Great to see the Cobra back out for another good vid... Our 3 cobras here in Byron Bay have all had full aluminum/carbon upgrade kits, 15T pinions, custom paint and we are putting them thru the ringer :) Built a couple of ramps... break fix break fix... so much fun. Really enjoyed the driving adjustment required going from a light plastic car to a heavier metal car... power to weight has dropped... so a bigger motor and esc is probably next ;) Diff issues are a problem... any good vids on how to strengthen or improve them would be great! Keep up the good work bro! Thanks :)
I'm glad your having fun with your machines!👌
Yeah as iv mentioned numerous times😄they need a few upgrades and for even more strength a few diy mods before you can really beat on them, but once upgraded they are good cars!
Sad to say🥺 iv not found any solution to the diff issues(major problem)
In all honesty, I have no idea why mine are lasting because I actually removed the shims and now the outdrives are extremely sloppy but they somehow keep working great🤔
I have the Blast pulled apart so I'll do a bit of experimenting, never know!
Thanks for the support bud!😉🤘
Pretty decent speed out of it mate! 👍
Cheers man🤘
Pretty good for a basher set-up!
Great vid mate! Still worth buying one? Anything else out similar? really like this, Would be a good track driver with some tweaks? Cheers from WA man
Thank you!
I would say for track racing you would need to replace the centre diff with a alternative diff or possibly just swap the o-rings for thicker o-rings as it never seems to hold oil for long.
Bashing is a different story, I wouldn't recommend bashing them and I'd suggest staying at 3s maximum, 4s eats the diffs in no time.
Sad because they drive really nice.
Very well done. Nice video.
Thanks Madness😎👍
Nice Vid! If I've understood well with some mods you have fixed several durability issues but in the end the issue of weak diffs can't be solved yet and this is one of the most common issue many brands/models have Said that what is the most durable budget rc car in your garage for bashing that can manage 3s whithout going in pieces every 20 minutes? Thanks for your valuable suggestion. ciao
Diff issues everywhere😄
The only real budget car I that really has lasted is the FS Marauder, I have had a diff click ever since I got it pretty much but it keeps going, iv only needed to change 1 diff and 1 spur.
The drive shafts and plastic parts are extremely strong!
Cool cool man good speed run. And nice build bro 👊😀
Thanks mate!👊😁
Yeah im happy with 73kph off-road, this ones not made for speed, it's made for flips🤣🤘
I might try 4s. You do give me the confidence to try it. But it’s those diff that play in my mind.😩. Good vid👌🏼
Do it man, 4s power🤪
I'll replace the diffs if they go pop.
Cheers mate😉🤘
@@rccrazy haha . Maybe if I bring on the throttle slowly they might survive. 🤣. Although I havent tried 4s with the thicker diff oils. Maybe tmrw 🤔
Thicker oil will to a degree prevent gears stripping, but technically only because there not moving as fast or going through such abrupt changes in direction.
That won't help the crown or pinion gears though😵💥😄
@@rccrazy yeah I know. The crown and pinion needs like a complete sealed housing. And that might resolve some issues, instead of the grease spinning off the gears.
They do leak at the outdrives quite dramatically don't they!😫
Another awesome video 🤩👍
Thanks Rene😉👍
Im really enjoyeing speed runs😄
I finally got around to modifying my cobra a little, I ran it kin a 3s stock standard speed was 43klm/h then I put an4s and only the steering would respond, swapped esc with a 120a surpass, put the 4s in works, top speed 65klm/h. Now I have a motor surpass 3674 2250kv or a 3670 2150 arriving this week. Will try the 2250 see what speed we get :)
As long as 2250kv is more kv's and higher watts than the last motor that got 65kph with you should gain speed, if its lower kvs you'll need to swap the pinion to a much larger pinion for higher speed.
The. 65kph was on the stock vex motor.
It depends which one you have, multiple different versions.
One has a 3650 3300kv motor and another has a 2230kv motor.
I would think you have the 2230kv one as 3300kv would get SO hot on 4s in this car.
