5 Things That Don't Make Sense in the World

  • The Mpemba effect is a phenomenon in which it's quicker to cool water to a given temperature when the initial temperature is higher.
    It was named after Tanzanian Erasto Bartholomeo Mpemba, who, as a teenager, noticed warm ice cream mix would freeze faster than cold ice cream mix. Curious, Mpemba conducted experiments in his own house using water. He found that, like the ice cream, boiling hot water containers seemed to take less time to freeze than cold water.
    Mpemba approached Dr. Denis Osborne, a physicist from the University College in Dar es Salaam who was visiting his high school. When the teenager asked why this phenomenon happened, he was laughed at by his teachers and schoolmates.
    But Dr. Osborne agreed to help him and carried out numerous tests in his laboratory back at the university. He confirmed Mpemba's original observations, and the duo published a paper together in 1969.
    The assertion that hot liquids freeze faster than cold ones seems counter-intuitive. Yet, records of the effect go back to the writings of Aristotle, who wrote in his journals that [QUOTE]: "Water that has previously been warmed contributes to its freezing quickly."
    Scientists from various fields say they have observed the effect. For many decades it was a formally accepted scientific phenomenon. In 2012, there was a spike in interest among researchers and the public when the Royal Society of Chemistry launched a public competition, challenging participants to explain its origin and cause.
    There is no official cause for this mysterious and contradictory phenomenon. Some theorize that the evaporation of hot water reduces the mass to be frozen. Others believe that colder water forms a layer of frost at the top that reduces heat loss, increasing the freezing time.
    And some others argue it must be due to an unseen interaction between temperature and gases or solutes in the water.
    The Mpemba effect is quite controversial, and many scientists are reluctant to abandon their research on the effect just yet.

    It's fascinating that the Placebo Effect is becoming stronger with time (I've read this several times in the past few years). I think it is due to a kind of Quantum/mind-body connection that we have yet to understand. There are numerous studies showing how "laughter is the best medicine" (as in, people who watch more comedies literally recover from illness faster)..and our power to heal ourselves based upon perspective and mood can be truly profound. I think that this indicates that physical reality isn't what we think it is (as if Quantun Physics didn't already tell us that lol).

      Laughter "cures" because it promotes the body to produce hormones like dopamine, serotonin, endorphine and oxytocin; you know, your "happy hormones". Those promote healing, kind of like when a dog licks his wounds.
      And in a more basic level, anything that drives your attention away from the disease or whatever, will make you feel better just because you're no longer thinking that constantly about it. Your mood improves! Again, hormones.
      And by all means, humans are not getting more intelligent. It is quite the opposite, actually.

    I'm not a scientist, but the Mpemba effect makes sense to me.
    Thermodynamic equilibrium requires the water to transfer its heat energy to the cold environment of the freezer, an energetic system more freely gives up that energy to a low energy system than an already low energy system would.
    Liken it to a ball at the top of a steep incline, say a ramp 10 feet tall and 10 feet long.
    It has high potential energy and will quickly roll to the bottom where it will have no more potential energy than the ground it rests on.
    Now, take that same ball and put it at the top of a gentle incline 2 feet tall and 10 feet long.
    It will roll, but far, far slower to the bottom of that incline.
    That make sense to anyone else?

    • @atjays
      @atjays 3 роки тому +3

      Yeah that was my first guess as well based on some college thermodynamics classes I've had. A cursory search mostly backs this assumption up but there are many variables at play here that cause the effect to not happen in many tests. The best theory is that boiling water freezes at a slightly higher temperature than cold water does. But the reason as to why this occurs is indeed still a bit of a mystery.

    I used to figure skate in the ‘90’s & once asked the Zamboni driver why it used hot water to resurface the ice. He said (to me as a kid) that hot water has faster moving molecules so they’re further apart & so are easier to freeze. Just like a single person standing alone is more likely to freeze than a group of people huddled together. That colder water is “huddled together” & so even though it’s colder they hang on to that temp for longer & put up a bigger fight against freezing. Also that the hot water has steam which is like the water “sweating” which cools it down. I’m the analogies aren’t solid but we was talking to a kid so…

    My theory on the Mpemba effect has always been that the faster moving molecules of hot water essentially crash into each other when cold temperature is introduced. I always thought of it like a highway, if everyone is doing 80 and you introduce some cars going 25, everyone crashes down to 0 (freeze) versus a 45 mph where it's not as shocking to the system of traffic to introduce the slower cars so everyone slows to 0 more gradually. It makes sense in my head even if it doesn't make sense to anyone else.

  • @gabriellashimone6546
    @gabriellashimone6546 2 роки тому +5

    Something that was postulated to me once regarding the Impemba Effect is that the vast differences in temperature somehow cause molecules to excite more rapidly, like how water and land cool at different rates as a result of molecular density which, in turn, determines wind direction. I could be getting that wrong but it _seems_ plausible.

    I think hot liquids freeze faster because the evaporating water takes the heat out of the solution quicker. If it's cold, the molecules are moving slower, and the heat is likely dissipating at a slower rate. But if it's hot or boiling, the flow of fast-moving molecules might initiate a rapid outpouring of heat when placed in the freezer (possibly because diffusion in the cold environment pulls the flowing heat out of it quicker).

