US limit of 20mph which it doesn't show you on the newer instruction manuals
TBH, I don't think the new kit is as good as the old kit. there seems to be a fair amount of lag in the motor. Others have commented on this vlog and my other Brompton follow up vlog, explaining they have a similar issue. One mentioned going back to his old kit as it's better than the new one! Thanks for commenting. Mal.
Hi, I can only pass on what has been mentioned from those who have owned the older kit. No experience myself. My new kit suffers from a lag, sluggish response and stopping completely at times. This has been mentioned by others with new kits where as, others who have the old kit don't seem to suffer with these issues. Cheers.
We did this conversion last year on Wife's bike. We'll probably reverse the battery mount to enhance folding capability but otherwise the conversion was straightforward if you follow the Brompton-specific instructions. Note that the sensor provided by Swytch is a cadence sensor; hence the power output of the motor is dependent on cadence, not torque, which takes a bit of getting used to. You will find yourself downshifting into a lower gear in order to boost power and pedaling much faster to add boost. We would have preferred a crankset torque sensor but we suspect that the cost and complexity made it impractical for a conversion kit.
Hi Stephen, yes, I have flipped mine around now. Ahh, I wasn't aware of the 'cadence sensor' but, your description does make perfect sense. Every day is a learning day! Thanks for commenting.
My brother added the swytch kit to mine, and had mounted it to face me. I do a lot of urban start and stop & go, as well as hilly riding and found that I end up smashing my kneecaps and just above my kneecaps in it after a week or so of use, hard enough that I've had to take a brommie break as I've really done in one of my knees. I will attempt again, once my knee is better, but watch out if you do much standing up riding on your bike. We are considering mounting it to the seat post as another option.
TBH, I don't tend to stand on mine and I'm starting to manage the power dips too much plus I'm a lot better since Stephen mentioned the 'cadence sensor'. It makes much more sense these days but, it's still not ideal. I also have a few Brompton trips planned for me and a couple of my Brompton pals so, it may be an investment in a P Line in the very near future as it'd be a bit unfair, tagging along with a Switch attached. You heard it here first! 😆I hope your knee gets better and you get back to Bromptoning soon. Take care.
Hi Mal. Watched your video o the Brompton and persuaded me to get the Swytch kit for the wife ! Or me It arrives today apparently. Any advice on fitting. Ps. Boris s dad
How does the ride with the Swytch wheel without the power on compare to a regular Brompton? I would use it for touring and only use the smaller battery for a few steep hills and so for most of the day the power would be off. I have tried another front hub motor however the resistance with the power off is too great to use for touring.
Hi Gordon. I'm having a few issues with my kit at the moment. I have the larger battery, which should be good for around 17 miles, depending on terrain. But, my battery seems to lose power very quickly on inclines and then seems to come back to life when there is less strain on the motor. I'm currently in talks with Swytch but, their reply seems to suggest this is normal. Bit odd really, as I was hoping it would excel in this area. When the power is off, there is greater resistance. Of course, I can't comment for all Swytch kits as we haven't managed to confirm if my kit is faulty yet or if this is the norm. Good luck with your search and your touring.
@@CampervanHabitude Thank you for your prompt answer. Unfortunately greater resistance seems to be the case for all front hub motors for use on a Brompton, which only makes sense because the hub wheel is significantly heavier.
It looked like if there was a little more slack in the several black cables, it might have allowed your bike to be folded with more ease. It seemed like they came up against part of the bike frame (maybe the seat tube) while they were being bent around it in order for you to fold the bike.
Hi, I have since spoken with Swytch and it's confirmed as a design fault. The carrier is now mounted facing the seat as it cannot close whilst on the front of the handle bars - despite them showing it in that position in the instruction manual and the social media advert. The carrier sticks out too far. I have since moved it and it folds now. Thanks for commenting. Mal.
