    Just bought a south Florida 2001 SC2 with 64500 miles on the clock. Thanks for putting this together. I did not know about the engine block drain so that was a big help. Getting the coolant and coolant flush today in anticipation of another 65 degree day on Tuesday.
    I remember all the Saturns we have had over the decades starting with a brand new 1992 Saturn SL2, three more SL2's in the late 1990 model years and three more SC2's in the 2000 and 2002 model years. No denying it I am a fanboy of the Saturn lineup.

    After watching this I feel like I know less about changing the coolant than I did before I started. Not because the video is poorly done, the video is actually awesome and informative. It just made me realize how much I honestly don't know, and trying to stack all this information together before I go out to my car is not working. So I think I'm dumb to this.

    @7:38 Thank you so much for the panorama of the location for the Engine Block Plug (@1:14 it is not clear for such specialist as me where it is), I found it and used for flushing coolant in our 2001 Saturn SL2. I did it like a year ago, but now was looking again for that bolt, since think to replace the Heater Core (no heat in Saturn, and never was, we bought it used, I'll try to correct it). I also have a new Radiator for Saturn, so that plug location is essential indeed. The film was very helpful, thank you again.

    Thank you for this video. I might never have located the drain bolt on the engine block without your help. I have chosen to do a full flush and replace with Peak Universal fluid (which is sort of dayglow yellow/orange) on my recently acquired 2002 Saturn SL1 with 150K miles. It's service record is unknown, so I am doing a full fluid replacement, as I come up to speed. I do not want to stick with Dexcool. Honda didn't like it, so neither do I.

    • @ivermec-tin666

      Peak coolant is a 10 year, 300K mile coolant. It beats the pants off of Dexcool in terms of specs.

    These Saturns are great I had a 1996 and gave it to my father in law he's driving it with 240,000 miles on it and i replaced it with a 1999 sl 1. The SL 1 i have now is great the only issue is it tends to burn rich so about every two months I have to take the EGR valve off and clean it up with some PB blaster then put it back together.

      I'll do what I can. These videos are done in my spare time or when my car decides to act up. Nothing has happened lately to warrant another video but don't worry, I have a few things I want to take care of soon. Really want to get my sun roof working again so may show that and possibly a timing chain video. This all depends on how long this vehicle lasts in commuter traffic and cost to keep driving.

    I once topped off the dexcool with the green antifreeze (out of on the road necessity) and the next day the aluminum head cracked. The mechanic told me that it was the mixture of these two types of antifreeze that caused the head to crack.

    Pretty sure the manual says to use Dex-Cool (Orange) and not standard "Green" coolant. Suppose to be less corrosive to aluminum radiators. I would think you could use green if you flush every 1-2 years. Definitely wouldn't mix the two, go Orange or Green.

    Great job, man. Just wondering if you if it's the same configuration for the 6 cyl Saturn Vue. I have a 2007, and the light is on on the dash, but the temp gauge does not run hot; maybe it's the sensor going bad ?

  • @jordanfrary3876
    @jordanfrary3876 8 років тому +1

    how long did you wait between running the engine to op temp and flushing the liquid out? I've been meaning to do this a day after I get off work but from the minute I get in the driveway I have about 3 hours of sunlight and I thought rule of thumb was at least an hour before even touching any hoses, drains, etc

    • @jungleking007Channel
      @jungleking007Channel 8 років тому +1

      +Jordan Frary technically want to wait until cool(safety first!), but I gave everything 5 -10 minutes before draining again because I too was on a time crunch. Be careful if you do this as the fluids well be very hot and system may still be under pressure! Make sure you wear proper PPE when doing this. Good luck!

    • @heyitschinoable
      @heyitschinoable 8 років тому +2

      Jordan Frary You can always pull the thermostat out, that way you dont have to wait till it reaches op temp. With the t stat out coolant will flow without hvlaving to wait on the t stat to open.

    When I drain the coolant in my 2002 Saturn and fill the tank up it will not pull the coolant from the tank. I have to take the upper radiator hose off and pour coolant down in the motor before it will pull the coolant out of the fill tank.

