  • Overload relay is used in many application to prevent the damaging condition from happening. They are in many cases mounted on the contactor to make up a starter EXAMPLE direct online, star-delta and forward and reverse starters and so on.
Thermo overload relay is operated by a bimetallic strip which is around a heating element where the load current goes through.
When the excessive current pass through the heating element, a normally closed contact is opened which disconnect contactor control circuit from the power hence protecting from overload current.
They feature an adjustable current range with manual or automatic reset option.
Thermo overload relay is every cheaper solution to motor overload protection
Thermal overload relays are economic electromechanical protection devices for the main circuit.

Yes this is a great video. When I saw you opened it up, you pushed my understanding further. I’m wiring a lathe tool changer turret and it has one of these thermal switches on it. I now know why,
    Thank you.

    Another good video !
    SCANERIO :
I can't think of any other use for the NC auxiliary on the O.L to be wired on a light somewhere say : in a office to tell me my motor is not running anymore because the NC has opened indicating the bi metallic metal has tripped the NC switch .
What other applications are typically used for NC or NO of the Auxiliaries ?