The order tracker makes it seems like my kit should already be here, yet has not arrive, not yet received an update since last month when they said my kit was being ready to ship
Swytch is too heavily going on an order by order basis when it comes to production, they need to evaluate how many units they expect to sell, with a +10% Marin of error, make them in single go then ship them as orders come through, with a smaller team orgs like to ship products in waves but that makes them simply take too long, with the amount of order swytch likes to boast they should fix their manufacturing and shipping process to accommodate
It sounds very familiar. Mine was close to six months and plenty of promises in between. Swytch also sent an updated installation manual via email last Friday, explaining how to install the Swytch kit to Brompton bikes so the bike will fold. It's a pity they never sent that out with the kit! I will put out a follow up vlog explaining... hopefully today. Good luck with yours.
Great vid👍! I've seen this issue with the fold from another video. It appears the remedy is to fit the battery holder the reverse way (inside the handlebars and not on the outside). Now, I have a question, do you think you could get 30km from that battery or are they exaggerating this max range?
Ji James, yes, I released another vlog a few weeks ago, showing how I remedied that and why. With regard to the distance, no, I really don't. I'm currently trying to sort an issue with Swytch as the battery seems to die quite early. I provided the following review on Trust Pilot: I waited far too long for my kit to arrive with delay following delay over and over. The instructions of how to fit the battery on my Brompton were advertised incorrectly in your advertising campaign and in your instruction manual. It was only after delivery that Swytch recognised this error and sent out further instruction to reverse the battery mount to face the rear of the bike. I have the larger battery, which should provide approximately 17 miles of journey (I would imagine, this may be achievable as long as I'm not putting the battery under too much strain.) My journey to work is around 3 miles. The only bank I face is on my way home, a slight incline that should pose no problem to the average cyclist - young, old or even infirm. Whilst on my way home - less than four miles in to my total journey for the day, the battery indicator on the base display starts to decrease to four bars, quickly followed to three. By the time I get to the aforementioned bank, the display is usually down to two bars or even one and occasionally drops below one, resulting in no power to the motor. Upon contacting Swytch I was directed to a page to conduct certain checks - I confirmed that the front wheel span when I press the down arrow on the base display. The red light on the sensor flashed when I rotated the pedal and the front wheel span too. The magnetic disc was parallel to the sensor. The green light on the charge block turned from green to red when I plugged it into my battery to charge. I was contacted to say there is a long wait for an engineer to get back to me - several days as it turned out. I was then sent the following email: ‘The light on your battery is a good indicator of charge level when charging but should not be used to determine the level of charge during your rides. This is because the display will read the level of charge better. The display and battery read battery power level by the amount of voltage which fluctuates when in use, so sometimes can decrease more under load and can also go back up when not under load. It is also possible that the first light decreases quickly due to the level of charge too, when the first bar may go down very quickly, it may be that it was only charged up very slightly over that bar. The best way to get an idea of charge is to check your display battery level indicator when you stop at traffic lights or a junction, for example. This is when the voltage will normalize and show the most accurate level of charge. To be honest, I don’t expect to pay 600 plus pound to wait six months for a kit to arrive, have to alter the kit as it was not as advertised and then only manage to travel five to six miles before having to stop so my battery could reset… our whatever it is your engineer suggested was happening whilst I was stopped at traffic lights at a junction. Interestingly, I have a UA-cam channel and have put a couple of vlogs out about the issues with the battery mount but, I haven’t released one about the battery charge yet. In relation to the battery mount I had numerous people respond from around the world and they too felt very let down by Swytch. Some choosing to not place an order with Swytch or even cancel existing orders. It’ll be interesting to hear what they are experiencing with their batteries. ...and got the following response: Thank you for flagging this issue with your Power Pack performance. We would like to assist you further with this situation and you should have already received a private message from us regarding this technical abnormality. Please do note that we have included additional troubleshooting steps and tips for you as we wish to do everything we can do improve your experience with your brand new Kit. Moreover, our team is currently working on alternative mounting solutions for Bromptons to make folding and general usage more convenient. Please let us know if you have any further questions. The Swytch Team. I haven't had chance to do all the things they suggest but, I don't hold out much hope. BTW, I wouldn't generally respond to this extent but, wouldn't want someone to fork out six hundred quid and get the same problem. Good luck. Mal.
