Wonderful carol, we sang this at Mass on sunday, and it was wonderful.
This carol has such a hauntingly beautiful melody. The lyrics convey the simple and powerful Magnificat of the Virgin Mother of Christ. I cannot listen to this piece enough. the directing is superb and these choir members are following the tempo and dynamics of the music perfectly. While the youngsters in this choir are undoubtedly grown by now, I hope they still remember the days when they sang this music and how much it has pleased so many people.
This clip comes from Songs of praise (Christmas special) Winchester cathedral 20/12/1998.
This particular episode was presented by Sir Harry Secombe with readings and poems from Buster Merryfield and Francis Barber.
In The Bleak Midwinter is a very beautiful, moving Carol. Words by poet Christina Rosetti and music by The Planets composer Gustav Holst
Music is one of the most beautiful phenomena of the Universe.
This christ mas morn, I listened to this song many 10 times and am more deeply touched each time. It is absolutely beautiful... So wonderous and amazing to think of the sheer power of an angel, his descent to earth with a message of love, peace and hope...
It humbles one who knows the magnitude of our Father...
Peace to all for 2010..
The most beautiful Christmas song. The British have such lovely carols.
Angelic and sublime, exquisite, filled with innocence and truth.
They capture the essence of this song! Truly this melody is exquisite! Singing it is also an amazing experience.
I heard this for the first time at Worcester cathedral cathedral Christmas eve 2018 so moving an
Overwhelming sense of belonging
And hope . Perhaps there is a God .
This is one of my favourite carols. Personally, I'd take it a tad faster, but you can't do that in a cathedral with a long reverberation time. Aren't they just totally beautiful! Thank you, Winchester.. a lovely one to watch at Christmas.
Watching this makes me miss singing in my highschool choir, I love this sound...
This is a memorable music during the Christmas Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols. Merry Christmas.
Would this have been on Christmas eve? Was it part of a Eucharist service?

My favourite carol. Beautiful.
we sing this in my school choir =w= probably one of the very few songs we sing in chapel i like.

I absolutely loved it. Such a pretty song, and the choir did a great job. 5/5
Absolutely beautiful.
Beautiful carol, now one of my favourites.
Most highly flavored gravy...
This is part of Songs of praise (Christmas special) from Winchester cathedral 20/12/1998.
what could be more beautiful...
I am a believer, but I love the candor in your comment. Keep wondering, keep searching never stop asking, My questions may be different, but I always explore and ask.
I love this piece!
Perfection!!!
This beautiful carol causes me to think about what it must have been like when Gabriel delivered his message to Mary.
I'm singing in this choir!
Beautiful
Warmest Congratulations ! We love you, Gabriel ! Jacqueline and Pierre
MERRY 🎄 CHRISTMAS
fantastic!
@cantorisdecani
The medals have nothing to do with the RSCM in their case. Red = Head Chorister
Blue = Deputy Head Chorister and Yellow = 'Singing Boys'. There will be a few with no medal yet in Year 5
The medals are 'Winchester' medals. Very few cathedrals, if any, take part in the RSCM schemes.
John Rutter would be a legendary composer and one of the towering figures of music if he had lived 100 years ago. Today, he is no less appreciated by those who appreciate great music like this. Soul-cleansing.
sublime.
God gave us "snips and snails and puppy dog tails" - with absolutely beautiful voices!
In this version the part when they sing Gloorr-or-or-or-orrrrrrrrrrrrr - ria is how it's supposed to be sung. In some versions they seem to add an extra Orr in straight after Gloorr. If you listen to different versions you'll know what I mean. The way they sing it here has always sounded much better to me.
In general I'm an atheist but when I hear music like this I do wander... where does this beautiful music come from?
This is such a beautiful and hearfelt rendition and the children look so eager and wide-eyed that it makes me very sad to think that it was children just like these that were molested by church clergy.
Die Stimme Gottes!
@cantorisdecani
They're a professional cathedral choir, they're not RSCM affiliated. The medals themselves arent RSCM medals.
@harrietgate They will be RSCM (Royal School of Church Music) awards. Look up "RSCM Voice for Life" on Google.
It's usually Edgar Pettman's. Don't have the music though to check how his sounds exactly.
Does anyone know why some of them are wearing medals?
Machine.
No one's out here singing "most highly flavoured gravy" then?
@Portbags
beautiful
Whoa!!!
miraculous
You're all wrong.
Gold is for command officers,
Blue is for science officers,
and Red is for engineering and security.
@BrianLuvzJustin
"Heavun"
"Fayvered"
Ugh.
@Chuckwsr
johan sebastian bach said that music should only have two purposes- the exaltation of god and the restoration of the soul. My soul is restored when I listen to this song. thank you.