You will definitely need to gear up in any case I think, biggest pinion you can fit with a big 3670 motor👌
I think it’s a : 3660 2000KV
Ok so yes I would still go the largest pinion possible with the larger 3670 or 74 especially only being 2250kv, I have run the 3674 2250kv motor on 6s for speedruns without any problems so 4s will be fine.
You could probably gear up the stock motor and get a bit higher top speed, I would 100% have no worries about running a 2000kv motor of any size on 6s
Oh btw, subbed & liked & best wishes from Scotland.! 😜 👍
So sorry i missed this comment!
Thank you so much👍
Hey mate nice setup !! I noticed you don't run the standard wheels they come with ... Can you tell me the diameter and the width of the tyers ? . Did you go smaller on the wheels to save the drive line ? Thanks mate
Hey mate.
These wheels are actually bigger than the stock wheels and I mainly changed them because the stock ones don't like 4s.
Not sure what the exact size was but they were Remo Hobby monster truck wheels, if you look them up you should find the dimensions🤞
Sorry I couldn't help more!
@@rccrazy sweet mate thanks for the reply
Not a problem👍
Wow. Super nice 👍
Pretty respectable speeds out of that rig. Looked plenty stable.
Oh yes, it's extremely stable, one think iv always loved about this car.
And yeah that speed considering the all round set-up is quite good.
Im loving these speed runs😄👍
Hey man good set up! Any links for the rear shocky?
Thanks👍

Ahh yea i know about this AliExpress they got loads of stuffs but takes ages to get here. I did get my alloy swing arms and alloy shocky towers from AliExpress good stuffs😄. Cheers man.
Yeah iv not used aliexpress myself but everyone seems to love them so I assumed you do also, oops😄👍
Yeah the only thing i dont like is the shipping takes so long hahaha.. the alloy shocky tower and swing arm i bought from them takes a month to arrive..haha but im very satisfied with the quality though looks very good.
Hey! Any of yous got any spare front dog bone for cobra violence i can buy please? Ive ordered parts from my local rc shop.. all parts came through except for the front dog bone which they said in back order dont know when it arrive😅..
Hey Bro what size are the shocks you use length etc.
Hey🤙 the brand is GPM and I think these ones are 115mm, they work perfect for my bashing👌
I have links but only for Australian sellers/companies!
Where did you grab the alloy swing arms from
I got mine from a ebay Australia a few years ago, I don't recommend using them though unless you have upgraded everything else or have a unlimited supply of spare parts.
Swingarms are the last thing you want to upgrade on a car like this simply because they are a good breaking point part as they are MUCH easier to replace than a diff housing or chassis which is easily done with these vrx and ftx cars ESPECIALLY with alloy arms.
What are those tires? I've been looking for some tires for my cobra as the stock ones have no foams and are way too soft.
They are Remo Hobby monster truck wheels I got from ebay Australia a year or so ago, im not sure where else to get them sorry.
They may be available on ebay still🤔
What's your experience with the diffs on that thing mate.?
I've blown a couple in mine.. I'm running 3S, using pretty much the same motor, a H/W 120A, SC8 esc & mainly running on tarmac.
Apart from that though I'm happy enough with it.
I'm not a fan of the vrx diffs, iv blown many😕
They are quite weak and the oil doesn't like staying in the diffs.
I think I've just been extremely lucky with the current diffs I'm using because they just keep going.
@@rccrazy yip, they certainly do don't they..
Stay safe out there mate & best wishes from Scotland.! 😜 👍
What are some of the biggest weaknesses you have found with the Cobra?
Diffs, driveshafts, arms, tie bars, chassis, basically everything is weak compared to many other 1/10 cars and LITERALLY every 1/8 car is 10 x stronger.
I highly recommend steering clear of VRX, they have been my most disappointing cars I would say and a money pit at that if you choose to upgrade, you will need every upgrade and they still break easy even after fully upgrading😖
@@rccrazy jeez, that's disheartening.
I really kind of thought they were pretty decent given how cheap they are.
I wouldn't ever really run more than 4s if I were to get one.
@motabikeboy honestly mate you are definitely better off getting a well known brand, the VRX is cheap because it's not really a 1/8 as they call it and you seriously do get what you pay for in this case, not positive sadly.