@@CampervanHabitude Honestly, thanks for the in depth reply. Also, apologies as I saw your follow up video about the fix on your channel afterwards. Yeah, I always wondered with the Switch kit and I'm probably going to look for Nano or Sparticle kit long term for my Brommie. Cheers again for the reply 👍
@@CampervanHabitude It's interesting that Swytch are using their paying customers to do the testing for them. I know new kit can often have teething problems but it seems that Swytch are taking advantage of your good will in order to improve their product so that it's fit for purpose by the time I decide to buy one. Good luck & I hope they ... sort you out/take it back & refund you/give you a juicy discount. Cheers 👍🏼
Excellent video. I noticed that you mounted the sensor to the seat post tube rather than the thinner down tube as recommended by Swytch. However, as many people have noted, the down tube position places the sensor too far from the magnetic disc, even with the supplied spacers. Your seat post position seems logical so I'm interested in how that has worked for you.
Hi, To be honest, it just felt like the most logical position and maintains the best gap to the magnetic disc. I haven't had any issues with it at all. Thanks for watching. 👍
That's very poor service. Do Swytch have a social media page for your region where you could add a comment, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter for example? I find that comments on these sites often prompt a response as the company don't like bad press. Good luck with sorting it. 👍
Ahh, hi Mike, good to hear from a local. If I'm honest, I'm not sure I am happy with the switch Kit. It certainly lasts nowhere near 17 miles before the battery dies. There is also an issue with power loss on steep banks. Swytch claim this is to be expected. I personally think, if you've ordered a electric kit the objective should be to get up banks comfortably! There is also a lag in the motor. It feels like the brakes are being pulled every 30 seconds or so before the motor kits back in. Swytch aren't the best at customer service, as echoed by others who have messaged me.
Looks like fun, doesn’t stop you from panting though 😄 Your recycling bin will be full with all that cardboard! And I bet Ruth loved you doing all that on the kitchen island 😂
The panting is due to me being a fat Knacker!! Sadly, the assistance from the Swytch kit isn't going to change that either! 😆Ruth is currently laid up with a bulging disc which is pushing on a nerve. Although I am showering her in sympathy, I am aware of the fact that she could not make it to the kitchen whilst I carried out the install. Therefore, I was safe. I will pay at some point though.
I notice the power display goes down on the remote but not on the battery - what has your range experience been like? I have the lower range kit and when power level depleted on the display, the battery still has some juice? 😊
Hi Stephen, yeah, the battery indicator on the display and the battery level indicator on the actual battery don't seem to be linked...oddly. My range isn't as good as you''d expect. Please see my reply to James Williams below for details, just to save me cut and pasting again 😆. Cheers for commenting.
@@CampervanHabitude read your other post, and my problem is identical, although with smaller battery the range is awful - similar responses to my query from switch with no real feeling they're interested. I upgraded from older bulkier system, but feel I may have to reinstall it to have range access again, and write off the upgrade as a waste of my money in my circumstances
Hi Sid, I am going to have a fiddle with it as I have a friend who ordered a kit too. He has 'S' bars but, he has assured me that he managed to get his to fold with some effort. Thanks for commenting. 👍
@@CampervanHabitude Hi Just received my kit (apart from 2 max batteries and controller they say I should have them next week) and was watching your video again to get some tips and noticed at 20:41 you have a bit missing that fits inside the magnetic ring on the pedal unless you have now fitted it.
@@sid669907 Ahh, that's likely to be the brushes, or at least a part that looks like they're brushes. As I wasn't using a universal bracket and the actual magnet ring bolted to the pedal, I figured I didn't need to fit it. I do still have the part if I need it though. Good luck with yours.
Mount the bracket in using the security mounting position. See page 25 in the manual. You also position the pedal sensor on the wrong tube. I do have a question regarding the size of the pedal sensor cable - it’s a bit too long so it dangles a bit on mine, any suggestions on what to do there? Another thing worth pointing out is that you can’t roll the bike without a rear rack as the wheel doesn’t turn backwards very easily.
