Well done. The video was concise without being too brief or rushed. It didn't bounce around or repeat the points you already made. It was well structured and it covered why Wiley is known as the Godfather of Grime. Like him or not, this is why he is important to Grime and why he is known as he is.
Wiley was actually a DJ at the very start in S.S Crew. So he’s literally covered everything. Fun fact: he also encouraged skepta to start MC’in who infact was also a DJ at the start
You are right he was a DJ and before SS crew Wiley and Target along with others were also in an RnB group called ‘Cross Colours’. I ended up shortening the video and leaving this bit out. I actually have a video called ‘becoming Skepta: from DJ to MC’ where I breakdown the events that lead to Skepta picking up the mic, Wiley was heavily involved.
This was AN education as someone UK born only really followed HIPHOP 👏 👍 😂 This makes me feel proud to be British, to see a BRITISH MC,Producer, innovative, philanthropist,& create a MOVEMENT just AMAZING. Fantastic video a real History lesson.
Massive fan of grime and was at the right age to have grown up on it from the start, we call them the grime days( the high school period) this was a good watch bro well done
Thanks for your support. I’m pulling together more videos, so hopefully the more I put up the more the views will come. I rely on people like yourself - who are willing to watch a video that doesn’t already have masses of views. Thanks for watching.
Thought I had a fair bit of knowledge on Wiley. After watching this I now know I new practically nothing lol. Must’ve taken you ages to source all of those clips. Great vid, can’t wait for the next one 💯‼️
U missed the garage tracks he dun nn put out as phase one (was why he's second album was called 2nd phaze) that was after the jungle start n before the pay as you GI crew were created
I always knew that where’s my brother was a shoot at Doogz but I always thought the “where’s my brother” line was about Dizzee. Wiley has called Dizzee his “little brother” in many songs and mentioned it in his autobiography. I thought it represented how Dizzee left the grime scene around that time and went mainstream, and also because they hadn’t spoke in years.
Hey, I think that is often the way people perceive the “where’s my brother” line. However, I would say “where’s my brother” is a reference to Crazy Titch, Doogz brother. As I’m sure you are probably a aware Titch got a life sentence for murdering producer Holmes over some bars Shaba Shak wrote for Doogz. So “where’s my brother” highlights that Titch is behind bars for life over his brothers beef.
I really loved this bro! As a Major Major Wiley fan I say this was well thought out and documented.. P.s I actually thought “Where’s my Brother” was about Dizziee, but I stand corrected lol
Thanks for your support. I’m back and will be posting multiple videos each week going forward. A lot of people thought where’s my bro was about dizzee do you weren’t alone on that one. Respect 👊🏼
Mate this comment haunts me. You are so right. I should have had a war dub segment but I didn’t want the video too long. I’m doing a separate on on his top war dubs. What’s your pick? Conspiracy has got to be up there.
Wiley was in a crew with Maxwell D and Target called Ladies Hit squad mainly on Rinse. Before that I remember when Wiley and Plague were on Rinse when it was a Jungle station around 1997 MC Stamina was on there way before the two big tunes he had. Personally I feel Grime was a natural progression and there were plenty of people who contributed. DJ Narrows, Master Stepz, Wookie, Zed Bias, So Solid, Heartless Crew and many others were all making darker garage beats before Wiley made Eskimo. Slimzey used to play drum and bass beats like "Freak show" by DJ Krust at half speed on their early PAYG sets
I completely agree. We often focus on Wiley and he did play a huge part in the development of the scene…but there were many other artists and producers who played their part. Grime was certainly a natural development, the UK finding it’s own authentic voice of ‘the street’ like hip hop/ rap is to the US. Jon E cash, Musical mob and Youngstar were all very important too. Youngstar was the first to move to the 8 bar switch which is synonymous with grime. Slimzee slowed down jungle beats too, he really evolved the sound with his sets and the producers followed. Thanks for watching and a top comment, great insight.
Thanks for watching and taking the time out to comment. I’m back now and will be putting out multiple videos each week. If you have any content you are particularly interested in let me know 👊🏼
Well technically Marvel created the first grime tune with ‘adamantium rage’ from a wolverine video game in 1994. So that makes Mickey Mouse the true father of grime.
Thanks for watching and taking the time out to comment 👊🏼. There will be a lot more of these mini docs coming. Jammer pt1 is out if you’re interested. Thanks again.
Truth though is so solid oh no was the first grime track even dillema more fire oi or dizzee string ho has to be considered but Wiley took it from 138 to 140 bpms made it a sound rather than random garage instrumentals that were bass/sub heavy but what do I kno lol b na a jab at ur doc which was really well put together and the hosting/narration was really done well too
Doing one for Jammer would be great, I think he's overlooked in the scene, he as well as Wiley have made great impact to keep the scene pushing with producing, projects, and the culture. Also Skepta, its only fair
Kosha Palmer Jammer is a great shout. I completely agree, he has been massively influential but almost hides in the shadows. I will for sure pull a video together on him.
How about JME? Creating BBK with mixtapes, tees etc, production, his independent approach, Integrity and reliving pirate radio with Grime MC FM? This Wiley one is wicked.
Also should be noted how much music he give away. Steps 1-20 was fire, and he did it to piss a label off 🤣. Also crash bandicoot freestyle could have been there. Wiley is the goat man
Skepta jme wiley dizze tinchy stryda rolll deep pay as u go eskimo dance rinse fm . Clashes with kano ghetts goodz dot rotten lethal b the movement countless incrementals making nicoles and murkle man are just SOME of the reasons his the god farther
Impeccable list. Very true. I have videos coming focusing on Wiley v Doogs and the making of murkle man. He’s done too much to for the culture it’s hard to know where to start. Thanks for watching 🤙🏼
We need escimo dance back and sidewinder and it needs to have the same levels of energy and talent on the stage !!!!! The seen is not what it once was and that makes me sad ! These new kids want to be a star with one tune or or radio verse ! Non of them want to put in the hard work first ! The scene don’t work like that ! All the legends of the scene were working hard for years on pirates and raves before they got full recognition!!!! And if you put in a good foundation your chances of having longevity will increase!!!!
Love this. Big up 👊🏽 A great watch 🧊
Thanks for watching and for commenting. Mad respect 👊🏼

This video is absolutely amazing. People been throwing dirty on wileys name recently this video serves as a reminder not to forget the real 🐐
For real mate the guy created an entire scene the morphed into a genre.

Actually it was President T, who got Skepta into MC'ing.

Fantastic video mate. Been a fan of Wiley for years. However, you have educated me on the true history of GOG

The grime sound was started by Dizzee Rascal back in 1998-1999 in Langdon Park School.