Don't worry, I've spent a good $1k Australian trying to get my 2 to last more than one run and they still blow a diff or snap a axle every drive, that was all on 3s and 4s so I would say it's a 2s car to stay safe.
You will pay more up front but please🙏 for your own benefit save what you were going to spend on this and buy a Arrma, Traxxas, HPI or any of the well know basher brands.
@@rccrazy your honest opinion is VERY appreciated, this is the exact type of honesty I look for. Because I really am done with tinkering and fixing things, I just want something that works without fail. Thank you
That's why I am doing these videos mate, just trying to give a honest opinion from the experience I've had.
My opinion on the Cobra has changed only through experience so it's my duty to elaborate I guess, that goes for anything in life though not just RCs😅
Hope you find an affordable but ready to bash rig you like, they are price but all the new Arrma 4s rigs are AMAZING🤩
I think this cobra is lighter than jlb cheetah so you can increase the motor kv to 2500 or others below than 3000kv and hit 100kmh with 4s
There are many different ways to setup RCs, I prefer low kv large can motors and high gearing, this did over 100kph on 4s on the road.
But it's not just kv that you look at because if you tried to run a 3650 3000kv in a cobra on 4s no matter the gearing it WILL overheat.
A 3674 3000kv motor yes sure it will easily run on 4s but then you WILL destroy diffs and driveshafts because they are so weak and a 3674 3000kv has so much more power than this car can deal with.
@@rccrazy i mean the same size motor and same kv as jlb cheetah not the stock cobra 3650 size with high kv, definitely it will heat fast. if i'm not mistake cheetah comes with 3670 and around 2500kv.
@enricorussel2264 I don't know what motor the cheetah comes with but honestly it's not something I think about, this was just seeing what my setup could do.
@@rccrazy nevermind bro it's just my opinion and suggestion. Keep posting good video soon.
do you think a 3800kv motor running 22T pinion on 4s will overheat the motor? and if it will what pinion should i use?
22t won't fit, 19t is the biggest that will fit.
I run 2250kv with a 19t pinion on 4s and it gets hot so I'm sure you'll fry a 3800kv on 22t😵
3800kv with a 11t or 12t sounds a bit safer.
@@rccrazy wait so is the motor your using 2250kv or 2150kv as you said in the vid?
Possibly the 2150kv motor, this car has been gone for a long time.
But what I'm getting at is if you want to run 4s you want to stick with quite low gearing with a 3800kv or get a lower kv motor.
For off-road 1/10 cars my personal limit with 4s is a LARGE size 3000kv motor MAXIMUM!
But I prefer lower kv and higher voltage and gearing for efficiency and cooler running temperatures.
@@rccrazy I'm probably gonna use the same setup as u did thanks for the advice! Edit: can you please make a video about cutting holes in the body for airflow to cool down the motor. I'm not sure where to cut the holes and if it will affect run
I would recommend just using a cooling fan rather than drilling holes, holes can also cause weak spots in the shell.
What highest size batteries can you go on a standard vrx cobra
The biggest iv run is 4500mah 4s so maybe 6000mah 3s will fit.
Top speed with a 6000 on this thing would be 57kmh. 55kmh is with the standard battery as I've seen in another video. This was even done on an Athletics Track. Please explain these speeds?
It's not a stock motor or esc.
I got the car brushed and converted it to brushless
Any new link to the motor and esc? The old one expired
This is the closest I can find in the way of the motor
nl.aliexpress.com/item/1005001844112187.html?gatewayAdapt=glo2nld
And I highly recommend a Hobbywing esc or another quality brand esc, most of these budget escs like Goolrc and Surpass have delay or glitch issues so you'll have a much better experience with a good responsive esc👌
Thankyou, do you have a msg board or Facebook page for general advise? I didn’t want to post question for other cars here.
Your welcome.
No sorry I don't have a Group page on Facebook anymore just my normal RC Crazy page.