Yes, I believe I can alter the mounting bracket but, haven't got round to that yet. The pedal sensor looked too far away on the tube shown and the alternative of removing the bracket lugs din't sit comfortably with me. TBH, it's working fine so I'm happy enough at the moment. That said, it'll be easy enough to move if need be. With regard to the dangling cable, it's a little difficult to comment without seeing it. Is is so much that it gets in the way or effects the ride? I was considering a rack at one stage, as the roll has always been a little unstable. However, I could never add any extra weight now. Good luck with yours and cheers for commenting.
@@CampervanHabitude Cheers. The battery mount actually sticks through the front wheel spokes making it impossible to roll when folded, without the rack. I’ve given up on making it light so I’ve decided to get a rack and roll it properly when needed instead of carrying it. I feel there’s definitely a market for a light weight foldable electric bike at a reasonable price point. Bromptons are far too heavy and the electric model is a bit steep given the competition. All the best!
I'm told you can. I have a mate who has an s bar who has managed to. I also believe the whole unit is adjustable so should close on the m bar after adjustment so, you may want to double check before taking drastic action. Folding issue aside, it is a great kit.
Nice job ... Thanks for the video.. i would have narrated much more while cycling though to keep it more interesting.... Best thing here would be to get yourself if you have not already tried onto a brompton Ebike and then this swytch conversion.. and do a comparison ( in Europe the maximum speed is 25 KMH ( 15.5 MPH ) .. I have no idea never been on either.. but i enjoyed the video much appreciated.... 2 questions though.. 1 ) what is the extra weight with the kit from Swytch and2) and how does the bike function when the battery is depleted on the Swytch if it happened ? 🙂
Hi John, many thanks for commenting. To be honest, I just intended on riding around the town to show how well the bike performed but I totally understand what you're saying. In fact, in my follow up vlog 'Brompton Swytch Kit battery mount update', I provide more of a narrative during my ride. Yes, max speed is 15mph here and no, I've never been on an electric Brompton either. Regarding question one, I did mention the weight difference in the vlog - I think it was an extra 3 kilos, which makes the M6L rather heavy. Re' question two, in my follow up vlog I ride up Porthill bank again but the battery cuts out for a very short time (if you watch it, you will see the battery light go out on the handle bar mount). At that point it was a bit of a heavy slog but, it's manageable. That said, there is 30 km range in the battery so, it shouldn't happen too often.
Great video. How is the reliability? My earlier generation kit started failing after a few months use, unfortunately due to covid, this happened after the warranty period and Swytch weren't very helpful! I see they haven't really improved the quality of the PAS and other components, I would advise others against a Swytch kit, unless you can really hammer it in the warranty period to make sure you got a good one. Unlike my duffer, for me I have bought cheap and now will have to buy twice!
Hi Michael, if I'm honest, the reliability is pretty poor. I wouldn't recommend a Swytch kit which is a shame as it seemed great at first. It's battery life is poor - runs down after 5 or 6 miles. It also dies up hills which means it's not really fit for purpose. I'm currently in chats with Swycth but, I'm not holding my breath. Thanks for commenting.
@@CampervanHabitude I have to smile. I was about to buy the new switch go for the Brompton based on lots of research but mostly on your video only to read your comment about the battery losing power sooner than expected! Not smiling now unless you got some good news from Swytch?
No good news from Swytch I'm afraid. I have tried to look for my email response from them but its was a while ago so I no longer have it. The kit is nearly two years old. I still have it but don't use it much as I have a couple more Bromptons. It certainly loses power sooner than it did but it's okay on short journeys. I don't think any after market kit is going to be ideal to be honest. I'd like to know how a purpose made electric Brompton would compare. Not sure if you've seen my other Brompton vlog, released just after this one. It also shows the battery doesn't fit as first described by Swytch. You have to mount it facing the rider! I have a new channel now, dedicated just to Bromptons. Brompton Habitude. Take a look and let me know how you get on with the Swytch kit. Good luck.
That looks like a nice place to live, I was amazed how their was no trash or garbage in the roads or anywhere and people lookin all normal just walking nicely with friends or family, I like that. Here in NJ USA it kinda sucks, now. Well put it this way, if your "normal" it kinda sucks but if your a weirdo this is your time. Everything looks so much nicer and cleaner where you live, our country here in the states looks like one big advertisement with flashing business signs and retail stores all jammed together with garbage everywhere further brainwashing people etc, it's just a mess here and it's only getting worse.