    Does anyone know by chance where is the engine plug on 2003 Chevrolet Cavalier? Thank you for the film, very helpful for my work on 2001 Saturn. The torque for that Engine Coolant Plug for 2001 Saturn SL2 is 22 Ft-lbs, if someone needs. It is in my Shop Service Manual for 2000-2001 Saturn S-series: Coolant Drain-to-Plug/Block 30 Nm = 22 Ft-lbs.
    Update: 2003 Chevrolet Cavalier doesn't have the Engine Block Plug similar to the one that on 2001 Saturn SL2 has. I looked through Shop Service Manual for Chevy, and they don't mention any such plug. Instructions advise to drain the coolant via Drain Cock only. So not every car has that Engine Coolant Plug.

      It is not Dexcool as mentioned in the video somewhere. It's the standard Glycol (green) found in most vehicles. Had just gotten new video software and was trying out the blurring feature. Since I'm not sponsored by anyone, I'm trying to not bring in brand names as best as I can since there are so many out on the market. I have my preferences and figured I'll let everyone else decide what they want to use. I preferred the concentrate for this task and to mix myself because it is cheaper especially when doing a full flush and fill. It also helps to have extra after to fill as needed or when leaks sprout up Which is my case at this time. hopefully a video to come showing the intake manifold coolant outlet repair.

    • @jungleking007Channel

      The standard for Saturn has been DexCool, typical color for it is orange. I switch to the more universal coolant, hence the flush I did. If you don't know what was previously used, consider doing a full flush and fill. mixing different coolants has the potential to damage components.

  • @69in89

    Would you recommend an SL2 DOHC W/ a 5-speed manual? Personally, I think Honda's and Toyota's are a bit overrated. I have a '96 accord automatic and it calls for expensive OEM brand fluids in nearly all departments on top of living proof that aftermarket parts don't last as long on this car either. I'd like to get an American car due to cheaper ownership, parts, and fluids that are available in most places, but american 4 cylinder cars are not known for reliability or longevity. I'd like to get a 91-02 saturn, but I have read on multiple sites that they're notorious for excessive oil consumption with no legit permanent solution. However, I was also reading that these pre-2003 saturns last a long time, can get up to 41MPG, and parts are cheap and widely available.

    • @jungleking007Channel
      @jungleking007Channel 9 років тому +1

      +Doug Davis I've liked my Saturns, and I'm also a sucker for almost anything with a manual transmission. I feel like I have more control of the car. The 02 SL2 in this video was a replacement for the 98 SL2 accidentally killed with a light pole. Used it in some earlier videos. If you can find a Saturn S-series of any vintage that has been taken care of and you take care of it, then it should last you a while. Concerning the oil consumption issue. Both of mine eat oil. Its around a quart every 1k miles. not bad compared to others. the issue is mainly with the piston rings getting clogged with carbon build up. The permanent fix from what I've read is drilling some oil drain back holes on the piston so the oil doesn't sit in the channel and burn up. I haven't done so but other have and it has worked really well! Mine gets about 36mpg and that's without a 5th gear swap. Problem with these cars, though is the availability of US made parts. for cars this old the repair parts manufacturing is getting shipped off overseas so quality is going down the tube. Good Luck! hopefully you can find a decent one!

    • @jungleking007Channel
      @jungleking007Channel 6 років тому +3

      Dexcool(orange) has the potential to damage seals and head gasket according to many posts online. I chose to switch to the cheaper more readily available ethylene glycol(green) coolant. Does the same thing as the "orange" which is to keep the water from freezing in cold weather. If this car had a more complex system I would stay with the OE fluid. Haven't had any fluid issues since the change.

      Yes, DexCool is the preferred coolant type for Saturn's and all GM vehicles. The reason for not using DexCool in my case is because I wanted a universal type in my car. Dex does have additional additives, but it's not going to negatively impact cooling or drivability by switching to "green." If you do use a non standard coolant make sure to fully flush the system to reduce chances of cross contamination. Thanks for watching!