You are more than welcome to ask about other cars on any of my video, if I can help I will, if not I apologise in advance🙂
O thank you, i have a Jjrc q146 brushes, the wltoys metal bits fit on it so i converted it, i took a brushless from one of my banged up Jjrc q117 and used the wltoys 144001 centre shaft and spur gear put in works all ok just sounds a little rough and twitchy and suggestions?
If you are using the jjrc pinion with the wltoys spur then that's the noice and most likely already damage!
You can not use them together as the jjrc gears are mod0.6 and most wltoys spurs and pinion gears are mod0.7, completely different size teeth and DO NOT mesh up together!
The teeth must be the same size on both gears otherwise they with 100% be damaged.
How long is it in length?
320mm axle to axle
Is it 320mm from the front bumper to rear bumper? Cuz if so that's Like a 1/14 scale, im confused
No axle to axle, wheel to wheel.
It's basically a normal 1/10 size car.
Mate can you help me with my cobra I bought a new battery 5000mah and it's still the same speed, the whole reason I bought the car was it seemed amazing on grass which it is but my dog would catch it easily can you help me ?
Mah is the capacity, it dose not give you a higher top end speed but will help battery lag/sag and give you longer run time.
You need higher voltage to go faster, BUT, you have to make sure the ESC and motors is capable of doing so.
If your currently using a 2s you will have to jump up to 3s, using 3s jump to 4s and so on.
If the ESC is 3s capable but the motor gets super hot you will then need to change the gearing, easiest way is use a smaller pinion/motor gear.
See how you go🤞
Would you be able to repost some of links of the parts that ebay couldn't find. Because by the looks of it every off road car needs to be upgraded to get good speed
Not all RCs need upgrading to go fast but the VRX cars are not as described, it's not 1/8 for starters it's a longish 1/10, plus comes with a rather small electronic system, I got brushed versions and upgraded, but the parts are quite weak so upgrading isn't really a great idea.
I'll try and find a link for the motor I used, just incase I can't find one its a (Surpass Hobby 3670 2250kv motor)
ESC I used is available everywhere (Hobbywing WP-SC8 120A 4s esc)
Maximum size pinion for this set-up would be 17-18 tooth, mod1.
And I was using 4s lipo
@@rccrazy im glad you know a lot and that you can help, since you mentioned it's not worth upgrading ,otherwise I will sell my vrx cobra and maybe buy a faster one, do you have any examples of faster rc cars that's amazing on the grass like the cobra, let's just say I have a whippet as a dog hahahah.
You would be better off getting a 1/10 or 1/8 Arrma off-road rig, much stronger and faster.
The 1/10 brushless versions are 3s and do about 60-70kph.
The 1/8 versions are 6s, do about 80kph and super tough!
Get a truggy like a Kraton or truck like a BigRock if you plan on trick jumping (backflips and stuff) or a buggy, Typhon for fast flattish surfaces and whippets😅👌
So basically its not a cobra anymore with all those parts its something else.
It's all still vrx parts other than my mod parts so how is it not a cobra?
@@rccrazy Mate, It's the best VRX Cobra Ive ever seen run on a footy oval.. I'd love to see it run with a set belted road tyres, It'd be sick!! - I really like this build but some people can't appreciate or understand it's still a bloody Cobra and a Cobra it will be. Excellent Hopups bro, Great job!!💯🤙
Haha thanks👍
It's been in bits fir quite a while now but I may get it up and running again some time and chuck on some Hoons or some other street tyre👌
@@rccrazy Yeah do it man!! I'll buy a front row seat! - A lot of us are into Some of the Chinese cars, They aren't all crap, Modding them out and seeing how quick we can get em is part of the fun of the hobby for me...Its cool coz it means our high end stuff has lesser chance of being written off and we can mess with these things.. The Cobra is one of em, It has good areo's for a start mate... Lookin forward to if you ever get around to it bro!! You are the crazy as a cut snake when it comes to shit like this.. Lets go for 70Mph first then a Hunjee hahaha 😂👍👍
Let's start high, 1st goal 100mph🤪
Yeah your spot on, not all are super high quality but it doesn't mean we should throw in the towel.
The Cobra has given me a hard time mostly in the way of gear failure but I think I know enough now to get it back up and running at least for speedruns👌