Cheers Bobby. I released another vlog last week showing me doing just that. I have to admit, it wasn't something I was keen on but, Swytch have now altered their instructions to show it fitted that way. ☝
@@CampervanHabitude how do you like it after having spent a couple weeks with it that way? it makes more sense to me, ergonomically speaking. Curious as to your feedback.
@@sarcasmatron I'm getting used to it but, it's still disappointing that it isn't as advertised. The most frustrating part is, I'm constantly having to explain to people why the battery isn't facing the front, like it is on the Swytch Brompton advert. I still love the ride though.
24:25 I suspect if you mount the battery adapter on the other side of the handle bar it will no longer obstruct the folding process. It is insane that Swytch want to sell a kit that doesn't allow the bike to fold.
Hi, thanks for commenting. Yes, it is insane but, I have since released a another vlog explaining that Swytch provided further instruction to suggest just that. It is now facing the seat. Cheers.
I was iniially told i would get mine in November, still waiting, but they have assured me i will get it this month, without actually using one yet, i can see a problem with the censor which no one has mentioned. With all the wet conditions in this country most of the time, i can see those magent /censor getting covered with muck and not working so well. I would think they should be well cleaned after every trip.
That's valid point. Never thought about that but, it shouldn't be too arduous to clean. Hopefully yours should be here soon then. You'll love it, it really is great.
Hello my friend nice vidéo, when you fold the bike you have sent is not possible to fold, because the batterie must to be behind the wheel and not in the front of the weel!
Hi good content. I have received my brom kit I have M mk2 1992 . So handlebars are thicker in diameter. Also crankset where magnet is attached does not really fit any of the options, the most appropriate is B. But that does not completely aligned with sensors . Approximately 50% of PAS is lost due to this. Unfortunately Swytch R & D dont seem to have considered older models . Yeah it doesn't fold nor am I able to put controller/throttle on handle bars . Oh well. Subscribed at least.
It's great you've subscribed at least! I'd better get some more Brompton content included in future vlogs. But, check out my Thames Cultural Brompton ride vlog though. It's a great route. Yes, the older style Brompton is slightly different. I've had a few suggestions in the comments so, scan down and see if any will help with your fit. With regard to the sensor, could you cut the clip off the sensor and mount on the flat part that comes off the bottom bracket? I didn't want to start cutting away at it myself but, if there's no alternative it may have to be an option. It'd be a shame to be down on power. Cheers for the sub.
@@CampervanHabitude Thanks for the reply. I did cut off the hinge and purchased the add-on block from ebay (£15) without that It would have been impractical. I plan to take some pictures along with screenshots of your crankset to use as an example (hope you dont mind) to demonstrate to swytch that their product still needs tweaking . If their sells pitch for 'Brompton' is to stand in truth.
@@CampervanHabitude so if you reverse the battery holder to face you (using spacers on your model) then it folds with or without battery attached . Obviously I would not leave battery attached as that may fall or break battery holder.
@@CampervanHabitude Update. So having contacted Customer Support, they were able to assist me . 1. Reverse the installation from front of handle bars to back of handle bars. Allows folding of bike 2. Use the universal magnetiic disc (near side of pedal arm eg nearest to sensors.) 3. (My advice) if you can get the Brompton ESWYTCH Bike pedal sensor space mount (ebay seller 3dimensionalstudiouk) 15.99 p&p. Everything will be 👍.
Hi, sorry, this is my first time ever commenting on a youtube clip. I am awaiting delivery of my (non-Brompton) swytch kit. I suspect you MAY be able to solve your folding problem by moving the battery clamp thingy to a different position. I think it can be mounted to the handlebar mount in one of THREE positions. I suspect if you were to mount it in a higher position, it wouldn't strike the wheel when you fold the bike. Good luck!