    • @oughv
      @oughv 3 роки тому +2

      Now Xi and co say hydrogen bonds also explain the Mpemba effect. Their key idea is that hydrogen bonds bring water molecules into close contact and when this happens the natural repulsion between the molecules causes the covalent O-H bonds to stretch and store energy.
      But as the liquid warms up, it forces the hydrogen bonds to stretch and the water molecules sit further apart. This allows the covalent molecules to shrink again and give up their energy. The important point is that this process in which the covalent bonds give up energy is equivalent to cooling.
      In fact, the effect is additional to the conventional process of cooling. So warm water ought to cool faster than cold water, they say. And that’s exactly what is observed in the Mpemba effect.
      These guys have calculated the magnitude of the additional cooling effect and show that it exactly accounts for the observed differences in experiments that measure the different cooling rates of hot and cold water.

    In 2010 we heard a roar in prince Williams sound in Alaska on Memorial Day weekend. We were on a Fishing charter and no one else was around. Sunny day In the early morning. 4 people and the captain on the boat. The roar grew overhead but sounded like it was coming from the West. The boat captain had no idea what it was and we expected to see a wall of water coming from that direction. We were near Smith Island. The sound grew until it shook your whole body. Yet the water was calm like glass. It seemed to fade off to the north over period of a few minutes. But no aircraft or contrails. No bases or runways nearby. We speculated but the fishing quickly redirected our attention. However, the captain had no explanation. And after 6 years of captaining the boat he had never experienced anything remotely similar.

    I feel we have free will. We can simulate situations in our minds and work out probable outcome, not certain, probable. Ok, as humans we can plan ahead in an amazing way. What if you played a scenario in your head over and over and determined - if someone tries to hurt you, you are prepared ( Meaning you already made the decision) of how you'll react if that situation ever does in fact happen. Heat rises, cold settles low. So if you put hot water in a freezer, the heat escapes from the top very quickly, and the coldness of the freezer can freeze the bottom part of the water first, allowing all the heat to escape from the top. With extremely limited knowledge I came up with a theory about why hot water freezes quicker than cold.
    So in hot solids liquids and gasses, I learnt in science that the particles are moving faster than cold solids liquids and gasses. So the particles in the hot water make contact with the edge of the water more frequently than the particles in the cold water. The hot particles then freeze faster because they make more contact with the cold surface of the water than the slower ones.
    That probably made no sense so please correct me.

    • @reaperzeero
      @reaperzeero 2 роки тому

      Well...When you say cold particles, what you are saying in physics terms is "particles that have little movement" If they get impacted by fast-moving ones the fast ones slow down a bit and the cold ones accelerate a bit until they reach an equilibrium. The water then transfers some of its heat into the air in the freezer until it reaches and equilibrium with the air in the freezer and the freezer changes the warm air out of the freezer for colder air....and the process repeats. So it should not be true that hot water cools faster than room temperature water.

I guess I looked at it like if you're warm and go into the cold winter outside, it felt like you'd feel it much worse. Or if you get out from under an electric blanket at night to go pee, you tend to be colder faster than if you fell asleep on the couch with no blanket and got up to do the same. That observation about the fog is likely because the sun travels East/West, so you're looking toward the sun or with the sun over your shoulder/back. More light shining where you're looking to pierce the fog.

    It only stands to reason that you are conscious of a thought after it is formed. Before it is formed, it doesn't exist. There is nothing to be conscious of. It doesn't mean you didn't form the thought, and doesn't mean you don't have free will.
    You don't have free will, but thats for a different reason ;)

    The Libet experiment sounds flawed. Of course there's a delay. It takes time for a signal to travel from the brain to the muscle. Besides, if you're told to flex when you feel like it, you're going to feel interal pressure to do so. What would a subject do, sit there and do nothing?

      That delay is so small it's insignificant. And internal pressure doesn't seem relevant if it's either external or internal.

    Regarding the "Mpemba Effect", I was told many years ago that hot water freezes faster than cold water by a college chemistry professor. He believes this is so, because hot liquids are full of loose gases that allow the more rapid transmission of refrigerants into the core of the water mass. Hot water is also thermoreactive, which means that liquid at higher temperatures are more dynamic than cold liquids, so the introduction of refrigerants to the warmer, thermodynamic liquid mass makes the volume of liquid more thoroughly and uniformly exposed to cooling or freezing temperatures. This may or may not be related to how hot liquid cools faster when you blow on them with your mouth.

  • @phillipkirby502
    @phillipkirby502 3 роки тому +1

    I always thought it was because warm or hot water molecules are further apart creating less friction and allowing heat to escape faster. Where as cold water molecules are more tightly packed together rubbing against one another, causing friction and taking longer to freeze because of the small amount of friction heat.

      Water is weird. I always thought the Mpemba affect happened because the hot water warmed the freezer causing it to run faster thus freezing the water faster, lol! Actually I have tried this experiment when I was younger. It worked.