Hi Timothy, thanks for commenting. I have a friend who also had his Swytch kit delivered the same day. He too has a Brompton but he has different handle bars. He has managed to get his to fold after a few alterations so, I will try and adjust and see how I get on. failing that, it may have to be repositioned. Enjoy your Swytch when it arrives. I absolutely love mine. Cheers. Mal.
Thanks for the reply Mal. I've just looked at the instructions manual online. It looks like the answer to your problem may lie on page 25!!! At the end of your video (where you demonstrate the way that the battery clamp prevents the full folding of the bike) it looks like the alternative mounting position on the clamp is visible. Should only take a minute or two to move it (assuming you have enough slack on the cables) I'm almost at the point of giving up on my kit ever arriving. The wait is becoming unbearable, as is the struggle up the steep hills on my commute to work! Best wishes and hope you get the folding issue sorted.
Cheers Anthony. I released another vlog a few weeks ago that covered that. However, I can't help feeling a bit cheated. It isn't exactly how Swytch advertised it. Thanks for commenting.
I used to be a Swytch Brompton Kit user, first generation with the big black box. Seeing you not able to fold correctly the Brompton because the size of the new battery holder let me speechless. How a company like Swytch can let pass this huge fail ? I’m not a Swytch user anymore after some very bad customer support experiences. I just hope your kit works well and you are happy with it.
Hi Chantal, yes, I tend to agree. It is a bit of a major error on their behalf. It has been remedied now but, it is clearly Swytch trying to find a way around their mistake. I have covered in in my follow up vlog. I am a forgiving chap though and, all that aside, it is still great to ride with the kit on. Thanks for leaving a comment. Happy riding, whatever it is you ride these days.
I saw another video that said the work around is to mount the battery holder the other way - facing the rider instead of facing forward. That fixes it. The other video referenced finding it on google if that helps. It looks like it's more ergonomically correct that way as well.
@@sarcasmatron Yes, I have already refitted facing the seat. It is covered in a follow up vlog I released. I think it looks a bit odd but, at least it folds now.
@@CampervanHabitude Oh OK, apologies. Yes a design fault. Crazy they extended the male part of the clip, so they knew they had an issue, and threw their hand up and said 'eff-it'. I am on the waiting list for a kit, so this was really helpful.
Hey did you know you can still fold the bike if you have the battery facing the other way!? Just kidding, of course. Half the comments here are of others telling you this exact same thing. Bloody idiots. Well I guess I'm one of them too now...
Warning to others - DO NOT use this company. They do not stand behind their products. I purchased ($600 for the kit) their earlier gen kit in the fall of 2021. Rode the bike a total of less than 50 miles over that time. Kept the battery charged in the 60-80% range as recommended. The battery is CRAP and will not hold a charge, causing it to cut out after 3-5 mins of use. Their answer to me - BUY ANOTHER KIT ! Buyer BEWARE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!😡😡😡😡😡
As a company they are not great IMO. It takes months and months to get your kit, whilst they have hold of your money. Then to sell something that does not do what they say it is designed to do (the Brompton won't fold) is very, very poor. Amateur at best.
Thanks for making the video. Tremendously helpful. I was about to order yesterday but I did not, luckily. A Brompton buddy sent me your video. The most important thing here is THIS ELECTRIC SWYTCH KIT DOES NOT WORK with the folding of the Brompton. ??? If it does not, then it is a major oversight. I experienced similar problem with the horizontal bar that I ordered via Ali Express that supposed to fit with the M bar of Brompton. It hit the bolt of the front wheel when folding. These 3rd party manufacturers CAN NOT ADVERTISE/CLAIM their products for Brompton if THEY DO NOT WORK WITHT THE FOLDING OF THE BROMPTON BIKE!!! 🤣Thankfully, beside (2) Manual Bromptons that I plan to convert (1) to electric, I do have a genuine Electric Brompton C line, 6 speed that does not have any problems with the folding of the bike....🥲
Hey, thanks for providing such a comprehensive comment. I totally agree, if a product is advertised to work in a certain way, it should work in that way. Particularly when it costs so much. I'm glad the vlog is being shared so others can see the pitfalls before parting with their money. In the vlog I released last week, 'Brompton Swytch Kit battery mount update', I show how Swytch have provided a solution to the problem. Thanks once again for commenting, stay tuned for more Brompton vlogs and happy Bromptoning!
Thanks for the follow-up. I think the switch side solution may be acceptable to others. However, for me, Swytch is misleading potential customers in their ads. They r still the best looking alternative to the Electric Brompton, which I own one...hahaha 🤔😀
@@vantrogh Yes, I tend to agree with you with regard to Swytch misleading. I was considering an electric Brompton before ordering but, I really didn't want to get rid of the M6L and my wife was sure to question why I had an M6L, CHPT3 and electric Brompton if I kept it so, it was the next best solution. Despite being a bit disappointed, I will persevere with the Swytch kit. Cheers. 👍
Cheers.
@@CampervanHabitude P Line is much too expensive ;-)
@@CampervanHabitudeYes, that's why I saud I saw your other video on mounting the kit on the other side. 🙂
Thank you.
Hi, I'm afraid I don't have the lights that you mention so haven't experienced the same issue. Sorry I can't help. Good luck.
Hi. Try fitting the battery mount facing the saddle.
I recognise that glass. Did it follow you home from a night out?
😆No. It was part of an over priced gift set!!!
Nice clip. I like your camera angle. Love to watch more. Happy riding. Cheers.
Cheers. Check out my 'Thames Cultural Brompton Ride 2022' too. I'm hoping to put more Brompton vlogs on my channel so, thanks for commenting.
Just hit my 100th mile with the go++ on a 26” cruiser, i love it. The wait you mention is well worth the 40% discount… but mine got delayed 3 weeks 😅
It seems more audible than my electric Brompton but I like the handlebar power switch as having to stop to engage and disengage power assist on the electric Brompton is a bind.
Yeah, it sounds a bind.
When you charge the battery, do you see any blinking signal that is being charged?
Hi. No, I don't. The only indication is, the green light is illuminated on the actually charging box. If you like Bromptons BTW, check out my other channel, 'Brompton Habitude'. Cheers. Mal.
Thank you so much.
I have a TERN folding bike. I had to place the battery facing the rider on the handlebars in order for it to fold fully. Not sure if you can do this on the Brompton.
Hi Tomas, yes, all sorted now thanks. Battery holder is now facing the seat. Thanks for commenting.
If you look further into the manual, the battery mount goes on the other side of the handlbar, facing the seat post
Yes, they have changed the manual now. There was a follow up post to this a number of months ago where I moved the carrier. Many thanks.
Mal.
@@CampervanHabitude
I would be interested in knowing in which ways is the old kit better.
Thank you.
Or me
It arrives today apparently.
Mal.
they offer an adapter to mount the battery on the luggage block which makes way more sense anyway and should solve your folding problem.
Hi, all sorted now. Swytch have changed their minds and decided it should face the seat!! 😆 Thanks for commenting.
I provided the following review on Trust Pilot:
I waited far too long for my kit to arrive with delay following delay over and over.
I was then sent the following email:
‘The light on your battery is a good indicator of charge level when charging but should not be used to determine the level of charge during your rides.

Cheers Mick, totally agree. Here's hoping! 🤞
There are revised instructions available for download on their website.
Yes, all sorted now Ken. Cheers.
My kit doesn't run. The display is flashing, I've contacted with, swytch, but they don't answer me. They have veey bad service.
That's very poor service. Do Swytch have a social media page for your region where you could add a comment, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter for example? I find that comments on these sites often prompt a response as the company don't like bad press. Good luck with sorting it. 👍
I recognise those roads I'll keep an eye open for you when I'm walking the dog. Nice video are you happy you went with the swytch
Thanks for the info
What handle bars do you have on the brompton?
M bars. 👍
Dammit, I was looking for a video like this - I will have to reassemble the battery kit tomorrow as yours.
TBH, it doesn't take too long. It's just a pain when you follow the original instruction only to find they're wrong! Good luck with it.
The bracket should be fitted facing the seat, once you do that the handle bar will fold and lock in place with no issues at all.
What is the cost for this kit?
I paid around £600 but, that was with a discount as I pre-ordered. I'm not sure what Swytch are selling them for at the moment.
Looks like fun, doesn’t stop you from panting though 😄
Your recycling bin will be full with all that cardboard!

@@CampervanHabitude The part that fits in between the two Magnetic discs www.swytchbike.com/manual.pdf
Has anyone fitted a throtle on a 6 speed Brampton with a mid handlebar?
@@Duarte_martins A rack may be on my Christmas list for next year then, Enjoy your Brompton. Cheers.
Ouch, glad I saw this, I’m on the pre order list at 60% off this Tuesday. If I can’t fold my Brompton to fit it in the bag, this is a deal breaker.
I'm told you can. I have a mate who has an s bar who has managed to. I also believe the whole unit is adjustable so should close on the m bar after adjustment so, you may want to double check before taking drastic action. Folding issue aside, it is a great kit.
You mount the battery facing back, not forwards on the handlebar. Instructions are wrong.
Reverse the battery holder and hang it over the back of the handlebars and it should fold ok.

When calculating the additional weight you forgot to deduct the weight of the original non-motor front wheel.
@@CampervanHabitude Thanks for your comment! Now I've decided against buying swytch! So hard to decide what to ride!
@@nellygeerts6790It's a lot of money to spend if it doesn't work as promised. Good luck with your search. 👍
Good luck.
GREAT VIDEO
That looks like a nice place to live, I was amazed how their was no trash or garbage in the roads or anywhere and people lookin all normal just walking nicely with friends or family, I like that. Here in NJ USA it kinda sucks, now. Well put it this way, if your "normal" it kinda sucks but if your a weirdo this is your time. Everything looks so much nicer and cleaner where you live, our country here in the states looks like one big advertisement with flashing business signs and retail stores all jammed together with garbage everywhere further brainwashing people etc, it's just a mess here and it's only getting worse.
Relocate the bracket and battery to the back of the handlebars and see if that works.
They are not optical, they are magnetic. Oh yah, good luck ever getting the kit. These guys are the worst.
Hello my friend nice vidéo, when you fold the bike you have sent is not possible to fold, because the batterie must to be behind the wheel and not in the front of the weel!
Hi Pedro, yes, all sorted now but still a little disappointing. Thanks for commenting.
By all means, use whatever you wish and hopefully they'll get it sorted. Cheers.
Allows folding of bike
2. Use the universal magnetiic disc (near side of pedal arm eg nearest to sensors.)
Should only take a minute or two to move it (assuming you have enough slack on the cables)
I'm almost at the point of giving up on my kit ever arriving. The wait is becoming unbearable, as is the struggle up the steep hills on my commute to work!
Best wishes and hope you get the folding issue sorted.
Ahh, brilliant.I shall take a look. Hold in there. The wait will be worth it. 👍
@@timothydoyle9903 oh thanks, i haven't try yet but this will work.
If you think thats heavy, try an electric Carrera from halfords 😅
😆
Turn the battery to inside front opposite of where it is now and it will fold
I am thinking on designing one with my 3d printer...
WOULD YOU BE HAPPY SELLING IT TO ME
I REALLY WANT A BROMPTONS WITH SWYTCH KIT
Mount the battery facing back towards the saddle, rather than out forwards of the handlebars. The instructions are wrong!
Yes, cheers Brian. I released a second vlog the following week, pointing that out. Bit of a design fault by Swytch.
@@CampervanHabitude Oh OK, apologies. Yes a design fault. Crazy they extended the male part of the clip, so they knew they had an issue, and threw their hand up and said 'eff-it'. I am on the waiting list for a kit, so this was really helpful.
@@TR4zest 😆I know. What on earth were Swytch thinking. I have to say, still a great improvement on the M6L though.
Hey did you know you can still fold the bike if you have the battery facing the other way!?
Just kidding, of course. Half the comments here are of others telling you this exact same thing. Bloody idiots. Well I guess I'm one of them too now...
😂Any comment is a good comment. It's good to talk! Cheers. Mal.
Cheers. 👍
switch the bracket on the handlebars to face the rider not outwards - it then apparently folds ok.
